  • Balance-related efficacy compared with balance function in patients with acute stroke.
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Physiotherapy theory and practice. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1532-5040 .- 0959-3985. ; 24:2, s. 105-11
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • It is well known that patients who have suffered a stroke have problems with balance and have feelings of unsteadiness. The aim of this study was to analyse the correlation between how patients estimate their perceived confidence in task performance without falling and the objective assessment of balance made by a physiotherapist, and whether the Falls Efficacy Scale (FES(S)) is to be recommended for use in patients in the acute phase of stroke. Sixty patients divided into two groups assessed their belief to perform daily life activities without fear of falling using the FES(S) and were assessed by using the Berg Balance Scale (BBS) and Timed Up and Go (TUG) by a physiotherapist. Group 1 assessed themselves before, whereas Group 2 assessed themselves after the objective assessment. The correlation between the FES(S) and the TUG was moderate to good, but these two scales consider different aspects and dimensions of balance, ability, and belief and are therefore not interchangeable. The correlation between FES(S) and BBS was low to moderate. The conclusion of this study was that the FES(S) is not to be recommended as a single measurement in the acute phase of stroke because it does not measure actual balance function.

  • MicroRNAs : novel regulators involved in the pathogenesis of psoriasis?
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: PLOS ONE. - : Public Library of Science (PLoS). - 1932-6203. ; 2:7
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • MicroRNAs are a recently discovered class of posttranscriptional regulators of gene expression with critical functions in health and disease. Psoriasis is the most prevalent chronic inflammatory skin disease in adults, with a substantial negative impact on the patients' quality of life. Here we show for the first time that psoriasis-affected skin has a specific microRNA expression profile when compared with healthy human skin or with another chronic inflammatory skin disease, atopic eczema. Among the psoriasis-specific microRNAs, we identified leukocyte-derived microRNAs and one keratinocyte-derived microRNA, miR-203. In a panel of 21 different human organs and tissues, miR-203 showed a highly skin-specific expression profile. Among the cellular constituents of the skin, it was exclusively expressed by keratinocytes. The up-regulation of miR-203 in psoriatic plaques was concurrent with the down-regulation of an evolutionary conserved target of miR-203, suppressor of cytokine signaling 3 (SOCS-3), which is involved in inflammatory responses and keratinocyte functions. Our results suggest that microRNA deregulation is involved in the pathogenesis of psoriasis and contributes to the dysfunction of the cross talk between resident and infiltrating cells. Taken together, a new layer of regulatory mechanisms is involved in the pathogenesis of chronic inflammatory skin diseases.

  • Mälsåker Revisited: Museum och Iscensättning. : Kungl Konsthögskolan. Restaureringskonst 2015-2016
  • 2016

  • Cerebrospinal Fluid Patterns and the Risk of Future Dementia in Early, Incident Parkinson Disease
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: JAMA Neurology. - : American Medical Association. - 2168-6149 .- 2168-6157. ; 72:10, s. 1175-1182
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • IMPORTANCE: Alterations in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) have been found in Parkinson disease (PD) and in PD dementia (PDD), but the prognostic importance of such changes is not well known. In vivo biomarkers for disease processes in PD are important for future development of disease-modifying therapies. OBJECTIVE: To assess the diagnostic and prognostic value of a panel of CSF biomarkers in patients with early PD and related disorders. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: Regional population-based, prospective cohort study of idiopathic parkinsonism that included patients diagnosed between January 1, 2004, and April 30, 2009, by amovement disorder team at a university hospital that represented the only neurology clinic in the region. Participants were 128 nondemented patients with new-onset parkinsonism (104 with PD, 11 with multiple system atrophy, and 13 with progressive supranuclear palsy) who were followed up for 5 to 9 years. At baseline, CSF from 30 healthy control participants was obtained for comparison. MAIN OUTCOMES AND MEASURES: Cerebrospinal fluid concentrations of neurofilament light chain protein, Aβ1-42, total tau, phosphorylated tau, α-synuclein, and heart fatty acid-binding protein were quantified by 2 blinded measurements (at baseline and after 1 year). Follow-up included an extensive neuropsychological assessment. As PD outcome variables, mild cognitive impairment and incident PDD were diagnosed based on published criteria. RESULTS: Among the 128 study participants, the 104 patients with early PD had a different CSF pattern compared with the 13 patients with progressive supranuclear palsy (baseline area under the receiver operating characteristic curve, 0.87; P < .0001) and the 30 control participants (baseline area under the receiver operating characteristic curve, 0.69; P = .0021). A CSF biomarker pattern associated with the development of PDD was observed. In PD, high neurofilament light chain protein, low Aβ1-42, and high heart fatty acid-binding protein at baseline were related to future PDD as analyzed by Cox proportional hazards regression models. Combined, these early biomarkers predicted PDD with high accuracy (hazard ratio, 11.8; 95% CI, 3.3-42.1; P = .0001) after adjusting for possible confounders. CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE: The analyzed CSF biomarkers have potential usefulness as a diagnostic tool in patients with parkinsonism. In PD, high neurofilament light chain protein, low Aβ1-42, and high heart fatty acid-binding protein were related to future PDD, providing new insights into the etiology of PDD.

