  • Enhanced low band MIMO terminal antenna based on selective feeding of chassis modes
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: 14th European Conference on Antennas and Propagation (EuCAP).
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Multiple-input multiple-out (MIMO) is a mature technology in modern wireless communications. However, it is challenging to implement multi-antennas for MIMO operation in compact mobile terminals, due to high mutual coupling and correlation among closely spaced antenna elements. Moreover, a conventional terminal chassis only offers one resonant mode below 1 GHz, complicating multi-antenna design. Recently, it has been shown that the chassis can be modified to facilitate a few resonant modes below 1 GHz. However, attempts to excite these modes selectively using a single coupling feed per antenna port result in limited bandwidth and isolation. In this work, we propose dual-feed antenna ports to improve selective feeding of the resonant modes of an existing two-port MIMO terminal antenna below 1 GHz. Simulation results reveal significantly enhanced bandwidths of 30% and 15% for the two ports, as well as high isolation of over 32 dB.

  • Analysis of Partially Reflective Surface Antenna with Different Reflection Magnitudes Using Ray-tracing
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: 2022 IEEE International Symposium on Antennas and Propagation and USNC-URSI Radio Science Meeting, AP-S/URSI 2022 - Proceedings. - 9781665496582 ; , s. 1602-1603
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • It has been shown that a partially reflective surface (PRS) antenna with a larger reflection magnitude has a higher antenna gain, based on practical design examples. In this paper, PRS antennas with different reflection magnitudes are analyzed using an intuitive ray-tracing model. It is derived that the larger reflection magnitude enables a smaller phase delay and a more uniform magnitude distribution across the PRS, which leads to a superior gain. The antennas with different reflection magnitudes were simulated in a full-wave solver to verify the derivation. The simulated phase and magnitude distributions of the PRS antennas agree with the predicted trends from ray-tracing.

  • Beam manipulation using characteristic mode analysis for switchable beam patch antenna
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: 2020 IEEE International Symposium on Antennas and Propagation and North American Radio Science Meeting. - 9781728166704
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The operating mechanisms of a planar patch antenna with a parasitic strip is analyzed in this paper. The patch antenna uses a thin parasitic strip to realize beam deflection, which facilitates switchable beam. The beam deflection effect of the parasitic strip can be explained by using characteristic mode analysis (CMA). Specifically, the parasitic strip introduces a new mode that interacts with a fundamental broadside mode to generate the beam deflection. This insight provides a practical way to manipulate the resulting beam. As an example, it is used to increase the deflection angle by enhancing the new mode.

  • Beam reconfigurable reflective metasurface for indoor wireless communications
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: 2021 IEEE International Symposium on Antennas and Propagation and North American Radio Science Meeting : APS/URSI 2021 - Proceedings - APS/URSI 2021 - Proceedings. - 9781728146706 ; , s. 1603-1604
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A reflective metasurface with reconfigurable beam is proposed for indoor wireless communications. It consists of 8 × 8 unit cells with tunable capacitors. By varying the capacitances, the reflective phase across the metasurface can be designed to facilitate different reflective angles for an incident wave. The simulation results show that the proposed reflective metasurface can deflect the incoming wave from the broadside by up to 47 degrees, with the maximum side lobe level of -11dB. The proposed design is envisioned for mitigating the problem of blind spots in indoor wireless communications.

  • Co-designed millimeter-wave and sub-6GHz antenna for 5G smartphones
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: IEEE Antennas and Wireless Propagation Letters. - 1548-5757. ; 21:10, s. 1995-1999
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This letter proposes a co-designed millimeter-wave (mm-wave) and sub-6GHz antenna system. The antenna system consists of four 28GHz mm-wave arrays with reconfigurable radiation patterns and two sub-6GHz antennas fed with two corner capacitive coupling elements (CCEs). Each corner CCE is formed by the connected ground planes of two mm-wave arrays in the shared-aperture configuration. The two CCEs are separately matched to cover two sub-6GHz bands. Each mm-wave array consists of an active patch element and two parasitic patch elements loaded with PIN diodes, realizing 90-degree beam scanning range with two states of the PIN diodes. The measured results of the fabricated prototype show good agreement with the simulated ones. The prototyped mm-wave arrays cover the band 27.5-28.35GHz, and each achieves 90-degree beam scanning at 28GHz, with measured peak realized gain of 7.9 dBi. The CCE ports cover the two sub-6GHz bands of 0.79-0.96 GHz and 1.7-5GHz, with measured isolation of above 17dB and 20dB, respectively. The mm-wave band isolation is above 26dB.
