  • Interkollegialt lärande för handledning och bedömning av examensarbete
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Högskolepedagogisk debatt. - 2000-9216. ; :1, s. 27-37

  • Challenges faced in daily life by persons with type 2 diabetes : a meta-synthesis
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Chronic Illness. - 1742-3953 .- 1745-9206. ; 15:3, s. 167-186
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • ObjectivesTo derive improved understanding of the implicit meanings of challenges in daily life from the perspective of persons with type 2 diabetes.MethodsA meta-synthesis was conducted with an interpretive and constructivist approach. Four databases were searched for articles published between 2007 and 2011, producing 37 articles for analysis. Van Deurzen's life world theory was applied as an analytic grid.ResultsChallenges in daily life with type 2 diabetes could be understood as living in a tension between opposing forces, implying a struggle with inevitable paradoxes: living in the present and for the future, trusting oneself while relying on others, and being normal while feeling changed and different.DiscussionThis synthesis adds knowledge to previous understanding of living with type 2 diabetes, revealing the complexity of daily life when struggling with a lifelong illness. Person-centred care could be used to understand what challenges diabetes may cause in family and working life and the ambivalent feelings the illness can lead to. Future research is needed to implement and evaluate a person-centred care in practice. Since new qualitative research is continuously added to this topic, metasyntheses should be undertaken regularly.

  • Courage and nursing practice : a theoretical analysis
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Nursing Ethics. - 0969-7330 .- 1477-0989. ; 17:5, s. 551-565
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article aims to deepen the understanding of courage through a theoretical analysis of classical philosophers’ work and a review of published and unpublished empirical research on courage in nursing. The authors sought answers to questions regarding how courage is understood from a philosophical viewpoint and how it is expressed in nursing actions. Four aspects were identified as relevant to a deeper understanding of courage in nursing practice: courage as an ontological concept, a moral virtue, a property of an ethical act, and a creative capacity. The literature review shed light on the complexity of the concept of courage and revealed some lack of clarity in its use. Consequently, if courage is to be used consciously to influence nurses’ ethical actions it seems important to recognize its specific features. The results suggest it is imperative to foster courage among nurses and student nurses to prepare them for ethical, creative action and further the development of professional nursing practices.

  • Exploring student nurses' reflections on moral responsibility in practice
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Reflective Practice. - 1462-3943 .- 1470-1103. ; 9:4, s. 437-448
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Student nurses are faced with a demand for moral responsibility during their clinical education. In order to gain an understanding of how they reflect on the phenomenon of moral responsibility in nursing practice, repeated focus group interviews were conducted. Fourteen student nurses in their final year of the three year baccalaureate programme in nursing were interviewed during their final placement. The interpretive content analysis disclosed the manifestations of moral responsibility as being available for the patient, shielding the patient and being confronted with the voice of conscience. The findings highlighted the importance of space given to ethical reflection on a regular basis as a joint activity. This included by both student nurses and professionals.

  • Moral responsibility : a relational way of being
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Nursing Ethics. - 0969-7330 .- 1477-0989. - 0969-7330 ; 14:2, s. 129-140
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article reports a study exploring the meaning of the complex phenomenon of moral responsibility in nursing practice. Each of three focus groups with a total of 14 student nurses were conducted twice to gather their views on moral responsibility in nursing practice. The data were analysed by qualitative thematic content analysis. Moral responsibility was interpreted as a relational way of being, which involved guidance by one's inner compass composed of ideals, values and knowledge that translate into a striving to do good. It was concluded that, if student nurses are to continue striving to do good in a way that respects themselves and other people, it is important that they do not feel forced to compromise their values. Instead they should be given space and encouragement in their endeavours to do good in a relational way that advances nursing as a moral practice.

  • Nurses' moral strength : a hermeneutic inquiry in nursing practice
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Journal of Advanced Nursing. - 0309-2402 .- 1365-2648. ; 65:9, s. 1882-1890
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Aim. This paper is a report of a study to interpret nurses' experiences of moral strength in practice. Background. Moral strength is said to be beneficial in providing nursing care for patients, thereby contributing to high qualitative care. However, few studies focus on the meaning of nurses' moral strength. Methods. This study included eight Registered Nurses working in different aspects of health care in southern Sweden. Individual interviews were conducted in 2006 and 2007. We recorded, transcribed verbatim, and interpreted the interviews by a method grounded in hermeneutics. Findings. Three themes were interpreted on three different levels: the action level as 'having courage to act on one's convictions', the relational level as 'being attentive and recognizing vulnerability', and the existential level as 'facing the unpredictable'. Overall, moral strength was understood as a driving force to be someone special in the care of patients, i.e. someone who makes a difference. Conclusion. The value of nurses' moral strength in patient care should be recognized. Attention must be given to aspects outside the individual, e.g. professional and institutional processes that influence the work environment. Clinical team supervision can help make such processes visible and supportive.
