    • Ammoxidation of 3-picoline was studied on reduced V-Ti-O catalysts with V6O13 as the major vanadium oxide. The results showed that the initial activity as a function of the TiO2 content reached a maximum at 50–60 mole% TiO2. It is proposed that there is maximum contact between the vanadium and titanium phases at this composition, which results in a weakening of the (VO)3+ surface bond. The selectivity of formation of nicotinonitrile exhibited a maximum of 83% at 10 mole% TiO2 and minima of 73 and 75% at 0 and 30 mole% TiO2, respectively. At higher TiO2 concentrations the selectivity increased continuously to 83% at 90 mole% TiO2. The variation of the selectivity of formation of nicotinonitrile depends on the View the MathML source ratio in the TiO2 phase. It was also found that the conversion and yields varied with the reaction time, which could be explained by the fact that reduced vanadium oxides were oxidized to V2O5 during the ammoxidation process. This oxidation leads to the formation of active and highly selective boundary surfaces between the TiO2-promoted vanadium oxides V6O13 and V2O5.

    • Ammoxidation of 3-picoline to nicotinonitrile was studied on V2O5, V6O13, and V2O4 catalysts in a fixed-bed integral reactor. The activity studies showed that V6O13 was the most active and selective catalyst of the pure oxides, with a maximum yield of 76% nicotinonitrile at 365 °C. The maximum yield on V2O5 catalyst was 34%, and was obtained at a higher temperature, 458 °C. V2O4 was found to be inactive under the conditions studied. The activities and selectivities of the oxides changed rapidly with reaction time when V6O13 and V2O4 were studied. By means of X-ray diffraction and a titrimetric method, the average oxidation number of vanadium was determined, V6O13 was both oxidized and reduced during the reaction; V2O4 was oxidized, while a relatively smaller reduction of V2O5 could be detected. The experiments showed that the V6O13 catalyst used, with both V2O5 and V6O13 phases present, was more selective than any of the pure oxides. This may be explained by active boundary surfaces. Also a mechanism of formation of nicotinonitrile is proposed, which includes a step in which an adsorbed aldehyde complex reacts with ammonia.

  • Factors associated with good self-rated health and quality of life in subjects with self-reported COPD

    • Background: Recent guidelines for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) state that COPD is both preventable and treatable. To gain a more positive outlook on the disease it is interesting to investigate factors associated with good, self-rated health and quality of life in subjects with self-reported COPD in the population. Methods: In a cross-sectional study design, postal survey questionnaires were sent to a stratified, random population in Sweden in 2004 and 2008. The prevalence of subjects (40–84 years) who reported having COPD was 2.1% in 2004 and 2.7% in 2008. Data were analyzed for 1475 subjects. Regression models were used to analyze the associations between health measures (general health status, the General Health Questionnaire, the EuroQol five-dimension questionnaire) and influencing factors. Results: The most important factor associated with good, self-rated health and quality of life was level of physical activity. Odds ratios for general health varied from 2.4 to 7.7 depending on degree of physical activity, where subjects with the highest physical activity level reported the best health and also highest quality of life. Social support and absence of economic problems almost doubled the odds ratios for better health and quality of life. Conclusions: In this population-based public health survey, better self-rated health status and quality of life in subjects with self-reported COPD was associated with higher levels of physical activity, social support, and absence of economic problems. The findings indicated that of possible factors that could be influenced, promoting physical activity and strengthening social support are important in maintaining or improving the health and quality of life in subjects with COPD. Severity of the disease as a possible confounding effect should be investigated in future population studies.

  • Solar windmagnetosphere-ionosphere coupling : an event study based on Freja data

    • Freja data are used to study the relative contributions from the high-latitude (reconnection/direct entry) and low-latitude (viscous interaction) dynamos to the cross-polar potential drop. Convection streamlines which are connected to the high-latitude dynamo may be identified from dispersed magnetosheath ions not only in the cusp/cleft region itself but also several degrees poleward of it. This fact, together with Freja's orbital geometry allows us to infer the potential drop from the high-latitude dynamo as well as to obtain a lower limit to the potential drop from the low-latitude dynamo for dayside Freja passes. All cases studied here are for active magnetospheric conditions. The Freja data suggest that under these conditions at least one third of the potential is generated in the low-latitude dynamo. These observations are consistent with earlier observations of the potential across the low-latitude boundary layer if we assume that the low-latitude dynamo region extends over several tens of Earth radii in the antisunward direction along the tail flanks, and that the majority of the potential drop derives from the sun-aligned component of the electric field rather than from its cross-boundary component, or equivalently, that the centre of the dynamo region is located quite far down tail. A possible dynamo geometry is illustrated.

  • Pontoon trap for salmon and trout equipped with a seal exclusion device catches larger salmons

    • The growing seal populations of the Baltic have led to more frequent interactions with coastal fisheries. The motivation for seals to interact with fishing gear is high. It provides high densities of fish. A successful means of mitigating the conflict is the pontoon trap. Seal visits here have been frequent. Seals have access to most parts of the trap system including the middle chamber, which is an overhead environment. Concerns have been raised about seals possible entanglement in this specific part of the trap. As a means of keeping seals from entering the middle chamber, two different Seal Exclusion Devices (SEDs) were tested. A diamond mesh SED and a square mesh SED, which was rotated 45. The aim was to compare the functionality of the different SEDs with respect to seal deterrent abilities and catch composition. The hypothesis tested were (i) that seals would not be able to enter the middle chamber, (ii) that the catch would increase and (iii) that the SED would deter larger fish from swimming into the middle chamber. Catch data and underwater film were collected. Larger salmons were caught in traps equipped with SEDs. The SEDs did not affect the number of caught fish or the total catch per soak day. © 2018 Calamnius et al.     • Fault detection of electrical machines can avoid unplanned outage of the electricity generation at a power plant. Research related to a different type of faults in the synchronous generator, the broken damper bar (BDB) fault attracts less attention due to the low statistical population. However, a comprehensive condition monitoring system requires a method to diagnose this few in number faults also. Detection of BDB fault is difficult since damper bars are active only during a transient period, which could be start-up intervals or as a reaction to power system dynamics. In this paper, the BDB fault is detected during the machine start-up. The Radius of Gyration (RG) was introduced using a time series data mining (TSDM) approach that was applied to induced electromotive force of the rotor field winding due to BDB fault. Location and number of BDBs effect on the nominated feature are also studied.

    • In the present study, we introduce a novel method for in vivo imaging of the biodistribution of single wall carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) labeled with recombinant thermo-stable Luciola cruciata luciferase (LcL). In addition, we highlight a new application for green fluorescent proteins in which they are utilized as imaging moieties for SWNTs. Carbon nanotubes show great positive potential compared to other drug nanocarriers with respect to loading capacity, cell internalization, and biodegradability. We have also studied the effect of binding mode (chemical conjugation and physical adsorption) on the chemiluminescence activity, decay rate, and half-life. We have shown that through proper chemical conjugation of LcL to CNTs, LcL remained biologically active for the catalysis of D-luciferin in the presence of ATP to release detectable amounts of photons for in vivo imaging. Chemiluminescence of LcL allows imaging of CNTs and their cargo in nonsuperficial locations at an organ resolution with no need of an excitation source. Loading LcL-CNTs with the antitumor antibiotic doxorubicin did not alter their biological activity for imaging. In vivo imaging of LcL-CNTs has been carried out using "IVIS spectrum" showing the uptake of LcL-CNTs by different organs in mice. We believe that the LcL-CNT system is an advanced powerful tool for in vivo imaging and therefore a step toward the advancement of the nanomellicine field.
