  • The Interaction Between Language and Culture: A Test of the Cultural Accommodation Hypothesis in Seven Countries
  • 2002
  • In: Language and Intercultural Communication. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1470-8477 .- 1747-759X. ; 2:2, s. 120-139
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • We investigate the cultural accommodation hypothesis in questionnaire-based research: Do respondents adjust their responses in a way that reflects the cultural values associated with the language of the questionnaire? A test of this hypothesis with a sample of university students in seven countries indicates that cultural accommodation plays an important role in cross-language research.

  • Staff management practices within multinational companies
  • 2000
  • Doctoral thesis (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • The present dissertation attempts to shed light on the agents that moderate the transference and implementation of staff management practices across subsidiaries within multinational Companies. The dissertation thesis consists of three empirical studies on employees working across 10 different countries at the subsidiaries of two multinational companies. The empirical studies deal with the relationship between staff management practices and domestic normative sources such as culture and institutions. The studies consist of interviews and surveys, examining staff management practices and expectations toward managers and staff. Staff practices are approached in a dual sense, labelled tactical and strategic management practices. Tactical management practices are understood as any short-range routines exercised by managers when interacting with subordinates, and strategic management practices are understood as wide-range routines systematically exercised by management as summarised in policies and programs. The three studies offer substantial evidence that the institutional arrangements of countries are a robust explanatory variable of the transfer and implementation of strategic management practices in multinational companies. Besides, the results indicate that both cultural and institutional forces moderate the exercise of tactical management practices. One of the cardinal implications of this dissertation is the recognition of the intertwined effect of institutional and cultural normative sources on variances and commonalties in staff management practices within multinational companies across subsidiaries.

  • Cross-Cultural Role Expectations in Nine European Country-Units of A Multinational Enterprise
  • 2001
  • In: Journal of management studies. - : Blackwell Publishers Ltd. - 1467-6486 .- 0022-2380. ; 38:8, s. 1187-1215
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The study analyses role expectations of 104 staff from nine European country-units within a multinational enterprise (MNE). Questions were administered to a sample of staff to elicit data on managers’ and employees’ expectations about managerial and employee roles. Following a categorization of reports and statistical analyses within and between country-units (i.e. subsidiaries and headquarters offices), results offer substantial evidence of differential patterns of role expectations across country-units, suggesting influences of local cultures and other societal forces. Significant differences were also found between managers and employees independent of country-office for expectations about the managerial and employee roles. Implications for research and practice are presented and future research directions are suggested.
