  • Split-line design for given geometry and location schemes
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Journal of engineering design (Print). - : Informa UK Limited. - 0954-4828 .- 1466-1837. ; 18:4, s. 373-388
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The spatial relations between parts in an assembly can be critical for the functional and aesthetic quality of a product. In the case of the automobile, these relations can be between doors, fenders, hood, panels, and so on. Variation in these relations, caused by part and assembly variation, influences the output variation, which is what the customer sees and judges. This paper presents a computer-aided tolerancing tool that supports and improves split-line design with respect to geometrical variation. A split-line is the relation between two mating parts over a distance. The design and placement of a split-line in an automobile body are influenced by several aspects such as design language, geometrical dimensioning, crash safety, and so on. In this paper only the geometrical dimensioning aspects have been considered. The research has been carried out using simulations and analyses in a computer-aided tolerancing software. The tool presented describes a way to calculate and visualize the geometrically most robust area and split-line between two parts. The findings from the research show that it is difficult to calculate and visualize the result in flush and gap directions in the same way. The tool gives insight into how the configuration of the locating schemes influences the geometrical robustness of the design.

  • Smoking and risk for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis : analysis of the EPIC cohort
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Annals of Neurology. - New York : J. Wiley & Sons. - 0364-5134 .- 1531-8249. ; 65:4, s. 378-385
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Objective: Cigarette smoking has been reported as "probable" risk factor for Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), a poorly understood disease in terms of aetiology. The extensive longitudinal data of the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC) were used to evaluate age-specific mortality rates from ALS and the role of cigarette smoking on the risk of dying from ALS. Methods: A total of 517,890 healthy subjects were included, resulting in 4,591,325 person-years. ALS cases were ascertained through death certificates. Cox hazard models were built to investigate the role of smoking on the risk of ALS, using packs/years and smoking duration to study dose-response. Results: A total of 118 subjects died from ALS, resulting in a crude mortality rate of 2.69 per 100,000/year. Current smokers at recruitment had an almost two-fold increased risk of dying from ALS compared to never smokers (HR = 1.89, 95% C.I. 1.14-3.14), while former smokers at the time of enrollment had a 50% increased risk (HR = 1.48, 95% C.I. 0.94-2.32). The number of years spent smoking increased the risk of ALS (p for trend = 0.002). Those who smoked more than 33 years had more than a two-fold increased risk of ALS compared with never smokers (HR = 2.16, 95% C.I. 1.33-3.53). Conversely, the number of years since quitting smoking was associated with a decreased risk of ALS compared with continuing smoking. Interpretation: These results strongly support the hypothesis of a role of cigarette smoking in aetiology of ALS. We hypothesize that this could occur through lipid peroxidation via formaldehyde exposure.

  • Geometrical Variation Mode Effect Analysis (GVMEA) for Split Lines
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Procedia CIRP. - : Elsevier BV. - 2212-8271. ; 92, s. 94-99
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The visual quality is a large contributor to the over-all quality impression of a product. For a complex, assembled product the visual quality is often judged by the geometrical quality in its split lines, where parallel split lines with small gaps and no flush usually are the desirable outcome. The gap, flush and parallelism in the split lines are affected by the variation on part level, variation in the joining process and the design concept itself. The visual sensitivity of a split line is also important in this context, e.g. if a split line is hidden, its visual quality is not important. In this paper, the ideas from traditional failure mode effect analysis (FMEA) are adapted to a geometry assurance context, where the visual impression of split lines is in focus. The visual sensitivity, as well as the probability of non-nominal outcomes, are included in the analysis. The probabilities of non-nominal outcomes are calculated using advanced non-rigid variation simulation based on Monte Carlo simulation combined with finite element analysis. In this way, all forces and bending due to joining and non-nominal geometries can be included. The goal of the suggested geometrical variation mode effect analysis (GVMEA) is to rank the split lines from the most critical one to the least critical one for the visual quality of a product. This is done by calculating a risk priority number for each split line. In this way, the split lines with the highest risk to impair the visual quality of a product can be identified and hopefully fixed. The method is demonstrated on a ready-to-assemble chest, i.e. on an example from the furniture industry.

  • Non-Rigid Variation Simulation for Ready-to-Assemble Furniture
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: ASME International Mechanical Engineering Congress and Exposition, Proceedings (IMECE). ; 2B-2019
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Ready-To-Assemble (RTA) furniture is becoming increasingly popular due to attractive pricing compared to standard furniture. However, for this kind of furniture to be attractive to the customer, the assembly process must be smooth. If the assembly requirements are fulfilled or not is, for this kind of assembly, ruled by the tolerances on part level. In this paper, a methodology for variation simulation of RTA furniture is presented. By predicting the fulfillment of requirement on assembly level, reasonable tolerances on part level can iteratively be set, to guarantee a smooth assembly process. The methodology includes material models, flexibility and bending during assembly, contact modeling and modeling of fastener elements between parts. Variation simulation is commonly used in the automotive industry and a comparison of variation simulation methodologies between the two kinds of industries is conducted. A major difference between RTA furniture business and automotive industry is that no fixtures are used for RTA furniture. This must be reflected in the simulation procedure. Furthermore, the results from the variation simulation need to be evaluated, and the results are dependent on the context of the assembled product. Both the assemblability and esthetical requirements, like flush, gap, and parallelism, need to be evaluated. The methodology is illustrated on a case study and future development and research needed to adapt variation simulation to furniture industry are discussed.

  • Welding of non-nominal geometries : physical tests
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Procedia CIRP. - : Elsevier BV. - 2212-8271 .- 2212-8271. ; 43, s. 136-141
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The geometrical quality of a welded assembly is to some extent depending part positions before welding. Here, a design of experiment is set up in order to investigate this relation using physical tests in a controlled environment. Based on the experimental results it can be concluded that the influence of part position before welding is significant for geometrical deviation after welding. Furthermore, a working procedure for a completely virtual geometry assurance process for welded assemblies is outlined. In this process, part variations, assembly fixture variations and welding induced variations are important inputs when predicting the capability of the final assembly.
