  • Towards 6G wireless communication networks: vision, enabling technologies, and new paradigm shifts
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Science China Information Sciences. - : Science Press. - 1674-733X .- 1869-1919. ; 64:1
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The fifth generation (5G) wireless communication networks are being deployed worldwide from 2020 and more capabilities are in the process of being standardized, such as mass connectivity, ultra-reliability, and guaranteed low latency. However, 5G will not meet all requirements of the future in 2030 and beyond, and sixth generation (6G) wireless communication networks are expected to provide global coverage, enhanced spectral/energy/cost efficiency, better intelligence level and security, etc. To meet these requirements, 6G networks will rely on new enabling technologies, i.e., air interface and transmission technologies and novel network architecture, such as waveform design, multiple access, channel coding schemes, multi-antenna technologies, network slicing, cell-free architecture, and cloud/fog/edge computing. Our vision on 6G is that it will have four new paradigm shifts. First, to satisfy the requirement of global coverage, 6G will not be limited to terrestrial communication networks, which will need to be complemented with non-terrestrial networks such as satellite and unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) communication networks, thus achieving a space-air-ground-sea integrated communication network. Second, all spectra will be fully explored to further increase data rates and connection density, including the sub-6 GHz, millimeter wave (mmWave), terahertz (THz), and optical frequency bands. Third, facing the big datasets generated by the use of extremely heterogeneous networks, diverse communication scenarios, large numbers of antennas, wide bandwidths, and new service requirements, 6G networks will enable a new range of smart applications with the aid of artificial intelligence (AI) and big data technologies. Fourth, network security will have to be strengthened when developing 6G networks. This article provides a comprehensive survey of recent advances and future trends in these four aspects. Clearly, 6G with additional technical requirements beyond those of 5G will enable faster and further communications to the extent that the boundary between physical and cyber worlds disappears.

  • Packet combining based on cross-packet coding
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Science China Information Sciences. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1674-733X .- 1869-1919. ; 56:2, s. 022302-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We propose a packet combining scheme of using cross-packet coding. With the coding scheme, one redundant packet can be used to ensure the error-correction of multiple source packets. Thus, the proposed scheme can increase the code rate. Moreover, the proposed coding scheme has also advantages of decoding complexity, reducing undetectable errors (by the proposed low-complexity decoder) and flexibility (applicable to channels with and without feedback). Theoretical analysis under the proposed low-complexity decoding algorithm is given to maximize the code rate by optimizing the number of source packets. Finally, we give numerical results to demonstrate the advantages of the proposed scheme in terms of code rates compared to the traditional packet combining without coding or ARQ (automatic repeat-request) techniques.

  • A Novel Maximum Distance Separable Code Based RIS-OFDM : Design and Optimization
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: 2022 IEEE GLOBAL COMMUNICATIONS CONFERENCE (GLOBECOM 2022). - : Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). ; , s. 1521-1526
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper, we propose a novel maximum distance separable (MDS) code based and reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) assisted wireless communication system with orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM). Specifically, input bits are firstly divided into groups and their MDS codes are utilized to decide the amplitudes and phases of subcarriers. The introduction of the MDS code helps to increase the minimum Hamming distance between symbols and improve on the capability of error detection. Besides, the RIS is adopted to create additional paths between the radio frequency (RF) and the receiver as well as alter the signal phases with derived optimal solution. Benefiting from the strength of the RIS, the proposed system can better overcome multipath fading compared with conventional systems. Simulation results are presented to demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed system in terms of reducing bit error rate (BER) through multipath channels.

