  • Roadmap on energy harvesting materials
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Journal of Physics. - : IOP Publishing. - 2515-7639. ; 6:4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Ambient energy harvesting has great potential to contribute to sustainable development and address growing environmental challenges. Converting waste energy from energy-intensive processes and systems (e.g. combustion engines and furnaces) is crucial to reducing their environmental impact and achieving net-zero emissions. Compact energy harvesters will also be key to powering the exponentially growing smart devices ecosystem that is part of the Internet of Things, thus enabling futuristic applications that can improve our quality of life (e.g. smart homes, smart cities, smart manufacturing, and smart healthcare). To achieve these goals, innovative materials are needed to efficiently convert ambient energy into electricity through various physical mechanisms, such as the photovoltaic effect, thermoelectricity, piezoelectricity, triboelectricity, and radiofrequency wireless power transfer. By bringing together the perspectives of experts in various types of energy harvesting materials, this Roadmap provides extensive insights into recent advances and present challenges in the field. Additionally, the Roadmap analyses the key performance metrics of these technologies in relation to their ultimate energy conversion limits. Building on these insights, the Roadmap outlines promising directions for future research to fully harness the potential of energy harvesting materials for green energy anytime, anywhere.

  • Environmental water flow can boost foraging success of the juvenile rapa whelk Rapana venosa (Muricidae) in aquaculture tanks with still or flowing water : Indication of chemosensory foraging
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Aquaculture. - : Elsevier BV. - 0044-8486. ; 513
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Artificial breeding of Rapana venosa has been attempted in China, but the high mortality rate of rapa whelk juveniles (10–40 mm) seriously restricts the breeding success of this species in artificial cultivation and the overall aquaculture industry, and thus the scale of industrialization is far from being realized. One main factor was found to contribute to this high mortality rate: the low predation efficiency of juveniles. We studied the foraging behavior of various sized R. venosa juveniles in still, flowing, and circulating water, with the juveniles being positioned either upstream or downstream from the prey in the flowing water experiments. Our findings demonstrated that the distance between juveniles and prey in still water significantly restricted the ability of juveniles to locate food, but water flow significantly enhanced this ability. In addition, the small-sized juveniles were found to be more active predators than the larger sized juveniles. Our findings demonstrated that circulating water flow is important to improve the survival and growth rate of juveniles in R. venosa cultures. Our results broaden the understanding of chemical orientation in gastropods and can be used to develop or improve commercial breeding strategies for R. venosa.

  • Mechanisms of N2O Formation from Char Combustion
  • 1996
  • Ingår i: Energy & Fuels. - 1520-5029 .- 0887-0624. ; 10:1, s. 203-208
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper describes an experimental study on N2O and NOx emission from char combustion. Experiments have been carried out in a fixed bed reactor in the temperature range of 973−1323 K. Oxygen concentrations for combustion, temperature, and char type have been found to have strong effects on both N2O and NOx emissions. With an increasing temperature, N2O reaches a peak at 1073 K and then decreases with temperature. At the same time NOx remains nearly the same. When oxygen concentration increases, the concentration of N2O increases and NOx first increases and then decreases. The char with higher nitrogen content emits more N2O, indicating that nitrogen oxides come from char-N. When NO is included in the inlet gases, much more N2O is produced from char combustion. This suggests that the reaction of NO + O2 + char is the main pathway for N2O formation. Another pathway, i.e., the homogeneous oxidation of HCN from the gasfication of char, seems to be important as well.

  • Nitrogen oxides emission from a circulating fluidized bed combustor
  • 1998
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Energy Research. - 1099-114X .- 0363-907X. ; 20:11, s. 1015-1025
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Experiments were carried out in a pilot-scale circulating fluidized bed (CFB) coal combustor to investigate the mechanism of N,O formation, nitrogen oxides (including NO, and N,O) emission and the effect of temperature, excess air ratio, recirculation ratio, etc. The concentrations of nitrous oxide and nitric oxide were measured along the height of the CFB furnace. N,O concentration increased with height, and in the exit of the combustor N,O reached the highest level. NO,, however, decreased with height, showing the inverse trend compared with N,O. The N,O emission decreased sharply with the rise of temperature at the bottom of the combustor; at the same time, the NO, concentration increased.

