  • The Plasma Wave Investigation (PWI) onboard the BepiColombo/MMO : First measurement of electric fields, electromagnetic waves, and radio waves around Mercury
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Planetary and Space Science. - : Elsevier BV. - 0032-0633 .- 1873-5088. ; 58:1-2, s. 238-278
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The BepiColombo Mercury Magnetospheric Orbiter (MMO) spacecraft includes the plasma and radio wave observation system called Plasma Wave Investigation (PWI). Since the receivers for electric field, plasma waves, and radio waves are not installed in any of the preceding spacecraft to Mercury, the PWI will provide the first opportunity for conducting in-situ and remote-sensing observations of electric fields, plasma waves, and radio waves in the Hermean magnetosphere and exosphere. These observations are valuable in studying structure, dynamics, and energy exchange processes in the unique magnetosphere of Mercury. They are characterized by the key words of the non-MHD environment and the peculiar interaction between the relatively large planet without ionosphere and the solar wind with high dynamic pressure. The PWI consists of three sets of receivers (EWO, SORBET, and AM(2)P), connected to two sets of electric field sensors (MEFISTO and WPT) and two kinds of magnetic field sensors (LF-SC and DB-SC). The PWI will observe both waveforms and frequency spectra in the frequency range from DC to 10 MHz for the electric field and from 0.3 Hz to 640kHz for the magnetic field. From 2008, we will start the development of the engineering model, which is conceptually consistent with the flight model design. The present paper discusses the significance and objectives of plasma/radio wave observations in the Hermean magnetosphere, and describes the PWI sensors, receivers and their performance as well as the onboard data processing.

  • Correlation between global lightning and whistlers observed at Tihany, Hungary
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Journal of Geophysical Research. - 0148-0227 .- 2156-2202. ; 114, s. A07210-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Although the generation and propagation mechanisms for whistlers are fairly well understood, the location and extent of the lightning source region for the whistlers observed at a given station are currently unknown. The correlation of whistler observations against global lightning data allows an estimate of the size and position of the source region. For whistlers detected at Tihany, Hungary, an area of positive correlation with radius of similar to 1000 km was found to be centered on the conjugate point. Although the maximal sample correlation coefficient was relatively low, r = 0.065, it has a high statistical significance, indicating that it is extremely improbable that the whistlers and lightning in this region are actually uncorrelated. Other smaller areas of positive correlation were found further afield in South America and the Maritime Continent. Lightning in the northern hemisphere displayed a negative correlation with whistlers at Tihany.

  • Spatial correlation between lightning strikes and whistler observations from Tihany, Hungary
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: South African Journal of Science. - : Academy of Science of South Africa. - 0038-2353 .- 1996-7489. ; 105:5-6, s. 234-237
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A whistler is a very low frequency (VLF) phenomenon that acquires its characteristics from dispersive propagation in the magnetosphere. Whistlers are derived from the intense VLF radiation produced in lightning strikes, which can travel great distances within the Earth-ionosphere waveguide (EIWG) before penetrating the ionosphere, and exciting a duct. Field-aligned ducts of enhanced plasma density guide the propagation from one hemisphere to the other. The location of the duct, relative to the strike that causes the whistler, is unknown. Whistler time series from Tihany, Hungary, have been cross-correlated with lightning data obtained from the World Wide Lightning Location Network (WWLLN). The results show that whistlers observed at Tihany originate mainly from lightning strikes in an area with a radius of approximately 1 000 km surrounding the magnetic conjugate point in the Indian Ocean just east of East London, South Africa. A clear diurnal distinction was seen in that the correlation is maximised when the whistler station and the source region are in darkness. This is believed to relate to the diurnal variation of the ionosphere, which becomes more transparent to VLF waves at night.

  • Seasonal and diurnal variation of lightning activity over southern Africa and correlation with European whistler observations
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Annales Geophysicae. - : Copernicus GmbH. - 0992-7689 .- 1432-0576. ; 24:2, s. 529-542
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Lightning Imaging Sensor (LIS) data have been analysed to ascertain the statistical pattern of lightning occurrence over southern Africa. The diurnal and seasonal variations are mapped in detail. The highest flash rates (107.2 km(-2) y(-1)) occur close to the equator but maxima are also found over Madagascar (32.1 km(-2) y(-1)) and South Africa (26.4 km(-2) y(-1)). A feature of the statistics is a relatively steady contribution from over the ocean off the east coast of South Africa that appears to be associated with the Agulhas current. Lightning statistics are of intrinsic meteorological interest but they also relate to the occurrence of whistlers in the conjugate region. Whistler observations are made at Tihany, Hungary. Statistics reveal that the period of most frequent whistler occurrence does not correspond to the maximum in lightning activity in the conjugate region but is strongly influenced by ionospheric illumination and other factors. The whistler/flash ratio, R, shows remarkable variations during the year and has a peak that is narrowly confined to February and March.

  • Callose Biosynthesis Regulates Symplastic Trafficking during Root Development
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Developmental Cell. - : Elsevier BV. - 1534-5807 .- 1878-1551. ; 21:6, s. 1144-1155
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Plant cells are connected through plasmodesmata (PD), membrane-lined channels that allow symplastic movement of molecules between cells. However, little is known about the role of PD-mediated signaling during plant morphogenesis. Here, we describe an Arabidopsis gene, CALS3/GSL12. Gain-of-function mutations in CALS3 result in increased accumulation of callose (beta-1,3-glucan) at the PD, a decrease in PD aperture, defects in root development, and reduced intercellular trafficking. Enhancement of CALS3 expression during phloem development suppressed loss-of-function mutations in the phloem abundant callose synthase, CALS7 indicating that CALS3 is a bona fide callose synthase. CALS3 alleles allowed us to spatially and temporally control the PD aperture between plant tissues. Using this tool, we are able to show that movement of the transcription factor SHORT-ROOT and microRNA1 65 between the stele and the endodermis is PD dependent. Taken together, we conclude that regulated callose biosynthesis at PD is essential for cell signaling.
