  • Contextual and conceptual ambiguities in supervision of artistic research : experiences from Konstnärliga forskarskolan
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Acts of Creation : thoughts on artistic research supervision. - 9789187483165 ; , s. 189-220
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • To accept the nomination to become the supervisor of a PhD candidate is not only to step into a specific, challenging and potentially rewarding relationship, but also to enter a new zone of uncertainty: what kind of contribution to this relationship is expected from me? In what ways is this new professional task framed and supported by the institutional context to which I belong? What do I gain from becoming a supervisor? In this chapter we draw together our experiences of spending many hundreds of hours listening to and discussing with supervisors of PhD candidates from a wide variety of research domains. We use our experiences from ten years of arranging pedagogical support for supervisors in the form of courses and seminars, and use what we have learned in these meeting places as material to describe how we perceive the cultural and contextual conditions for supervising PhD candidates both in general and in the emerging field of artistic research. The aim is therefore not to describe or evaluate our pedagogical efforts, but to use what we have encountered and reflected on in seminars with supervisors over the years. Another aim is to shed some light on the cultural and contextual conditions for supervising artistic research by comparing and contrasting the situation of the supervisors in this relatively new field with the situation in other fields of research. A more personal aim is to try to disentangle some of the persistent puzzlement that followed us through the years with Konstnärliga forskarskolan (KFS). Why was it that over and over again we were troubled by a feeling that the supervisors, compared to our expectations, were not regarded as being crucially important for the development of artistic research? In this chapter we will first discuss the importance of supervisors for doctoral education and for the regeneration and development of research, both in general and for new fields, with continuous references to artistic research, as it was mirrored to us through KFS. We will then continue along a road where we look at a number of contextual conditions (such as the learning trajectories of artists) and practiced concepts (such as interdisciplinarity and practice-based research), where we have experienced intriguing differences in artistic research when compared to other research environments. Finally, we offer two scenarios staging the institutional and cultural conditions for supervising artistic research in two quite different ways. They are constructed as ideal types and as a tool to disentangle some of the ambiguities supervisors have to face in the real settings where they meet their PhD candidates, and where everything is mixed up, as in life itself. Finally, we end our chapter by pointing out a ghost scenario, which we hope will disappear with the continued development of artistic research.

  • Design and Synthesis of BACE-1 Inhibitors Containing a New Hydroxyethylene (HE) Scaffold: Potent activities in a cellular assay
  • Annan publikation (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • In a preceding report from our group we disclosed the development of a novel HE transition state isostere with a difluorophenoxymethyl side chain in the P1 position and a methoxy group in the P1’ position furnishing highly potent inhibitors of BACE-1 (i.e. lead compound 1), which moreover exhibit very promising selectivity over cathepsin D. In a continuation of this work with the aim at improving on the cell-based activity and pharmacokinetic properties, we have further developed the SAR for the P1 side chain of inhibitor 1 whereby the P1 side chain oxygen has been substituted for an amine, a carbon or a bond. The chemistry developed for the previous HE inhibitor structure 1 has now been extended to readily accommodate the introduction of new P1 side chains into this new HE scaffold. These modifications have given rise to several highly potent inhibitors where the most potent displayed a BACE-1 Ki value of 0.2 nM and a cell-based Aβ40 IC50 value of 9 nM. Thus, regarding the enzyme inhibition in the cell assay a more than 600-fold improvement compared to compound 1 was achieved via minor structural alterations.

  • A framework for assessing urban greenery's effects and valuing its ecosystem services
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Journal of Environmental Management. - : Academic Press. - 0301-4797 .- 1095-8630. ; 205, s. 274-285
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Ongoing urban exploitation is increasing pressure to transform urban green spaces, while there is increasing awareness that greenery provides a range of important benefits to city residents. In efforts to help resolve associated problems we have developed a framework for integrated assessments of ecosystem service (ES) benefits and values provided by urban greenery, based on the ecosystem service cascade model. The aim is to provide a method for assessing the contribution to, and valuing, multiple ES provided by urban greenery that can be readily applied in routine planning processes. The framework is unique as it recognizes that an urban greenery comprises several components and functions that can contribute to multiple ecosystem services in one or more ways via different functional traits (e.g. foliage characteristics) for which readily measured indicators have been identified. The framework consists of five steps including compilation of an inventory of indicator; application of effectivity factors to rate indicators' effectiveness; estimation of effects; estimation of benefits for each ES; estimation of the total ES value of the ecosystem. The framework was applied to assess ecosystem services provided by trees, shrubs, herbs, birds, and bees, in green areas spanning an urban gradient in Gothenburg, Sweden. Estimates of perceived values of ecosystem services were obtained from interviews with the public and workshop activities with civil servants. The framework is systematic and transparent at all stages and appears to have potential utility in the existing spatial planning processes.

  • A general non-complex analytical expression for the nth Fourier component of a wavelength-modulated Lorentzian lineshape function
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: Journal of Quantitative Spectroscopy and Radiative Transfer. - : Elsevier. - 0022-4073 .- 1879-1352. ; 68:3, s. 299-317
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A general, analytical expression for the nth Fourier component of a wavelength-modulated Lorentzian lineshape function in terms of a normalized detuning and a normalized modulation amplitude is derived. The expression is cast in a purely real form and is therefore easier to use than the normally used expression, which is given in terms of various combinations (sums, square roots, and powers) of complex expressions and their complex conjugates. Analytical expressions for the nine first Fourier components (n = 0,...,8), clearly showing their dependence on normalized detuning and modulation amplitude, are explicitly given. Simplified expressions for the even harmonics of the Fourier components on resonance, at which they take their maximum value, solely given in terms of the normalized modulation amplitude, are also explicitly given. It is shown that previously published, numerically calculated conditions for maximization of higher-order Fourier components are incorrect. The normalized modulation amplitudes that maximize the four lowest even harmonics of the Fourier components, i.e. for n = 2, 4, 6, and 8, are 2.20, 4.12, 6.08, and 8.06, respectively.

  • Work-life balance predicted work ability two years later: A cohort study of employees in the Swedish energy and water sector
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: BMC Public Health. - : BMC. - 1471-2458. ; 21:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background Work-life balance (WLB) is the extent to which individual’s multiple life roles and demands carry over between each role. WLB can be divided into work interference with personal life (WIPL) and personal life interference with work (PLIW). This study aimed to investigate longitudinal associations between WIPL, PLIW and work ability outcomes. Methods In this cohort study, 224 employees in the energy and water sector in Sweden were followed-up over 2 years. Three questions derived from the Work Ability Index were used for measuring work ability outcome: current work ability compared with lifetime best; work ability regarding physical; and mental demands. Logistic regression models were used to analyse longitudinal associations between work ability and WIPL and WIPL respectively, controlling for workplace (company), position at work, experience of leadership quality, demographics, and work ability. Results Work ability compared to lifetime best were associated with WIPL in the adjusted logistic regression models (odds ratio (OR) 1.77, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.15–2.73), and PLIW (OR 3.34, 95% CI 1.66–6.74). Work ability regarding physical demands was associated with WIPL (OR 1.60, 95% CI 1.07–2.40). Work ability regarding mental demands was associated with WIPL (OR 1.59, 95% CI 1.03–2.44) and PLIW (OR 2.88, 95% CI 1.31–6.32).Conclusion In this two-year longitudinal study, lower WIPL predicted good/excellent overall work ability compared with lifetime best, higher work ability regarding physical and mental demands, and lower PLIW predicted good/excellent overall work ability compared with lifetime best and higher work ability regarding and mental demands.