  • Dipyridamole enhances the anti-cancer ability of aspirin against colorectal cancer by inducing apoptosis in an unfolded protein response-dependent manner
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Cellular Oncology. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 2211-3428 .- 2211-3436. ; 46:4, s. 953-967
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • PURPOSE: Available evidence indicates that dipyridamole enhances the anti-thrombotic effects of aspirin for the prevention of secondary strokes. Aspirin is a well-known non-steroid anti-inflammatory drug. This anti-inflammatory property has turned aspirin into a potential drug for inflammation-related cancers such as colorectal cancer (CRC). Here, we aimed to explore whether the anti-cancer effect of aspirin against CRC could be improved by combined administration with dipyridamole.METHODS: Population-based clinical data analysis was conducted to assess a possible therapeutic effect of combined dipyridamole and aspirin treatment in inhibiting CRC compared with either monotherapy. This therapeutic effect was further verified in different CRC mouse models, i.e. an orthotopic xenograft mouse model, an AOM/DSS mouse model, an Apc min/+ mouse model and a patient derived xenograft (PDX) mouse model. The in vitro effects of the drugs on CRC cells were tested using CCK8 and flow cytometry assays. RNA-Seq, Western blotting, qRT-PCR and flow cytometry were used to identify the underlying molecular mechanisms. RESULTS: We found that dipyridamole combined with aspirin had a better inhibitory effect on CRC than either monotherapy alone. The enhanced anti-cancer effect of the combined use of dipyridamole with aspirin was found to rely on the induction of an overwhelmed endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress and subsequent pro-apoptotic unfolded protein response (UPR), which was different from the anti-platelet effect.CONCLUSIONS: Our data indicate that the anti-cancer effect of aspirin against CRC may be enhanced by combined administration with dipyridamole. In case further clinical studies confirm our findings, these may be repurposed as adjuvant agents.

  • Stable and efficient hybrid Ag-In-S/ZnS@SiO2-carbon quantum dots nanocomposites for white light-emitting diodes
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Chemical Engineering Journal. - : Elsevier. - 1385-8947 .- 1873-3212. ; 393
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • As a promising energy-saving technique, the eco-friendly and low-cost solid-state white light-emitting diodes (WLEDs) based on quantum dots (QDs) have been widely studied. Herein, a WLED device prepared by core-shell structure nanocomposites based on Ag-In-S/ZnS@SiO2 quantum dots (AIS@SiO2) and carbon quantum dots (CDs) was successfully constructed. CDs were combined onto the surface of AIS@SiO2 QDs to synthesize Ag-In-S/ZnS@SiO2-Carbon quantum dots (AIS-CDs) nanocomposites with a white-light emission, which successfully overcome the quenching effect of CDs induced by conventional aggregation. The as-prepared AIS-CDs nanocomposites presented high stability and a photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) of 35%. Moreover, the corresponding AIS-CDs nanocomposites-based WLEDs demonstrated the color coordinate of (0.32, 0.33), which is comparable to the pure white light (0.33, 0.33); furthermore, the luminous efficiency of the as-prepared WLEDs showed 15.1 lm W-1. These results reported herein may open up a new avenue for the development of high-performance, low-cost, and environmentally-friendly WLEDs.

  • Rethinking Long-Tailed Visual Recognition with Dynamic Probability Smoothing and Frequency Weighted Focusing
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Proceedings - International Conference on Image Processing, ICIP. - 1522-4880. ; , s. 435-439
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Deep learning models trained on long-tailed (LT) datasets often exhibit bias towards head classes with high frequency. This paper highlights the limitations of existing solutions that combine class- and instance-level re-weighting loss in a naive manner. Specifically, we demonstrate that such solutions result in overfitting the training set, significantly impacting the rare classes. To address this issue, we propose a novel loss function that dynamically reduces the influence of outliers and assigns class-dependent focusing parameters. We also introduce a new long-tailed dataset, ICText-LT, featuring various image qualities and greater realism than artificially sampled datasets. Our method has proven effective, outperforming existing methods through superior quantitative results on CIFAR-LT, Tiny ImageNet-LT, and our new ICText-LT datasets. • When IC meets text: Towards a rich annotated integrated circuit text dataset
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Pattern Recognition. - 0031-3203. ; 147
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Automated Optical Inspection (AOI) is a process that uses cameras to autonomously scan printed circuit boards for quality control. Text is often printed on chip components, and it is crucial that this text is correctly recognized during AOI, as it contains valuable information. In this paper, we introduce \textit{ICText}, the largest dataset for text detection and recognition on integrated circuits. Uniquely, it includes labels for character quality attributes such as low contrast, blurry, and broken. While loss-reweighting and Curriculum Learning (CL) have been proposed to improve object detector performance by balancing positive and negative samples and gradually training the model from easy to hard samples, these methods have had limited success with one-stage object detectors commonly used in industry. To address this, we propose Attribute-Guided Curriculum Learning (AGCL), which leverages the labeled character quality attributes in \textit{ICText}. Our extensive experiments demonstrate that AGCL can be applied to different detectors in a plug-and-play fashion to achieve higher Average Precision (AP), significantly outperforming existing methods on \textit{ICText} without any additional computational overhead during inference. Furthermore, we show that AGCL is also effective on the generic object detection dataset Pascal VOC. Our code and dataset will be publicly available at \href{https://github.com/chunchet-ng/ICText-AGCL}{https://github.com/chunchet-ng/ICText-AGCL}.
