  • Organisering kring hot och risk
  • 2007

  • Exploring the Performativity Turn in Management Studies
  • 2013
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • One of the contemporary “turns” in management studies is the “performativity” turn. In this paper, we present a genealogy of the concept of performativity as it has been used in management and organization studies (MOS). Starting with the work of Austin, Bateson, Goffman and Lyotard, we move on to more recent debates surrounding the use of the concept by Butler and the STS researchers Callon, Latour and Law, as well as how their ideas have been further translated within MOS. The focus is on how the concept is defined and on the areas of study where performativity has been used. Taken together, the approach to performativity employed has implications for how the concept is understood and translated. Finally, we discuss the particular ontological position of the performative perspective, and its methodological consequences.

  • Multiple institutional logics in union-NGO relations: Private labor regulation in the Swedish Clean Clothes Campaign
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Business Ethics. - : Wiley. - 0962-8770 .- 1467-8608. ; 24:4, s. 347-360
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • © 2015 John Wiley & Sons Ltd. Conflicts between labor unions and nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) often impede private labor regulatory attempts to protect worker rights at supplier factories. Based on a study of a failed private regulatory attempt for Swedish garment retailers, we contribute to existing research into union-NGO relations by demonstrating how conflict arises because unions and NGOs act upon different institutional logics. We also contribute to the institutional logics perspective by challenging the current emphasis on either coexistence or conflict among multiple logics, and showing the heterogeneity in how multiple logics manifest on a local level, how this could shift over time, and suggesting an empirically derived typology of manifestations of multiple logics.

  • Organizational effects on e-business in companies
  • 2002
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The end of the 1990s witnessed a firm establishment of IT, Internet and various forms of e-commerce in business-to-business trade. The new technology is commonly presented as a new, revolutionary way of doing business. In our study we examine this image in practice, describing how a fashionable idea, in this case Internet-based e-commerce, meets local practices at Swedish Technology Corporation (S-Tech). The circulation of the idea is in the hands of many people who can act in many different ways. As a consequence, the idea is continuously changed, often undergoing creative transformations. The specific event under study is the implementation of the e-commerce system called 7Summits at S-Tech's purchase division. The new system is expected to produce drastic changes in the purchasing process as such. As the implementation goes on, several changes of the original plan of the process and of the study itself take place. The implementation of 7Summits is going to take more time than originally planned, and we will continue to follow this process. It has also become clear that the study needs to be expanded beyond S-Tech - to suppliers and contractors, but also to other companies belonging to the holding company A-Tech, since S-Tech cooperates with these in the development of 7Summits. The first insights confirmed also the necessity of applying a gender perspective to study how work tasks, positions and professions in this rather masculine context are changed (or not) by the implementation of e-commerce.

  • When the good times are over: Professionals meet new technology
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Human Relations. - : SAGE Publications. - 0018-7267 .- 1741-282X. ; 62:8, s. 1145-1170
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Information and communication technologies play a key role in contemporary organizations. Supported by a longitudinal study of changes in purchasing practices, owing to the implementation of an e-business system at a large, global corporation, this article shows the interplay between the technology and the role of the users. We argue that the introduction of the e-business system increased the hierarchy and bureaucracy but also that the purchasers' professional identities and established work procedures were threatened by the technology being used. The results indicate how a technological artifact is by no means detached from the broader reformulating of managerial procedures and practices, instead reflecting and embodying some of the managerial virtues of predictability and hierarchy. Since technology is playing an increasingly key role in most industries and domains, it is also suggested that the intersection between technology and professions be examined in more detail.

  • Look What's Back! Institutional Complexity, Reversibility and the Knotting of Logics
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: British Journal of Management. - : Wiley. - 1045-3172 .- 1467-8551. ; 27:2, s. 228-248
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Through a comparative historical study of community pharmacy in the UK, Italy, Sweden and the USA, the authors examine what happens to institutional arrangements designed to resolve ongoing conflicts between institutional logics over extended periods of time. It is found that institutional arrangements can reflect the heterogeneity of multiple logics without resulting in hybridization or dominance. Because logics remain active, similar conflicts can reappear multiple times. It is found that the durability of the configurations of competing logics reflects the characteristics of the polities in which fields are embedded. The dominance of any societal institutional order leads to more stable field-level arrangements. The authors suggest that the metaphor of institutional knots and the related image of institutional knotting are useful to capture aspects of this dynamic and to foreground the discursive and material work that allows multiple logics to coexist in local arrangements with variable durability.
