  • The cancer genome atlas pan-cancer analysis project
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Nature Genetics. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1546-1718 .- 1061-4036. ; 45:10, s. 1113-1120
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) Research Network has profiled and analyzed large numbers of human tumors to discover molecular aberrations at the DNA, RNA, protein and epigenetic levels. The resulting rich data provide a major opportunity to develop an integrated picture of commonalities, differences and emergent themes across tumor lineages. The Pan-Cancer initiative compares the first 12 tumor types profiled by TCGA. Analysis of the molecular aberrations and their functional roles across tumor types will teach us how to extend therapies effective in one cancer type to others with a similar genomic profile. © 2013 Nature America, Inc. • Circulating fatty acids and risk of gestational diabetes mellitus : prospective analyses in China
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: European Journal of Endocrinology. - : Bioscientifica. - 0804-4643 .- 1479-683X. ; 185:1, s. 87-97
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Objective: We aimed to examine prospective associations between circulating fatty acids in early pregnancy and incident gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) among Chinese pregnant women. Methods: Analyses were based on two prospective nested case-control studies conducted in western China (336 GDM cases and 672 matched controls) and central China (305 cases and 305 matched controls). Fasting plasma fatty acids in early pregnancy (gestational age at enrollment: 10.4 weeks(s.d., 2.0)) and 13.2 weeks (1.0), respectively) were determined by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, and GDM was diagnosed based on the International Association of Diabetes in Pregnancy Study Groups criteria during 24-28 weeks of gestation. Multiple metabolic biomarkers (HOMA-IR (homeostatic model assessment for insulin resistance), HbA1c, c-peptide, high-sensitivity C-reactive protein, adiponectin, leptin, and blood lipids) were additionally measured among 672 non-GDM controls at enrollment. Results: Higher levels of saturated fatty acids (SFAs) 14:0 (pooled odds ratio, 1.41 for each 1-s.d. increase; 95% CI: 1.25, 1.59) and 16:0 (1.19; 1.05, 1.35) were associated with higher odds of GDM. Higher levels of n-6 polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) 18:2n-6 were strongly associated with lower odds of GDM (0.69; 0.60, 0.80). In non-GDM pregnant women, higher SFAs 14:0 and 16:0 but lower n-6 PUFA 18:2n-6 were generally correlated with unfavorable metabolic profiles. Conclusions: We documented adverse associations of 14:0 and 16:0 but a protective association of 18:2n-6 with GDM among Chinese pregnant women. Our findings highlight the distinct roles of specific fatty acids in the onset of GDM.

  • Room-temperature broadband quasistatic magnetic cloak
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: NPG ASIA MATERIALS. - : Nature Publishing Group. - 1884-4049 .- 1884-4057. ; 9
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In the past decade, invisible cloaks have experienced rapid research development in the metamaterial community driven by their revolutionary practical potentials. Among them, magnetic cloaks, which are able to conceal metallic or magnetic objects from electromagnetic induction detection, have attracted a great amount of attention. However, applications of these reported devices are limited by their low-temperature environment requirement because of the involvement of superconductors to acquire the perfect diamagnetic response. In this work, we remove this temperature hurdle by fully taking the diamagnetic features of usual metals and demonstrate a three-dimensional room temperature quasistatic magnetic cloak using a ferromagnetic metallic bilayer structure. Experimentally, our device exhibits a prominent cloaking effect in a wide frequency range from 5 to 250 kHz with a maximum field disturbance ratio < 0.5%. The practical potential is verified through a commercial handheld metal probe working at 25 kHz. Our results unambiguously show that an invisible cloak may be realized in the low-frequency region for scenarios where screening an external magnetic field without disturbance is specifically demanded.

  • Acoustic Illusion Using Materials with Isotropic and Positive Parameters
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Applied. - : American Physical Society. - 2331-7019. ; 10:6
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Acoustic illusion devices are usually designed using transformation optics. An alternate method is proposed to achieve acoustic illusions without external devices by elaborately manipulating the acoustic scattering potential of an object. The proposed method is more of a "cosmetic operation" for an object, which modifies the scattered acoustic pressure distribution of the object to mimic another object by exchanging their scattering potentials in two symmetrical areas in the wave vector domain. The advantage of this method is the simplicity of material parameters: only positive isotropic mass density and bulk modulus are required, which is impossible with the conventional method of using transformation optics due to the complex material requirements (anisotropic and negative index parameters).

  • An efficient plate heater with uniform surface temperature engineered with effective thermal materials
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Optics Express. - 1094-4087. ; 22:14, s. 17006-17015
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Extended from its electromagnetic counterpart, transformation thermodynamics applied to thermal conduction equations can map a virtual geometry into a physical thermal medium, realizing the manipulation of heat flux with almost arbitrarily desired diffusion paths, which provides unprecedented opportunities to create thermal devices unconceivable or deemed impossible before. In this work we employ this technique to design an efficient plate heater that can transiently achieve a large surface of uniform temperature powered by a small thermal source. As opposed to the traditional approach of relying on the deployment of a resistor network, our approach fully takes advantage of an advanced functional material system to guide the heat flux to achieve the desired temperature heating profile. A different set of material parameters for the transformed device has been developed, offering the parametric freedom for practical applications. As a proof of concept, the proposed devices are implemented with engineered thermal materials and show desired heating behaviors consistent with numerical simulations. Unique applications for these devices can be envisioned where stringent temperature uniformity and a compact heat source are both demanded.

