- This article explores the syntactic properties of pivot utterances in Swedish, i.e. utterances where one constituent is shared between two clauses. Previous research has primarily investigated the communicative functions of pivot utterances, leaving grammar aside. Pivot utterances are produced incrementally as three units, pre-pivot – pivot – post-pivot. These units are syntactically and prosodically integrated into one another in such a way that the pre-pivot and the pivot form the first clause, while the pivot and the post-pivot form the second clause. In addition to the syntactic aspects, prosodic and interactional aspects of utterance production are taken into account. The analysis of more than 200 spontaneously produced utterances shows that the construction makes use of the fact that Swedish is a verb second language with an open prefield. The pivot is the final constituent of the first clause which is then reconstructed as the prefield of the second clause. In most cases, the pivot’s syntactic function is the same in both clauses (e.g. adverbial or object), but the pivot can also be reconstructed as subject in the second clause. The analysis also identifies several types of pivoids, i.e. utterances that resemble pivot utterances but where the final unit does not meet the criteria for being analysed as a post-pivot. Among these are the dialogic grammatical constructions topic drop and nexus add-ons.

- Den här texten handlar om några grundläggande fenomen i samtalsspråket som vi benämner responsivitet, inkrementering och dynamisk förändring on-line. Vi visar att yttranden är responsivt relaterade till situationer och föregående samtalsbidrag, att de ofta produceras inkrementellt, dvs. bit för bit, och att de har en dynamisk syntax. Med detta menar vi att deras grammatiska uppbyggnad ibland ändras eller modifieras under loppet av själva produktionen, så att slutresultatet ibland delvis kommer att avvika från vad inledningen kan ha signalerat. Vi betraktar dessa tre fenomen som yttrandenas produktionsvillkor och betonar också samspelet mellan dem.

- Over a long professional lifetime, Ragnar Rommetveit contributed to numerous disciplines in the social sciences and humanities, reflecting discussions in global social science and his own unending quest to understand social and individual life. His remarkable career and impact can be outlined in terms of four main phases. The first involved general social psychology in the 1950s and was reflected in Social Norms and Roles (1953/1955). In the second phase during the 1960s and 1970s, he focused on language-related psycholinguistic research leading to publications such as his 1968 volume Words, Meanings and Messages. The third phase came in the 1970s and 1980s and was motivated by his critique of formal linguistics and resulted in his short, magisterial 1974 volume On Message Structure. The fourth phase between 1980 and 2010 focused on "dialogism," giving rise to works such as his 1992 article "Outlines of a dialogically based social-cognitive approach to human cognition and communication." Along with his intellectual accomplishments, Rommetveits brilliance and generosity inspired students and colleagues at the University of Oslo, as well as from around the world. His capacity to engage with others in unending mediations on communication and mental life ranks among his most important legacies.
