  • The Don Quixote of youth culture : media use and cultural preferences among students in Estonia and Sweden
  • 2005
  • Book (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • How should youth culture be understood in the globalised world of today? How do patterns of cultural taste develop in societies undergoing fundamental change? This book presents a comparative analysis of media use and cultural preferences among students at the University of Tartu in Estonia and at Södertörn University College in Sweden. In some respects, the patterns found in the two countries converge, in others they diverge. Explanations for this are to be found both in the present living conditions and in social norms from the past.

  • Integration of dental implants in conjunction with edta-conditioned dentin grafts: An experimental study
  • 2021
  • In: Dentistry Journal. - : MDPI AG. - 2304-6767. ; 9:6
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • This study was undertaken to investigate the integration of titanium micro-implants installed in conjunction with previously dentin-grafted areas and to study the morphological appearance, mineral content, and healing pattern of xenogenic EDTA-conditioned dentin blocks and granules grafted to cavities in the tibial bone of rabbits. Demineralized and non-demineralized dentin blocks and granules from human premolars were implanted into cavities prepared on the lateral aspects of the tibias of rabbits. After a healing period of six months, micro-implants were installed at each surgical site. Histological examinations were carried out after 24 weeks. Characterization of the EDTA-conditioned dentin blocks was performed by means of light microscopy, dental X-rays, scanning electron microscopy, and energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX). No implants were found to be integrated in direct contact with the dentin particles or blocks. On the EDTA-conditioned dentin surface, the organic marker elements C and N dominated, as revealed by EDX. The hydroxyapatite constituents Ca and P were almost absent on the dentin surface. No statistically significant difference was observed between the EDTA-conditioned and non-demineralized dentin, as revealed by BIC and BA. The bone-inductive capacity of the dentin material seemed limited, although demineralization by means of EDTA indicated higher BIC and BA values in conjunction with the installed implants in the area. A 12 h EDTA treatment did not fully decalcify the grafts, as revealed by X-ray analysis. © 2021 by the authors. Licensee MDPI, Basel, Switzerland.

  • Culture and Transmission : The Technological and Cultural Reach of International Syndicated Radio
  • 2008
  • Doctoral thesis (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • The aim of this dissertation is to study the technological and cultural reach of internationally syndicated radio from the vantage point of the radio programme Solid Steel between 2000 and 2006. Solid Steel is a weekly two-hour music show originally produced and aired in London but today also broadcast by a large number of stations around the world, as well as via the Internet. The theoretical interest of the study lies in the tension and separation between communication as transmission and communication as ritual, as distribution in space and maintenance in time. This separation produces a number of subsequent conceptual pairs; technology and culture, material and symbolic, space and time, etc. Based upon these pairs the study explores the spatial and temporal organization of Solid Steel. As a first step in the analysis the original context of production in London is studied, noticing a shift from being a local production to an international syndication, as well as from a live studio production to a pre-produced show. The stations syndicating Solid Steel are then mapped according to their geographical location as well as their organizational form. Next, the themes and values enunciated in relation to the programme are examined, both as expressed by the producers in interviews and by texts published on the programme’s website. The programme is then analysed with these values in mind, with particular focus on the temporal organization of the music played, employing the concepts of flow and changing same. This part of the analysis is carried out on two levels, first the programme structure and then the actual sequences of sounds and songs making up the music mix. The final chapter returns to the opening concerns over culture and transmission, suggesting that new forms of radio, here exemplified by Solid Steel, may help us further our understanding of time and space in relation to international media productions.

  • Implementation of usability analysis to detect problems in the management of kitesurfing equipment
  • 2011
  • In: Procedia Engineering. - Amsterdam : Elsevier. - 1877-7058. ; 13, s. 525-530
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Equipment used for high-risk sports, such as kitesurfing, needs to be efficient for the intended use and the user, and thus meet the mechanical demands and provide sufficient safety. Accidents related to kitesurfing occur, and the consequences are sometimes catastrophic. One important factor is the equipment design, which can influence the type and number of injuries due to insufficient safety systems. The aim of this study was to investigate how the design of kitesurfing equipment can affect safety issues from a usability perspective in relation to the task of preparation. A focus group of 6 subjects analyzed the task of preparing kitesurfing equipment for riding, using the evaluation methods Enhanced Cognitive Walkthrough (ECW) and Predictive Use Error Analysis (PUEA). From the evaluation, a list of plausible usability problems was identified together with proposed design guidelines. The results showed that usability problems occur during preparation. In total 35 usability problems were found, of which 11 (4 from ECW and 7 from PUEA) have a great impact on safety. These 11 problems were hard to detect for the user and could result in serious consequences for the kitesurfers during rideing. The analysis resulted in some general guidelines that are possible to implement on different types of kites. To conclude, education and improved design of the equipment are essential to increase the safety of the sport.