  • Secrecy Performance Analysis in Downlink NOMA Systems with Cooperative Full-duplex Relaying
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: 2018 IEEE INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON COMMUNICATIONS WORKSHOPS (ICC WORKSHOPS). - : IEEE. - 9781538643280
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We introduce the cooperative full-duplex relaying to a downlink non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) system and analyze the secrecy performance of each NOMA user. In particular, we enable the near NOMA user, which is close to a base station (BS), to act as a full-duplex relay for the far NOMA user, which is far away from the BS. By taking imperfect self-interference cancellation into consideration, we analytically derive the secrecy outage probabilities of both NOMA users with integral expressions. To reduce the computational complexity of both secrecy outage probabilities, we adopt approximation techniques and obtain approximated secrecy outage probabilities with closed-form expressions. Simulation results validate the correctness of our analysis and reveal that suppressing the self-interference at the full-duplex relay can enhance the secrecy performance of NOMA users. Meanwhile, simulation results demonstrate the advantages of the cooperative full-duplex relaying in the NOMA system over the OMA system.

  • Intelligent Beam Training with Deep Convolutional Neural Network in mmWave Communications
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: 2022 IEEE GLOBAL COMMUNICATIONS CONFERENCE (GLOBECOM 2022). - : Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). ; , s. 1223-1228
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Highly directional beams in millimeter wave (mmWave) communications necessitate beam training or alignment between the access point (AP) and the user equipment (UE), and exhausted beam search (EBS) method is suggested in the current 3GPP standard. Nevertheless, EBS suffers from high overheads and inevitably lowers the throughput, especially when the beam space is large. In this paper, we utilize the spatial correlation among different beams as well as the strong feature extraction/representation capability of the deep convolutional neural network (CNN), and propose an intelligent beam training algorithm. With the proposed method, the AP can probe only a fixed subset of the whole beam space and identify the optimal beam intelligently. Simulation results show that, the proposed method can largely reduce the overheads for the beam training meanwhile boost the throughput performance compared with the state of the arts.

  • Adaptive Spatial Modulation MIMO Based on Machine Learning
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: IEEE Journal on Selected Areas in Communications. - : IEEE-INST ELECTRICAL ELECTRONICS ENGINEERS INC. - 0733-8716 .- 1558-0008. ; 37:9, s. 2117-2131
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper, we propose a novel framework of low-cost link adaptation for spatial modulation multiple-input multiple-output (SM-MIMO) systems-based upon the machine learning paradigm. Specifically, we first convert the problems of transmit antenna selection (TAS) and power allocation (PA) in SM-MIMO to ones-based upon data-driven prediction rather than conventional optimization-driven decisions. Then, supervised-learning classifiers (SLC), such as the K-nearest neighbors (KNN) and support vector machine (SVM) algorithms, are developed to obtain their statistically-consistent solutions. Moreover, for further comparison we integrate deep neural networks (DNN) with these adaptive SM-MIMO schemes, and propose a novel DNN-based multi-label classifier for TAS and PA parameter evaluation. Furthermore, we investigate the design of feature vectors for the SLC and DNN approaches and propose a novel feature vector generator to match the specific transmission mode of SM. As a further advance, our proposed approaches are extended to other adaptive index modulation (IM) schemes, e.g., adaptive modulation (AM) aided orthogonal frequency division multiplexing with IM (OFDM-IM). Our simulation results show that the SLC and DNN-based adaptive SM-MIMO systems outperform many conventional optimization-driven designs and are capable of achieving a near-optimal performance with a significantly lower complexity.

