    • Objective: The formation of glucose degradation products (GDPs) during sterilization of peritoneal dialysis fluids (PDFs) is one of the most important aspects of biocompatibility of glucose-containing PDFs. Producers of PDFs are thus trying to minimize the level of GDPs in their products. 3,4-Dideoxyglucosone-3-ene (3,4-DGE) has been identified as the most bioreactive GDP in PDFs. It exists in a temperature-dependent equilibrium with a pool of 3-deoxyglucosone (3-DG) and is a precursor in the irreversible formation of 5-hydroxymethyl furaldehyde (5-HMF). The aim of the present study was to investigate how to minimize GDPs in PDFs and how different manufacturers have succeeded in doing so. Design: Glucose solutions at different pHs and concentrations were heat sterilized and 3-DG, 3,4-DGE, 5-HMF, formaldehyde, and acetaldehyde were analyzed. Conventional as well as biocompatible fluids from different manufacturers were analyzed in parallel for GDP concentrations. Results: The concentrations of 3-DG and 3,4-DGE produced during heat sterilization decreased when pH was reduced to about 2. Concentration of 5-HMF decreased when pH was reduced to 2.6. After further decrease to a pH of 2.0, concentration of 5-HMF increased slightly, and below a pH of 2.0 it increased considerably, together with formaldehyde; 3-DG continued to drop and 3,4-DGE remained constant. Inhibition of cell growth was paralleled by 3,4-DGE concentration at pH 2.0-6.0. A high glucose concentration lowered concentrations of 3,4-DGE and 3-DG at pH 5.5 and of 5-HMF at pH 1. At pH 2.2 and 3.2, glucose concentration had a minor effect on the formation of GDPs. All conventional PDFs contained high levels of 3,4-DGE and 3-DG. Concentrations were considerably lower in the biocompatible fluids. However, the concentration of 5-HMF was slightly higher in all the biocompatible fluids. Conclusion: The best way to avoid reactive GDPs is to have a pH between 2.0 and 2.6 during sterilization. If pHs outside this range are used, it becomes more important to have There are large variations in GDPs, both within and between biocompatible and conventionally manufactured PDFs.

    • Several bird species have advanced the timing of their spring migration in response to recent climate change. European short-distance migrants, wintering in temperate areas, have been assumed to be more affected by change in the European climate than long-distance migrants wintering in the tropics. However, we show that tong-distance migrants have advanced their spring arrival in Scandinavia more than short-distance migrants. By analyzing a long-term data set from southern Italy, we show that long-distance migrants also pass through the Mediterranean region earlier. We argue that this may reflect a climate-driven evolutionary change in the timing of spring migration.

    • Both's comment questions our suggestion that the advanced spring arrival time of long-distance migratory birds in Scandinavia and the Mediterranean may reflect a climate-driven evolutionary change. We present additional arguments to support our hypothesis but underscore the importance of additional studies involving direct tests of evolutionary change.

    • Long-term data from standardized monitoring programmes at bird observatories are becoming increasingly available. These data are frequently used for detecting changes in the timing of bird migration that may relate to recent climate change. We present an overview of problematic issues in the analysis of these data, and review approaches to and methods for characterizing bird migration phenology and its change over time. Methods are illustrated and briefly compared using autumn data on garden warbler Sylvia borin from a standardized mist-netting programme at Lista bird observatory, southern Norway. Bird migration phenology is usually characterized rather coarsely using a small number of sample statistics such as mean, median and selected quantiles. We present 2 alternative approaches. Smoothing methods describe the within-season pattern in the data at an arbitrary level of detail, while fitting a parametric seasonal distribution curve offers a coarse description of migration phenology relatively robust to sampling effects. Various methods for analyzing linear trends in the timing of bird migration are reviewed and discussed. Exploratory studies using long-term data gathered at bird observatories can yield more detailed insight into the phenomenon of bird migration and how phenologies relate to climate. Methodological advances are needed, particularly in order to better characterize the shape of phenological distributions and separate between sampling effects and 'true' phenology.

  • On the Performance of Diffuse Ceiling Ventilation in Classrooms: A Pre-Occupancy Study at a School in Southern Sweden

    • The implementation and application of diffused ceiling ventilation (DCV) is gradually gaining momentum, especially in Denmark, Finland, and the Netherlands. In countries such as Sweden, the application is limited despite the favorable conditions for implementation. The current study investigates the performance of DCV and mixing ventilation in a pre-occupancy field study for newly renovated classrooms in Southern Sweden. Two classrooms at the school were installed with diffuse ceiling ventilation while the rest had mixing ventilation. The objective of the study was to compare and evaluate the ventilation performance in terms of indoor environmental quality parameters such as thermal comfort, air quality indexes, airflow, and temperature distribution. Pre-occupancy measurements were performed in two classrooms with similar room characteristics, with one room running under mixing ventilation and the other under DCV. Constant temperature anemometers, thermocouples, and INNOVA thermal comfort were used to measure the indoor air speeds, temperature, and thermal comfort, respectively. Tracer gas measurements, with SF6, were performed to assess air quality. Additionally acoustic measurements were conducted to assess the acoustic benefits of DCV on reducing ventilation noise. The results demonstrate that DCV offers similar indoor environmental conditions to mixing ventilation but has better acoustic performance especially on reducing the ventilation noise. Indoor environmental conditions were very homogeneous under DCV with mixing ventilation showing tendencies for short circuit ventilation. This study demonstrates that DCV has a potential for implementation in Swedish schools with minimal system modification on existing ventilation and air distribution systems.
