Crafting Lutheran Pastors in Tanzania : Perceptions of Theological Education and Formation in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Tanzania

- The quest for theological education is embedded in the history of the churches in sub-Saharan Africa and is, at the same time, inherently linked to how the churches continue to evolve and shift in character over time. It relates to the self-understanding of the churches and their role in society, including their academic and pastoral obligations to adequately educate and train leaders to work in the localities. With its estimated 6.5 million members, the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Tanzania (ELCT) is today one of the largest Lutheran churches in the world. The role and impact of institutions for theological education are high on the agenda in the ELCT, not least as the various educational institutions for ministerial training are often seen as important means in the processes of theologising and strategising for the future.This qualitative study draws heavily upon interviews with Lutheran bishops and theological educators in Tanzania, and identifies leading motives and ideas behind their current engagements in the field of ministerial studies. More specifically, it shows how the informants reflect upon, argue about and negotiate their perceptions of higher theological education. It demonstrates by what means, techniques, and practices they claim to govern, guide, and form the students in theology. Formal ministerial studies are not carried out in a vacuum but in and through certain institutions, appropriately designed to serve their purposes. In order to gain academic accreditation, institutional and theological recognition, and to oversee the processes of quality assurance, the ELCT cultivates its links with relevant actors and institutions in Tanzanian society. Even the global networks and connections, such as other churches and missionary organisations abroad, play a significant role in this regard.Drawing inspiration from governmentality studies and the notion of governmentality, this study focuses on ‘how’ questions; it examines how the interviewees think about governing, and how they calculate, strategise, or respond to certain problems linked to the multiple forms and models of theological training. As such, the study focuses on how government operates, and examines what claims, hopes, and visions the informants have in mind when educating a new generation of clergy in a rapidly changing society.

A Culture for the Christian Commonwealth : Antonio Possevino, Authority, History, and the Venetian Interdict

- In this study, I investigate the authorial intentions of the early modern Jesuit Antonio Possevino (1533–1611) aiming to contribute to the understanding of his activities as an author, diplomatic administrator and missionary. I carry out analyses of his evaluative criteria of various topics and disciplines, such as history, geography, and politics. I also problematise earlier research on the Venetian Interdict Controversy of 1606 and 1607, in which he participated. Main sources to the investigation are the Apparato All’Historia and the Coltura Degl’Ingegni which were initially included in the bibliography Bibliotheca Selecta, as well as the Soldato Christiano. These sources are compared with three pamphlets written during the Interdict Controversy: the Nuova Risposta di Giovanni Filoteo d’Asti, Risposta di Teodoro Eugenio di Famagosta, and Risposta del Sig. Paolo Anafesto. My point of departure for the textual interpretation, are the transcriptions of the sources that I have produced. The methodology of interpretation borrows from Quentin Skinner’s hermeneutics of recovering authorial intentions, without succumbing to a narrow contextualist view. I have complemented Skinner’s approach with the concept of historicity, which accepts person to be able to relate to one’s historical context without being locked inside it. In the analysis, I use concepts to make the implicit meanings of the texts explicit. The framework for Possevino’s texts concerns deliberative rhetoric, which aims either to exhort or dissuade readers to imitate given historical exempla. In his task of persuasion, emphasis is put on the moral dimensions of the transcendentals (bonum, unum, and verum). The transcendentals also function as his evaluative criteria.Important to the analysis is the concept of traditions. The point of departure for the use of this concept is Alasdair MacIntyre’s definition of tradition as a community with a shared ability to refer to canonical texts, which also shares the understanding of justice, authority, and sovereignty. In my analysis, I show that conflict arose between two rival traditions, one Roman and one Venetian, during the Interdict Controversy. The first part of this study function as foundation for understanding the content that Possevino produced during the Interdict Controversy. Here, I discuss biographical notes about Possevino, as well as characteristics of the early modern Society of Jesus. In the second part, I investigate Possevino’s definition of culture, his evaluation of disciplines, and his use of the principle of accommodation. In the third part, I provide a survey of the early modern Republic of Venice, as well as an analysis of the debates about authority during the Interdict Controversy. In closing, the results of my investigation show that Possevino’s intentions consist of contributions to the common good, which add to a cohesive Catholic culture.

Increasing the accessibility to internet-based cognitive behavioural therapy for depression : A single-blind randomized controlled trial of condensed versus full-text versions

- Background: Research shows that internet-based cognitive behavioural therapy (iCBT) is an effective treatment for depression. However, little is known about how the length of the text material in iCBT affects outcomes. Objective: The aim of this study was to test whether a condensed iCBT version for depression would be noninferior to the existing full-text version in reducing depressive symptoms at post-treatment. We also wanted to test non-inferiority for secondary outcomes and explore reading speed and ADHD symptoms as potential moderators. Method: A single-blind randomized controlled trial was conducted (N = 267) comparing two versions of guided iCBT for depression; full-text (around 60,000 words) and condensed (around 30,000 words, with the option to listen to the text). Estimated between-group effect sizes and their confidence intervals for depression, anxiety and quality of life, were compared to a pre-determined non-inferiority margin (ES = 0.4). Moderation analyses of reading speed and ADHD symptoms were conducted. Results: The condensed version of iCBT was non-inferior to the full-text version on post-treatment measures for depressive symptoms (95 % CI = - 0.42-0.24), anxiety symptoms (95 % CI = - 0.24-0.32), and quality of life (95 % CI = - 0.09-0.49). Non-inferiority was inconclusive for depressive symptoms at the one-year follow-up (95 % CI = - 0.60-0.47). There was no significant moderation effects of reading speed (p = 0.06) or ADHD symptoms (p = 0.11) on depressive symptoms. Conclusion: These results indicate that a condensed version of iCBT for depression is as effective at treating depression as the full-text version. By shortening texts, iCBT may be made available to more people. Due to unequal dropout rates between the groups, these results are preliminary and need to be replicated.

Ataxia in Patients With Bi-Allelic NFASC Mutations and Absence of Full-Length NF186

- The etiology of hereditary ataxia syndromes is heterogeneous, and the mechanisms underlying these disorders are often unknown. Here, we utilized exome sequencing in two siblings with progressive ataxia and muscular weakness and identified a novel homozygous splice mutation (c.3020-1G > A) in neurofascin (NFASC). In RNA extracted from fibroblasts, we showed that the mutation resulted in inframe skipping of exon 26, with a deprived expression of the full-length transcript that corresponds to NFASC isoform NF186. To further investigate the disease mechanisms, we reprogrammed fibroblasts from one affected sibling to induced pluripotent stem cells, directed them to neuroepithelial stem cells and finally differentiated to neurons. In early neurogenesis, differentiating cells with selective depletion of the NF186 isoform showed significantly reduced neurite outgrowth as well as fewer emerging neurites. Furthermore, whole-cell patch-clamp recordings of patient-derived neuronal cells revealed a lower threshold for openings, indicating altered Na+ channel kinetics, suggesting a lower threshold for openings as compared to neuronal cells without the NFASC mutation. Taken together, our results suggest that loss of the full-length NFASC isoform NF186 causes perturbed neurogenesis and impaired neuronal biophysical properties resulting in a novel early-onset autosomal recessive ataxia syndrome.