  • Thalidomide and dexamethasone vs. bortezomib and dexamethasone for melphalan refractory myeloma: a randomized study.
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: European journal of haematology. - : Wiley. - 0902-4441 .- 1600-0609. ; 88:6, s. 485-496
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Objectives: Thalidomide and bortezomib have been frequently used for second-line therapy in patients with myeloma relapsing after or refractory to initial melphalan-based treatment, but no randomized trials have been published comparing these two treatment alternatives. Methods: Thalidomide- and bortezomib-naïve patients with melphalan refractory myeloma were randomly assigned to low-dose thalidomide + dexamethasone (Thal-Dex) or bortezomib + dexamethasone (Bort-Dex). At progression on either therapy, the patients were offered crossover to the alternative drug combination. An estimated 300 patients would be needed for the trial to detect a 50% difference in median PFS between the treatment arms. Results: After inclusion of 131 patients, the trial was prematurely closed because of low accrual. Sixty-seven patients were randomized to Thal-Dex and 64 to Bort-Dex. Progression-free survival was similar (median, 9.0 months for Thal-Dex and 7.2 for Bort-Dex). Response rate was similar (55% for Thal-Dex and 63% for Bort-Dex), but time to response was shorter (P < 0.05) and the VGPR rate higher (P < 0.01) for Bort-Dex. Time-to-other treatment after crossover was similar (median, 13.2 months for Thal-Dex and 11.2 months for Bort-Dex), as was overall survival (22.8 months for Thal-Dex and 19.0 for Bort-Dex). Venous thromboembolism was seen in seven patients and cerebrovascular events in four patients in the Thal-Dex group. Severe neuropathy, reactivation of herpes virus infections, and mental depression were more frequently observed in the Bort-Dex group. In the quality-of-life analysis, no difference was noted for physical function, pain, and global quality of life. Fatigue and sleep disturbances were significantly more prevalent in the Bort-Dex group. Conclusions: Thalidomide (50–100 mg daily) in combination with dexamethasone seems to have an efficacy comparable with that of bortezomib and dexamethasone in melphalan refractory myeloma. However, the statistical strength of the results in this study is limited by the low number of included patients.

  • Effect of carbon content on the Curie temperature of WC-NiFe cemented carbides
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: International journal of refractory metals & hard materials. - : Elsevier. - 0263-4368. ; 78, s. 27-31
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We have investigated the effect of the carbon content on the Curie temperature of a cemented carbide composite material with a Ni-Fe alloy as the binder phase and WC as the hard phase. In the carbon concentration range from 5.72 to 5.83 wt% carbon, which covers the interval where WC coexists with fcc Ni-Fe without other phases (the ‘carbon window’), the Curie temperature rises from 200 to 527 °C. This result indicates the possibility to use the Curie temperature to determine the carbon balance in the system. With thermodynamic calculations and kinetic simulations we can quantitatively establish the correlation between the carbon and tungsten content of the binder phase and the Curie temperature. This strong compositional effect on the Curie temperature is quantitatively very different from the conventional Co-based cemented carbides, with Curie temperatures of about 950–1050 °C.

  • Evaluating magnetic properties of composites from model alloys – Application to alternative binder cemented carbides
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Scripta Materialia. - : Acta Materialia Inc. - 1359-6462 .- 1872-8456. ; 168, s. 96-99
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The magnetic properties of 85Ni-15Fe model alloys containing Co, W and C have been studied with the intent to isolate the influence of alloy chemistry on quality control measurements of alternative binder cemented carbides. The results show a strong influence of dissolved W on the Curie temperature and the saturation magnetization. The amount of dissolved C, and the presence of WC precipitates, on the other hand, is shown to have negligible effect. Furthermore, the magnetic coercivity is indicated to be entirely dominated by the microstructural features and quite insensitive to composition.

