  • Perceptions of the appropriate response to norm violation in 57 societies
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Nature Communications. - : Nature Research. - 2041-1723. ; 12:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Norm enforcement may be important for resolving conflicts and promoting cooperation. However, little is known about how preferred responses to norm violations vary across cultures and across domains. In a preregistered study of 57 countries (using convenience samples of 22,863 students and non-students), we measured perceptions of the appropriateness of various responses to a violation of a cooperative norm and to atypical social behaviors. Our findings highlight both cultural universals and cultural variation. We find a universal negative relation between appropriateness ratings of norm violations and appropriateness ratings of responses in the form of confrontation, social ostracism and gossip. Moreover, we find the country variation in the appropriateness of sanctions to be consistent across different norm violations but not across different sanctions. Specifically, in those countries where use of physical confrontation and social ostracism is rated as less appropriate, gossip is rated as more appropriate. Little is known about peoples preferred responses to norm violations across countries. Here, in a study of 57 countries, the authors highlight cultural similarities and differences in peoples perception of the appropriateness of norm violations.

  • Microbial Necromass, Lignin, and Glycoproteins for Determining and Optimizing Blue Carbon Formation
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Environmental Science and Technology. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 0013-936X .- 1520-5851. ; 58, s. 468-479
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Coastal wetlands contribute to the mitigation of climate change through the sequestration of “blue carbon”. Microbial necromass, lignin, and glycoproteins (i.e., glomalin-related soil proteins (GRSP)), as important components of soil organic carbon (SOC), are sensitive to environmental change. However, their contributions to blue carbon formation and the underlying factors remain largely unresolved. To address this paucity of knowledge, we investigated their contributions to blue carbon formation along a salinity gradient in coastal marshes. Our results revealed decreasing contributions of microbial necromass and lignin to blue carbon as the salinity increased, while GRSP showed an opposite trend. Using random forest models, we showed that their contributions to SOC were dependent on microbial biomass and resource stoichiometry. In N-limited saline soils, contributions of microbial necromass to SOC decreased due to increased N-acquisition enzyme activity. Decreases in lignin contributions were linked to reduced mineral protection offered by short-range-ordered Fe (FeSRO). Partial least-squares path modeling (PLS-PM) further indicated that GRSP could increase microbial necromass and lignin formation by enhancing mineral protection. Our findings have implications for improving the accumulation of refractory and mineral-bound organic matter in coastal wetlands, considering the current scenario of heightened nutrient discharge and sea-level rise.

  • Social mindfulness and prosociality vary across the globe
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America. - : Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. - 0027-8424 .- 1091-6490. ; 118:35
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Humans are social animals, but not everyone will be mindful of others to the same extent. Individual differences have been found, but would social mindfulness also be shaped by one's location in the world? Expecting cross-national differences to exist, we examined if and how social mindfulness differs across countries. At little to no material cost, social mindfulness typically entails small acts of attention or kindness. Even though fairly common, such low-cost cooperation has received little empirical attention. Measuring social mindfulness across 31 samples from industrialized countries and regions (n = 8,354), we found considerable variation. Among selected country-level variables, greater social mindfulness was most strongly associated with countries' better general performance on environmental protection. Together, our findings contribute to the literature on prosociality by targeting the kind of everyday cooperation that is more focused on communicating benevolence than on providing material benefits.

  • Active Vitamin D Use and Fractures in Hemodialysis Patients : Results from the International DOPPS
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Journal of Bone and Mineral Research. - 0884-0431. ; 38:11, s. 1577-1585
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Active vitamin D is commonly used to control secondary hyperparathyroidism in dialysis patients, but it is unknown whether active vitamin D directly improves bone strength, independently of its ability to suppress parathyroid hormone (PTH). We analyzed the association between the prescription of active vitamin D and incidence of any fracture and hip fracture in 41,677 in-center hemodialysis patients from 21 countries in phases 3 to 6 (2005 to 2018) of the Dialysis Outcomes and Practice Patterns Study (DOPPS). We used Cox regression, adjusted for PTH and other potential confounders, and used a per-protocol approach to censor patients at treatment switch during follow-up. We also used a facility preference approach to minimize confounding by indication. Overall, 55% of patients were prescribed active vitamin D at study enrollment. Event rates (per patient-year) were 0.024 for any fracture and 0.010 for hip fracture. The adjusted hazard ratio (95% confidence interval) comparing patients prescribed versus not prescribed active vitamin D was 1.02 (0.90 to 1.17) for any fracture and 1.00 (0.81 to 1.23) for hip fracture. In the facility preference approach, there was no difference in fracture rate between facilities with higher versus lower active vitamin D prescriptions. Thus, our results do not suggest a PTH-independent benefit of active vitamin D in fracture prevention and support the current KDIGO guideline suggesting the use of active vitamin D only in subjects with elevated or rising PTH. Further research is needed to determine the role of active vitamin D beyond PTH control.

