  • Mangling the process : a meta-theoretical account of process theorizing
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Qualitative Research. - : SAGE Publications. - 1468-7941 .- 1741-3109. ; 15:1, s. 85-104
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Process approaches are increasingly applied in qualitative studies in many fields within social sciences.Yet, few studies have seriously elaborated on the ontological premises of process theorizing. This study addresses this void by suggesting a process philosophical framework. The frameworkis ontologically grounded with the concepts of causality, spatiality, and temporality in processtheorizing. We use these tenets for developing three process theorizing techniques – articulating, relating, and conjugating. Articulating denotes to effectively expressing the potential identifying andgenerative properties of the process. Relating is the technique by which one maintains continuousconnections within and between reified properties of a process. Conjugating is the technique bywhich a process’ identifying and generative properties are pulled together from various temporaland spatial sites in order to form a novel nexus. Each of these techniques builds on processphilosophy and process theory and is illustrated through examples from prior process studies.

  • Introducing the multi-spatial study : Taking process ontology seriously in organization studies
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 22nd Nordic Academy of Management Conference (NFF) 21-23 August, 2013, Reykjavik, Iceland.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This research note argues for a new method in organization studies: the multi-spatial study. Intended as a way to take the call for new methods in a fluid world seriously (Law, 2004), the multi-spatial study is a way of taking process ontology seriously by studying multiple trajectories (Massey, 2005). Methodologically, the multi-spatial study may be described as the involvement of a large number of researchers who study an organizational phenomenon from various perspectives at different places, but at the same point in time. By focusing the research efforts into a single point in time, directing attention to everything that happens in relation to the organization/al phenomenon/, a deeper understanding may be developed of how various trajectories that take form at the same time but at different physical places are related. This paper describes the rationale for the multi-spatial study as an alternative to the traditional, representational and linear ways of studying organization.

  • 2-loop Action Research
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This paper outlines a general 2-loop model of action research in order to account for two important facets of action research that traditional cycle models do not explicitly account for. One facet concerns the interplay between the processes of action research (ie diagnosing, action planning, acting, evaluating, and learning) on one hand, and their conceptual outcomes (ie the perceived real world situation, the theoretical understanding, and the observed organizational response) on the other. The second facet concerns the dynamic exchange of knowledge between the world theory and the world of practice. Both types of knowledge are necessary, but none of them are sufficient to shape the result of an action research project. We argue that the dialectic between these two worlds manifests itself in a certain point which we call “the moment of truth”, where the theoretical understanding is challenged by practical facts, and where practice is scrutinized by theoretical knowledge. We believe that by acknowledging these facets, it is possible to enhance the quality of action research.

  • An event-based approach for the “intermediate step” in process studies of IT-related organizational change
  • Ingår i: Systems, Signs and Actions. - 1652-8719. ; 5:1, s. 84-99
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In order to understand and explain IT-related organizational change, information systems researchers have adopted several practice-oriented theories from sociology, and science and technology studies. These “grand theories” are often complex and operate on a high level of abstraction, thus, making them suitable for collecting rich process data while following multifaceted empirical phenomena over time. As a consequence, it may be challenging to organize and analyse the abundant process data in order to create a foundation for theory building, while also being loyal to the “grand theory” as well as to the logic of process research. The purpose of this paper is to propose a systematic approach in order to facilitate this “intermediate step” of sensemaking between data collection and theory building. The suggested approach comprises three interrelated and iterative processes for organizing and analysing process data in order to build a foundation for theorizing: process data are chronologically organized and a thick case history is written; the case history is interpreted as a narrative informed by the “grand theory” and coded as events; chains of events are bracketed together and graphically represented in terms of episodes, separated by critical events that challenge the path forward. In this way, comparable units of analysis are created facilitating the analysis of patterns within and among episode, as well as the identification of underlying mechanisms. By making explicit the “intermediate step”, the approach bridges the gap between data collection and theory building in a way that is substantiated by empirical data, the “grand theory”, and the logic of process research. The paper demonstrates how the approach can be employed by examples from an in-depth longitudinal case study.

  • Being in Business: A Sensemaking Perspective on Spiritual Transformation at Work
  • 2020
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Building on sensemaking theory and Erich Fromm’s distinction between the existential modes of having and being, this paper explores the process in which managers integrate spirituality into their working lives through a longitudinal, clinical research project. The being mode of existence offers a way to bypass the grip of identity in the sensemaking process, opening up for new ways of enactment, and thus, a way for spirituality to be integrated into the evolving self. The interplay between identity and context in the sensemaking process is discussed, and it is suggested that the existential mode of being may provide in order for new cues, interpretations, and action possibilities to emerge. By articulating the role of mode of existence in the sensemaking process, this paper also contributes to the sensemaking perspective. The notion of being-based doing is developed as a way of talking about actions that stem from the existential mode of being, including mindfulness, compassion, and other states grounded based in experiencing.