  • Elevated Peripheral Allergen-Specific T Cell Response Is Crucial for a Positive Atopy Patch Test Reaction
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: International Archives of Allergy and Immunology. - : S. Karger AG. - 1018-2438 .- 1423-0097. ; 150:1, s. 51-58
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Atopic eczema is a chronic inflammatory skin disease in which several subgroups of cases can be identified. Atopy patch testing (APT) reveals allergen sensitization also in atopic eczema patients devoid of detectable allergen-specific IgE, suggesting the importance of factors other than IgE in the reaction. Here we investigate the relationship between APT reactions and allergen-specific peripheral IgE and T cell reactivity in atopic eczema patients. Methods: Adult patients with atopic eczema (n = 64) and healthy controls (n = 24) were analyzed for reactivity to Malassezia sympodialis extract by APT, measurement of specific plasma IgE and in vitro determination of the frequency of allergen-reactive peripheral blood mononuclear cells producing interleukin-4 and interleukin-5 using the ELISpot method. Results: When combining the results of the APT, IgE measurements and the ELISpot analyses, reactivity to M. sympodialis was found in a majority of the atopic eczema patients (69%), whereas the healthy controls were negative throughout. T cell reactivity to M. sympodialis, manifested by production of both interleukins 4 and 5, was highly predictive for a positive APT reaction and displayed a strongly positive correlation with the APT score. In contrast, the allergen-specific IgE levels did not predict the APT outcome, and no correlation could be found between the IgE levels and the APT score. Conclusion: Peripheral allergen-specific T helper 2 cell-mediated reactivity appears to be required for a positive APT reaction to M. sympodialis. The diagnostic potential of measuring peripheral allergen-specific T cell responses should be considered in atopic eczema.

  • Annual climate variation modifies nitrogen induced carbon accumulation of Pinus sylvestris forests
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Ecological Applications. - : Wiley. - 1051-0761 .- 1939-5582. ; 27, s. 1838-1851
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We report results from long-term simulated external nitrogen (N) input experiments in three northern Pinus sylvestris forests, two of moderately high and one of moderately low productivity, assessing effects on annual net primary production (NPP) of woody mass and its interannual variation in response to variability in weather conditions. A sigmoidal response of wood NPP to external N inputs was observed in the both higher and lower productivity stands, reaching a maximum of similar to 65% enhancement regardless of the native site productivity, saturating at an external N input of 4-5 g N . m(-2) . yr(-1). The rate of increase in wood NPP and the N response efficiency (REN, increase in wood NPP per external N input) were maximized at an external N input of similar to 3 gN . m(-2) (.) yr(-1), regardless of site productivity. The maximum REN was greater in the higher productivity than the lower productivity stand (similar to 20 vs. similar to 14 g C/g N). The N-induced enhancement of wood NPP and its REN were, however, markedly contingent on climatic variables. In both of the higher and lower productivity stands, wood NPP increased with growing season precipitation (P), but only up to similar to 400 mm. The sensitivity of the response to P increased with increasing external N inputs. Increasing growing season temperature (T) somewhat increased the N-induced drought effect, whereas decreasing T reduced the drought effect. These responses of wood NPP infused a large temporal variation to REN, making the use of a fixed value unadvisable. Based on these results, we suggest that regional climate conditions and future climate scenarios should be considered when modeling carbon sequestration in response to N deposition in boreal P. sylvestris, and possibly other forests.

  • Queera rörliga bilder : Queer moving images
  • 2017
  • Bok (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Queer Moving Images and the Fragility and Temporality of Their Existence – Curatorial and artistic issues on moving images in a queer context. Queer Moving Images includes texts, talks, films, music and lectures, all of which concern issues surounding the moving image in a queer context. Essays such as Amelie Björck’s To come into being in a queer time and Louise Wolthers’ Queering the family: images of reproduction both make links to the film Spermwhore, the creation of which is outlined in On Research In What’s Most Private by Anna Linder. The somewhat overlooked film Mai Zetterling’s Stockholm is discussed in detail within. Ingrid Rydberg’s article further contributes to the knowledge of the unique Swedish film scene in the 1970s by addressing films such as Damned Queers,The Woman in your life is you and Eva & Maria. You are invited to take part in the panel discussion on Susan Sontag’s time in Sweden and to follow the experimental cinematic process of Joey Carducci. The volume also includes moving images; the film Spermwhore and Barbara Hammer’s lecture MAKING MOVIES OUT OF SEX AND LIFE (and making it all transparent).