  • Enhanced Receive Spatial Modulation Based on Power Allocation
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: IEEE Journal on Selected Topics in Signal Processing. - : Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). - 1932-4553 .- 1941-0484. ; 13:6, s. 1312-1325
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper, we investigate the benefits of power allocation (PA) for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) receive spatial modulation (RSM) with both a total transmit power constraint (TTPC) and a per-antenna power constraint (PAPC). First, we derive optimal PA closed-form solutions that maximize the minimum distance d(min) between the received signal points for (N-t x 2)-element RSM with arbitrary phase-shift keying schemes (where N-t is the number of transmit antennas) subject to a TTPC. Based on the derived solutions and the error vector reduction (EVR) method, we propose a low-complexity iterative algorithm to identify PA parameters for high numbers of receive antennas (N-r >= 2). Specifically, the EVR-based PA (EVR-PA) algorithm resembles its traditional exhaustive-search-based counterpart, but only exploits the receive distances of a few dominant error vectors to iteratively optimize the PA matrix. Then, a more strict yet practical PAPC is considered for PA in RSM-MIMO systems, and a well-designed approximate convex optimization (ACO)-based iterative PA algorithm is proposed. Compared to EVR-PA, the ACO-based PA (ACO-PA) algorithm first formulates the PA problems with the PAPC in RSM into constrained quadratic program problems and then utilizes the powerful augmented Lagrangian multiplier to find their optimal solutions. Our simulation results show that the proposed EVR-PA- and ACO-PA-aided RSM schemes outperform the equal-power-allocated RSM- and PA-aided spatial multiplexing schemes.

  • A Novel Hybrid Code-Domain Index Modulation Scheme
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: IEEE Communications Letters. - : Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). - 1089-7798 .- 1558-2558. ; 25:10, s. 3403-3407
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this letter, a novel hybrid code-domain index modulation (CDIM) scheme is proposed for future multi-domain communications, where the indices of the interleaving and spreading codes are exploited for information transmission. Specifically, we first provide a general design framework for CDIM, including the bit-to-symbol mapping rule and the detector. Then, we propose a code optimization method to select the utilized interleaver sequence and spreading code, with the objective of significantly improving the bit error ratio (BER) performance. Moreover, an intelligent detector is also proposed for CDIM in complicated wireless communication scenarios, e.g., non-Gaussian wireless channels. Simulation results show that the proposed CDIM is capable of substantially improving the system error performance compared with the conventional coded wireless communication systems.

  • Ingår i: IEEE wireless communications. - : IEEE-INST ELECTRICAL ELECTRONICS ENGINEERS INC. - 1536-1284 .- 1558-0687. ; 24:5, s. 44-51
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Spectrum efficiency is one of the key performance metrics in 5G communication networks. To enhance spectrum efficiency, advanced spectrum sharing techniques are normally used. In this article, we provide a survey of the recent development of advanced techniques for spectrum sharing. In particular, we elaborate cognitive radio, device-to-device communication, in-band full-duplex communication, non-orthogonal multiple access, and Long Term Evolution on unlicensed spectrum. For each technique, we present the basic principle and research methodology of the state of the art. By considering various promising evolutions in 5G networks, we emphasize challenges to deploy each technique. Finally, we discuss the integration issue of multiple spectrum sharing techniques and identify potential challenges.

  • Decentralized Caching Schemes and Performance Limits in Two-Layer Networks
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: IEEE Transactions on Vehicular Technology. - : IEEE-INST ELECTRICAL ELECTRONICS ENGINEERS INC. - 0018-9545 .- 1939-9359. ; 67:12, s. 12177-12192
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We study the decentralized caching scheme in a two-layer network, which includes a server, multiple helpers, and multiple users. Basically, the proposed caching scheme consists of two phases, i.e., placement phase and delivery phase. In the placement phase, each helper/user randomly and independently selects contents from the server and stores them into its memory. In the delivery phase, the users request contents from the server, and the server satisfies each user through a helper. Different from the existing caching scheme, the proposed caching scheme takes into account the pre- stored contents at both helpers and users in the placement phase to design the delivery phase. Meanwhile, the proposed caching scheme exploits index coding in the delivery phase and leverages multicast opportunities, even when different users request distinct contents. Besides, we analytically characterize the performance limit of the proposed caching scheme, and show that the achievable rate region of the proposed caching scheme lies within constant margins to the information-theoretic optimum. In particular, the multiplicative and additive factors are carefully sharpened to be 1/48 and 4, respectively, both of which are better than the state of arts. Finally, simulation results demonstrate the advantage of the proposed caching scheme compared with the state of arts.