  • Broadband Electromagnetic Wave Tunneling with Transmuted Material Singularity
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Letters. - : American Physical Society (APS). - 0031-9007 .- 1079-7114. ; 125:20
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Subwavelength channels filled with near-zero-index (NZI) media can realize extraordinary optical functionalities, for example, tunneling electromagnetic wave without reflections, but usually confined in a narrow wavelength band due to the material singularity (refractive index n approximate to 0), which seriously limits the practical potentials. In this Letter, we show this limit can be fundamentally overcome by an alternative, named near-zero-index-featured (NZIF) structure, with the singularity transmuted via a controlled optical conformal mapping, enabling the device implementation with nonmagnetic normal dielectrics (i.e., relative permittivity >1). Their equivalence is strictly examined through a subwavelength tunneling waveguide. Classic wave tunneling features in a broad frequency range are revealed in various confined geometries. These properties are robust against the disturbance of several kinds of structural defects benefited from the infinite effective local wavelength. The broadband and lossless NZIF medium proposed here provides a promising way to pursue the fascinating light controlling functionalities as initially enabled by singular NZI materials.

  • Controlling the plasmonic surface waves of metallic nanowires by transformation optics
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Applied Physics Letters. - : AIP Publishing. - 0003-6951 .- 1077-3118. ; 107:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this letter, we introduce the technique of using transformation optics to manipulate the mode states of surface plasmonic waves of metallic nanowire waveguides. As examples we apply this technique to design two optical components: a three-dimensional (3D) electromagnetic mode rotator and a mode convertor. The rotator can rotate the polarization state of the surface wave around plasmonic nanowires by arbitrarily desired angles, and the convertor can transform the surface wave modes from one to another. Full-wave simulation is performed to verify the design and efficiency of our devices. Their potential application in photonic circuits is envisioned.

  • Fast Adaptive Thermal Buffering by a Passive Open Shell Based on Transformation Thermodynamics
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Advanced Theory and Simulations. - : Wiley. - 2513-0390. ; 1:7
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • By using transformation thermodynamics, an open, adaptive thermal buffer shell (TBS) is designed and experimentally implemented with natural materials (layered copper and expanded polystyrene [EPS]). The TBS can store excessive heat flux quickly in the shell and release it slowly when it is needed, which also has some distinctive features: first it is a buffer shell that can avoid external extremes in temperature (either high or low) and also provide a relatively stable temperature for the interior of the shell when the temperature outside the shell has some fluctuations; second the TBS is not thermally insulated (with holes connected to the outside world) and the buffering effect of the TBS originates from the heat recycling mechanics, not thermal insulation; third the TBS has a short response time and the temperature inside the shell can be quickly adjusted according to the average temperature outside the shell; fourth the TBS is a passive device. Unlike traditional air conditioning, the TBS can work without an external power supply. The TBS will have many applications in energy recycling systems, smart heat controlling systems, and passive heat self-adaptation systems. Numerical simulations and experimental demonstrations are given to verify the function of the TBS.

  • Illusion Optics : Disguising with Ordinary Dielectric Materials
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Advanced Materials. - : WILEY-V C H VERLAG GMBH. - 0935-9648 .- 1521-4095. ; 31:6
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Illusion devices are usually designed using transformation optics. Here, a new method is proposed to achieve optical illusions without external devices by elaborately manipulating the scattering potential of an object. In contrast to the conventional transformation optics method, which completely replaces one object by the image of another object using complementary\restoring media and a superlens, the method described here is more of a cosmetic operation for an object, which modifies the scattering pattern of the object to mimic another object by exchanging their scattering potentials in two symmetrical areas in the wave vector domain. Only positive isotropic nonmagnetic materials are introduced in the present method, which is impossible using the conventional method because superlenses require negative-index materials. Both numerical simulations and experimental demonstrations are used to verify the performance of the illusion devices of this method.

  • Novel thermal lens for remote heating/cooling designed with transformation optics
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Optics Express. - : Novel thermal lens for remote heating/cooling designed with transformation optics. - 1094-4087. ; 24:6, s. 5683-5692
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Remote thermal focusing/refrigeration by suppressing thermal diffusion can be achieved with the help of the novel thermal lens proposed in this paper. Our thermal lens is designed using transformation optics, and has several advantages. Firstly, it is a remote controlling device, i.e. the temperature is increased or decreased only in the heat/cold source and the target points, and the temperature in the area between the source and target points is not influenced. Secondly, the heat/cold sources can move freely inside the lens, and hence the focused points outside the lens can be adjusted dynamically. Numerical simulations are given to verify the novel properties (such as thermal focusing effect, remote refrigeration and remote thermal diffusion suppressing) of the proposed device, which cannot be achieved by any other traditional method.
