  • Heterologous overexpression of a monotopic glucosyltransferase (MGS) induces fatty acid remodeling in Escherichia coli membranes :
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Biochimica et Biophysica Acta - Biomembranes. - : Elsevier BV. - 0005-2736 .- 1879-2642. ; 1838:7, s. 1862-1870
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The membrane protein monoglucosyldiacylglycerol synthase (MGS) from Acholeplasma laidlawii is responsible for the creation of intracellular membranes when overexpressed in Escherichia coli (E. coli). The present study investigates time dependent changes in composition and properties of E. coli membranes during 22 h of MGS induction. The lipid/protein ratio increased by 38% in MGS-expressing cells compared to control cells. Time-dependent screening of lipids during this period indicated differences in fatty acid modeling. (1) Unsaturation levels remained constant for MGS cells (~ 62%) but significantly decreased in control cells (from 61% to 36%). (2) Cyclopropanated fatty acid content was lower in MGS producing cells while control cells had an increased cyclopropanation activity. Among all lipids, phosphatidylethanolamine (PE) was detected to be the most affected species in terms of cyclopropanation. Higher levels of unsaturation, lowered cyclopropanation levels and decreased transcription of the gene for cyclopropane fatty acid synthase (CFA) all indicate the tendency of the MGS protein to force E. coli membranes to alter its usual fatty acid composition.

  • Indoor Thermal Climate Criteria and the Effects on the Overall Environmental Performance of Air-conditioning Systems
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of EPIC 2006 AIVC. Technologies & Sustainable Policies for a Radical Decrease of the Energy Consumtion in Buildings.. - 2868341225 ; 1, s. 167-172
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The cooling loads of an office building vary with the desired indoor thermal climate. However, there is a lack of knowledge on how significantly the various indoor climate criteria affects the overall environment performance of the air-conditioning systems. Here, we analyze the environmental consequences of the energy use, as well as the possible midifications of the system design and corresponding use of materials. The analysis is based on a theoretical case study of an air-conditioning system designed for a typical office building situated in Sweden. The environmental performance is evaluated by a life cycle assessment (LCA) method, taking into account the production, the user, and the disposal stages of the life cycle. For the same building, several scenarios of the user stage corresponding with the different requirements on the indoor thermal climate in the building are studied. We conclude that requirements on the indoor climate should be established at appropriate levels, taking into account the environmental performance of the air-conditioning system.

  • Outsidership vs insidership – internationalization of health-care SMEs
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Journal of business & industrial marketing. - : Emerald Group Publishing Limited. - 0885-8624 .- 2052-1189. ; 36:11, s. 2025-2036
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose: The paper aims to explore how small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the health-care sector overcome the liability of being an outsider, instead of gaining a position as an insider in new networks in markets abroad and subsequently internationalizing. The following research questions are posed: How do firms in complex health-care markets build network relationships? How is business market knowledge developed and legitimacy acquired to overcome the liability of outsidership?Design/methodology/approach: The paper uses a multiple-case methodology in a nested case study of health-care SMEs, which allows for in-depth study of the importance of network relationships, business market knowledge development and legitimacy building to enter a target market; the study maps the activities and different actor roles as the entry process unfolds. The study draws on empirical evidence from 13 companies as well as industry and interest organizations.Findings: The results provide support for process-based explanations of how, but also of why the internationalization of health-care SMEs takes place in distinctive sequential phases, where it is necessary to complete one phase before it is possible to embark on the next. The study answers the calls for more empirical studies capturing how firms actively enter networks to overcome the liability of outsidership, become insiders and subsequently internationalize.Originality/value: The principal contribution of the authors’ study is to add to the body of research on internationalization and advance the understanding of how to build an insidership position in relevant networks by overcoming the liability of outsidership. By choosing to study firms in the health-care sector, the authors also contribute to the limited research on firms entering markets characterized by a high level of complexity.
