  • Extending Rigor and Relevance: Towards Credible, Contributory and Communicable Research
  • 2007
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • There are many ways to discuss research quality. This paper aims at presenting an actionable framework for research quality, which can be used as guiding principles for identifying important dimensions when evaluating research. The framework takes its starting point in prior suggestions that research should be rigorous, relevant and consumable. When examining the rigor aspect it is argued that this is a means rather than an end. By being rigorous, research strives to be credible. This also calls for consistency and transparency. Similarly, it is argued that relevance is a means for research to be contributory. To be contributory research also has to be original and generalizable. Research has to be consumable in order to be communicable, but to become a consumed piece of research it must also be accessible. Starting out with the agenda of discussing research being rigorous, relevant and consumable, the paper instead ends up with a call for research being credible, contributory and communicable. By using the dimensions presented in the paper, researchers may increase the quality of research efforts both in research design, as well as research execution and research presentation.

  • Generic modelling of cell control systems and production resources
  • 1997
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 7th Conference on Flexible Automation andIntelligent Manufacturing, FAIM ´97, 1997. ; , s. 123-134
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Frequent changes regarding products, processes, and technologies require the manufacturing systems and the control systems to be inexpensive, flexible, and easy to re-configure. The major aim of the research presented in this paper is to define a generic reference architecture that supports design and implementation of highly flexible control-systems for manufacturing cells. Based on the analyses of two machining cells, a preliminary version of such an architecture has been developed. The main features of this are: (I) modular control structure with one module for each resource in the cell, (2) message-based, generic communication between the system's modules, (3) separation of generic and specific control activities, and (4) separation of the products' operation lists from the description of the resources' capabilities. Among manufacturing cells in the industry, there is a great variety considering system layout, product flow, and the resources' capacity, flexibility, and operation. Therefore, in order to gain a more generic architecture for manufacturing systems, different types of production resources available, processes, manufacturing system layouts, and product flows have been analysed and classified based on information gathered in an industrial survey. Based on this analysis, the applicability of the architecture is discussed. It is concluded that the architecture is directly applicable to most cells, and if some modifications are made in the architecture in order to handle specific features observed, the architecture could be made applicable to all cell types defined except one.

  • A Longitudinal Investigation Of Business Angel Relationship Risk Mitigation Strategies Within Investments - A Three-dimensional Approach
  • 2015
  • Proceedings (redaktörskap) (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Business angel (BA) investing is associated with various types of risks, where relationship risk often is highlighted as being especially critical (Fiet, 1995). Three investor strategies for mitigating relationship risks associated with BA investing in young private firms can be traced in the literature: (i) indirect control through monitoring and rewarding/punishing entrepreneur behavior and output, (ii) direct control through active involvement, and (iii) relying on mutual trust (Van Osnabrugge and Robinson, 2000; Maxwell and Lévesque, 2011). While early research in the field adopted a rather static view on BA categorization (Coveney and Moore, 1998; Sørheim and Landström, 2001), more contemporary research shows that BAs change investment roles across investments (Avdeitchikova, 2008; Lahti, 2011). However, whether BAs behave differently regarding risk mitigation within investments is less explored. This explorative study contributes to the opening of the black box of how BAs may shift risk mitigation strategies over time within single investments.

  • Functional coupling in manufacturing systems and its implications
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the Institution of mechanical engineers. Part B, journal of engineering manufacture. - : SAGE Publications. - 0954-4054 .- 2041-2975. ; 216:4, s. 623-626
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The axiomatic design theory as stated by Suh has proven useful when designing products, and this success has led to an increasing interest in applying the theory to manufacturing systems development. The theory states that functional couplings should be avoided in general. However, manufacturing systems are potentially coupled in many ways, the most obvious being that manufacturing operations usually are performed in a sequence. Functional coupling is defined as a dependence between functional requirements. The subject of couplings in manufacturing systems is not extensively explored or described in the literature, and specifically not in relation to the axiomatic design theory. Five different categories of couplings in manufacturing systems are described and exemplified in this paper. Couplings can be designed into the manufacturing system for a diverse range of reasons, e.g. selection of manufacturing processes or materials, but they may also be irrational, e.g. decisions based on political opinions.

  • Educational hybrids: The importance of physical arenas to engage all senses.
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Sweden through the crisis. - Stockholm : Stockholm School of Economics Institute for Research. - 9789186797386 ; , s. 509-521
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • In this article, Martin Carlsson-Wall and Pär Mårtensson discuss the importance of face-to-face education. Even though digital technology has a lot of potential, the authors highlight how physical arenas are important for mobilizing all senses. For business schools like the Stockholm School of Economics, a world-class experience is most likely driven by traditional face-to-face education.

  • Information management for the factory planning process
  • 2009
  • Licentiatavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This thesis is based on the present needs for the factory planning support, of which the most important ones are: • A structured reuse of knowledge and support for industries. Because today the industry handbook in factory planning is not satisfying enough to support this complex process. • Better methods to represent and communicate data between software within the factory layout area for easier data communication and thereby information access, exchange and reuse. To support the factory planning, based on the mentioned needs, a mapping of the present factory planning process is made based on knowledge from industry and academy. Since the factory planning process is a huge and complex process that no one can handle by themself, a puzzle work is performed. Based on gathered information and knowledge an activity model is developed, to structure the data and information. The model gives a better overview on the actual course of events and in this way also “captures” the most important information to be represented for data exchange among different software applications and different people. In this thesis the most important information in factory layout is gathered and structured in a concept model for factory layout. Since the concepts depend on the context in which they are used, it is extremely important to present every concept in its relationship with other related concepts within the area.  A general theory and state-of-the-art definitions in the area is presented and discussed for a factory planning information management system. An evaluation and discussion is made for the state-of-the-art software in the area of concern.

  • 2003. - 1st
  • Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This book aims at advancing out understanding of information systems and IT-related organisational change. It spurs the development of the field by investigating fundamental concepts, discussing research-based models and frameworks, and reflecting on the field’s evolution and current practices. Intended readers of the book are graduate-level university and business school students, researchers, and reflective practitioners. Of the scholar contributing to the book’s nineteen chapters, many have played important roles in the development of the field in Scandinavia, Continental Europe, the United Kingdom, the United States, and Australia.