  • The influence of the preparation procedure on the storage ande regeneration behavior of Pt and Ba based NOx storage and reduction catalysts
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Applied Catalysis B: Environmental. - 0926-3373 .- 1873-3883. ; 88, s. 240-248
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The influence of the preparation procedure on the performance of NOx storage and reduction catalysts was investigated by means of flow reactor experiments. Three catalysts were examined; one Pt/Al and two Pt/Ba/Al samples. One of the Pt/Ba/Al samples was prepared with Pt impregnated on Al/Ba and one with Ba impregnated on Al/Pt. The results clearly show that the preparation procedure influences the behavior of NOx storage and reduction catalysts both during lean and rich conditions. The order of the impregnation steps is crucial especially at higher temperatures; a higher storage capacity is obtained when impregnating Al/Pt with Ba than when impregnating Al/Ba with Pt. The storage increased with as much as 54% when adding Ba in the last step. The N2O and NH3 formation is also affected by the preparation procedure; there is a clear dependency on the order of impregnation steps. Moreover, N2O is not only formed during rich conditions but also in the beginning of the lean period over the Pt/Al and Al/Pt/Ba samples.

  • Optimal road grade design based on stochastic speed trajectories for minimising transportation energy consumption
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: IET Intelligent Transport Systems. - : John Wiley & Sons. - 1751-956X .- 1751-9578. ; 15:11, s. 1414-1428
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Reducing energy consumption, regardless of fuel or electricity, of ground vehicles is a paramount pursuit in academia and industry. Current research concentrates exclusively on the improvement of the vehicle, but accepts the road conditions as external influences. The innovation of this article is to consider the road conditions, particularly the grade angle, as design variables. It is assumed that the stochastic speed trajectories of all vehicles on the road can be modelled by a Markov chain. The expected value of the average energy consumptions of all vehicles running on the road is defined as the objective function. The optimisation problem is solved by dynamic programming with Markov model. Evaluations have been made on both simulated and measured speed trajectories. For the simulated speed trajectories, the optimal road grade profile designed by the method saves up to 22% energy compared with a flat road. For the measured speed trajectories, the optimal road grade profile saves up to 2.7% transportation energy compared with the actual road profile. Application of this method on building road could lead to considerable energy saving.

  • The Optimal Road Grade Design for Minimizing Ground Vehicle Energy Consumption
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Energies. - : MDPI AG. - 1996-1073. ; 10:5
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Reducing energy consumption of ground vehicles is a paramount pursuit in academia and industry. Even though the road infrastructural has a significant influence on vehicular fuel consumption, the majority of the R&D efforts are dedicated to improving vehicles. Little investigation has been made in the optimal design of the road infrastructure to minimize the total fuel consumption of all vehicles running on it. This paper focuses on this overlooked design problem and the design parameters of the optimal road infrastructure is the profile of road grade angle between two fixed points. We assume that all vehicles on the road follow a given acceleration profile between the two given points. The mean value of the energy consumptions of all vehicles running on the road is defined as the objective function. The optimization problem is solved both analytically by Pontryagin's minimum principle and numerically by dynamic programming. The two solutions agree well. A large number of Monte Carlo simulations show that the vehicles driving on the road with the optimal road grade consume up to 31.7% less energy than on a flat road. Finally, a rough cost analysis justifies the economic advantage of building the optimal road profile.

  • The Effect of NO2/NOx Feed Ratio on the NH3-SCR System Over Cu–Zeolites with Varying Copper Loading
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Catalysis Letters. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1572-879X .- 1011-372X. ; 144:1, s. 70-80
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this study we examine the NO/NO2–NH3-SCR system over Cu–BEA with varying Cu loading. Significantly higher selective catalytic reduction (SCR) activity is observed at low temperature on highly loaded copper samples, whereas the reverse trend is noticed at high temperature. The N2O formation is substantially increased over “over-exchanged” Cu sites, where Cu co-ordinate to one Al and charge-balanced with one OH-group. This is also the case for NO2 reaction with NH3 to produce NO. Using transient experiments the formation/decomposition of ammonium nitrate species are examined. The decomposition depends on the temperature, the sequence of the feed as well as the type of copper species present.
