  • Over 20 years of observations in the boreal forest reveal a decreasing trend of atmospheric new particle formation
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Boreal Environment Research. - 1239-6095. ; 29:1-6, s. 35-52
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • New particle formation (NPF) events substantially contribute to the number concentration of atmospheric particles and cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) which can further influence radiative balance and Earth's climate. Many short-term studies have found that sulfuric acid (H2 SO4) and highly oxygenated organic molecules (HOM) are critical compounds in the early steps of NPF. However, it is not fully understood how NPF intensity and frequency respond to global warming and declining anthropogenic sulfur dioxide (SO2) emissions, affecting HOM and H2 SO4 formation, respectively. Here, we report the results of long-term (over 20 years) datasets collected at the Station for Measuring Ecosystem-Atmosphere Relations (SMEAR) II (Hyytiälä, Finland). Owing to the significant contribution of HOM in the initial and subsequent particle formation and growth, we have derived a HOM proxy for conducting the long-term trend analysis. Measurement results together with modelled proxies reveal the declining trends of SO2, H2 SO4, Condensation Sink (CS), NPF frequency and particle formation rate (J3) along with increasing trends of monoterpenes and HOM.

  • Fusobacterium nucleatum- induced exosomal HOTTIP promotes gastric cancer progression through the microRNA-885-3p/EphB2 axis
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Cancer Science. - : John Wiley & Sons. - 1347-9032 .- 1349-7006. ; 114:6, s. 2360-2374
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Recent studies have reported that Fusobacterium nucleatum (Fn) is associated with gastric cancer (GC). Cancer-derived exosomes contain key regulatory noncoding RNAs and are a crucial medium of intercellular communication. However, the function and regulatory mechanism of exosomes (Fn-GCEx) secreted from Fn-infected GC cells remains unclear. In this study, Fn-GCEx enhanced the proliferation, migration, and invasion capacity of GC cells in vitro, as well as tumor growth and metastasis in vivo. HOTTIP was also upregulated in GC cells treated with Fn-GCEx. Moreover, knockdown of HOTTIP weakened the effects of Fn-GCEx in recipient GC cells. Mechanistically, HOTTIP promoted EphB2 expression by sponging microRNA (miR)-885-3p, thus activating the PI3K/AKT pathway in Fn-GCEx treated GC cells. Overall, Fn infection induced the upregulation of exosomal HOTTIP from GC cells that subsequently promoted GC progression through the miR-885-3p/EphB2/PI3K/AKT axis. Herein, we identify a potential molecular pathway and therapeutic target for GC.

  • Preparation of Porous NiAl Intermetallic with Controllable Shape and Pore Structure by Rapid Thermal Explosion with Space Holder
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Metals and Materials International. - : Springer. - 1598-9623 .- 2005-4149. ; 27:10, s. 4216-4224
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Due to the high exothermic characteristic of NiAl during the reaction synthesis process from Ni–Al elemental powders, the NiAl intermetallic melts frequently, and the specimens are difficult to maintain their original shape, which leads to the inhomogeneity of the pore size and morphology. To tackle this problem, porous NiAl intermetallic monolith with controllable shape and pore structure was prepared through thermal explosion (TE) using NaCl as space holder. The TE behavior was recorded, and the effect of the volume fraction of NaCl on the phase composition, macroscopic feature, pore morphology and open porosity were investigated. The results showed that NiAl was the main phase in the products, and the specimen was free from cracking or deforming when NaCl content reached 30 vol%. The interconnected channel and pore windows were formed, and the open porosity was improved greatly to 63% by adding 50 vol% NaCl. The leachable space holder route provides a simple way to control the shape, pore structure and open porosity of the synthesized porous NiAl intermetallic.

  • Decoding Fear : Exploring User Experiences in Virtual Reality Horror Games
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 11th International Symposium of Chinese CHI: Generative, Reflective, Envisioning, Chinese CHI 2023. - : Association for Computing Machinery (ACM). ; , s. 411-419
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This preliminary study investigated user experiences in VR horror games, highlighting fear-triggering and gender-based differences in perception. By utilizing a scientifically validated and specially designed questionnaire, we successfully collected questionnaire data from 23 subjects for an early empirical study of fear induction in a virtual reality gaming environment. The early findings suggest that visual restrictions and ambient sound-enhanced realism may be more effective in intensifying the fear experience. Participants exhibited a tendency to avoid playing alone or during nighttime, underscoring the significant psychological impact of VR horror games. The study also revealed a distinct gender difference in fear perception, with female participants exhibiting a higher sensitivity to fear stimuli. However, the preference for different types of horror games was not solely dominated by males; it varied depending on factors such as the game's pace, its objectives, and the nature of the fear stimulant.

  • VRMN-bD: A Multi-modal Natural Behavior Dataset of Immersive Human Fear Responses in VR Stand-up Interactive Games
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Proceedings - 2024 IEEE Conference on Virtual Reality and 3D User Interfaces, VR 2024. - : Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). ; , s. 320-330
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Understanding and recognizing emotions are important and challenging issues in the metaverse era. Understanding, identifying, and predicting fear, which is one of the fundamental human emotions, in virtual reality (VR) environments plays an essential role in immersive game development, scene development, and next-generation virtual human-computer interaction applications. In this article, we used VR horror games as a medium to analyze fear emotions by collecting multi-modal data (posture, audio, and physiological signals) from 23 players. We used an LSTM-based model to predict fear with accuracies of 65.31% and 90.47% under 6-level classification (no fear and five different levels of fear) and 2-level classification (no fear and fear), respectively. We constructed a multi-modal natural behavior dataset of immersive human fear responses (VRMN-bD) and compared it with existing relevant advanced datasets. The results show that our dataset has fewer limitations in terms of collection method, data scale and audience scope. We are unique and advanced in targeting multi-modal datasets of fear and behavior in VR stand-up interactive environments. Moreover, we discussed the implications of this work for communities and applications. The dataset and pre-trained model are available at https://github.com/KindOPSTAR/VRMN-bD.
