  • Port logistics platform integration in supply chain management
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Shipping and Transport Logistics. - 1756-6517 .- 1756-6525. ; 1:2, s. 194-210
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The theme of this study is to present a comprehensive theoretical analysis and conceptual foundation of the port logistics platform as it relates to supply chain management discipline using a system theory approach. In this research paper, three main systems were identified: namely port logistics system, multimodal transport system and information and communication system as a constituent of the port logistics platform. Each system is associated with a specific type of flow, and these systems are closely interrelated. In the meantime, supply chain management and port logistics platform are the main entities governing the port logistics integration processes. The result of the research shows that the port might be a functional element within the supply chains through adapting the system theory approach, in particular soft system methodology. In addition, the proposed framework in relation to the value migration construct provides a better understanding of the contemporary port logistics platform set-up and interrelationship. The theoretical and practical implications of this emerging phenomenon are also discussed in this study.

  • Significant Value-added attributes in Port Supply Chain Systems
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: 14th Int. Symposium on Logistics (14thISL) 09, 5-7. July, Istanbul, Turkey.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose – The theme of this study is to identify relevant value-added attributes in port supplychain systems, specifying significant value-added attributes disclosed from different domainperspectives.Design/methodology/approach – To prepare this paper, literature sourcing to identify relevantvalue-added attributes formed the foundation of this research work. On this basis, the Delphitechnique was implemented to rank the identified value-added attributes from experts‘ opinions, and more importantly, to categorize the large number of these attributes in order to makeavailable use of the Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP). This was followed by pair-wisecomparison to determine the significant value-added attributes from the port key managerperspective. The data collected for pair-wise comparison is conducted through semi-structureinterviews in order to explain the presumed methodology and to eliminate potential bias.Finding – The result from the cross-domain synthesis shows that "information communicationvalue" is the most valuable attribute revealed by both Delphi experts and the port decisionmaker, among other main constructs of attributes. Other important agreements among expertsand port key management indicate that "access to distribution network," "logistics andtransport integral facility" and "reliable custom clearance services" are the most rewardingvalue-added attributes among others in the same category. The study presents a framework forcategorization of the identified value-added attributes and proposes a model for ranking andprioritization purposes.Practical implications – The study identifies and categorizes the value-added attributes relatedto the port supply chain systems. The applied methodology might enhance port key managementto discover the most rewarding value-added attributes and value relevance as a source ofcompetitive advantage.Originality/value – This paper combines both literature analysis and interviews of both expertsand decision makers, which offers an integrated model for ranking and prioritization purposes. Itis assumed to add value to the port logistics and supply chain literature by identifying andcategorizing an important set of value-added attributes. The study attempts to compromisedifferent methods in order to reveal various respondents‘ perspectives. Keywords – Competitive advantages; Decision making; Logistics; Port; Supply chain systemsPaper Type – Research paper

  • Ports hinterland connections: the case of rail shuttles
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: 4th International Congress on Maritime Technological Innovations and Research. Barcelona 2004. - 8476538618
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper focus on the use of rail shuttles in the transportation of unitised goods between ports and their hinterland. Trends as containerisation, overall growth of transportation, congested infrastructure combined with consolidation and vertical integration on the transport market indicate the growing importance and interest in hinterland transports. At the same time do ports around the world experience difficulties in fulfilling customer requirements and demands of society in general with regard to hinterland transit. It is primarily the dominating mode of hinterland transport, road, that has problem coping with increasing volumes at the same time as rail historically has not been able to meet up to market demands.

  • Coordinating new product development and supply chain management
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Value Chain Management. - : InderScience Publishers. - 1741-5357 .- 1741-5365. ; 4:1/2, s. 170-192
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Effective implementation of the new product development (NPD) process not only enables management to coordinate the efficient flow of new products, but will also assist to support ramp-up of various supply chain activities and other related activities supporting the commercialisation of the product. Thus, companies need to address all these issues in parallel to be successful and this requires some kind of integrative product development approach. The purpose of this research is to increase the understanding of how NPD is connected to supply chain management (SCM) by investigating how the NPD process is structured and executed in two international manufacturing companies seeking to realise an innovative, predictable and efficient product development. Several essential linkages between NPD and SCM have been derived from case study findings concerning important issues for successful product development.
