  • A World Order in Transformation? : A Comparative Study of Consequences of the War and Reactions to These Changes in the Region
  • 2024
  • Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Russia's full-scale invasion and war of aggression against Ukraine has, in addition to all the destruction, grief and terror for the people concerned, unravelled the profound instability in what has conventionally been understood as the world order. The annual publication CBEES State of the Region report focuses on Central and Eastern Europe, the former Soviet Union, the Balkans, and the Baltic Sea region, where we find countries that are closest to the war. This year, we have engaged over 30 scholars to analyze how the countries in this region have been affected by the war to form a tentative understanding of the unfolding consequences of the war for the region. Understandably, the consequences of the war tie into historical and contemporary conditions that also preceded the war.The report presents a contemporary overview of the diversity of challenges the region and its countries face today, both on a macro level and on a grassroots level and gives a preliminary analysis of the implications for the region's future.

  • Constructions and Instrumentalization of the Past : A Comparative Study on Memory Management in the Region
  • 2020
  • Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The CBEES State of the Region Report 2020 reveals disturbing tendencies to control and politicize the past in several countries in Central and Eastern Europe. Also, the report documents the great extent to which authoritarian and authoritarian-leaning governments actively intervene in how crucial parts of their country’s history are to be written, taught, researched, remembered, and commemorated – or neglected and ignored. Furthermore, the report discusses the failure of some governments to deal with restitution for past injustices, and the way some politicians forbid access to important state archives, hinder the teaching of the history of contemporary events, or withdraw funding to or even close down independent research institutions altogether.

  • Ecological Concerns in Transition : A Comparative Study on Responses to Waste and Environmental Destruction in the Region
  • 2023
  • Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The aim of the CBEES State of the Region Report 2022/23 is to present an insight to the diferent environmental challenges facing the region due to the legacy of communist modernity, the breakdown of communism and the transition period, aswell as the ongoing war. It also sheds light on how political and economical concerns shape the approach to the environment and maps contemporary awareness and responses, forms of resistance and engagements with these issues in the region. The report gathers in-depth analyses of environmental concerns intransition in the region with particular focus on destruction and waste. It draws out common features, but also highlights local and cultural diversity in the region when it comes to waste, nature and activism. The report consists of essays dealing with overall themes and 15 country reports. Together the individual contributions givea nuanced picture of the environmental threats in the region, the complexity linked to ideas of modernity and political and economic decision-making as well as values and rights claimedby Indigenous people and even nature itself. The current war in Ukraine adds another dimension to ecological concerns and bring new levels of destruction to the region. The report is the third in a series of annual reports from CBEES (Centre for Baltic and East European Studies), reporting and refecting on the social and political developmentsin the Baltic Sea Region and Central and Eastern Europe, each year from a new and topical perspective. The overall purpose with this initiative is to offer a publication that will be of great interest to fellow researchers, policy makers, stakeholders, and the general public.

  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Baltic Worlds. - Stockholm : Centre for Baltic and East European Studies. - 2000-2955 .- 2001-7308. ; 2:3-4, s. 10-13
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • With the fall of the Wall and the introduction of a market economy in Eastern Europe, trafficking has become increasingly common. The countries of the region have cooperated with the EU in attempts to stop this activity. But trafficking has not diminished. There are those who claim that anti-trafficking efforts have actually led to increased trafficking. Others are of the opinion that the efforts are misdirected, that the welfare of the victims is being ignored.

  • Offer, objekt,förlorare, försörjare, aktör : en mångfasetterad bild av traffickerade kvinnor
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Tidskrift för Genusvetenskap. - Linköping : Föreningen Tidskrift för genusvetenskap. - 1654-5443 .- 2001-1377. ; :3, s. 107-134
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The intention of this article is to broaden the perception of women trafficked for sexual purposes. It is argued here that women can be both victims and actors; they may for example at the same time be main supporters of a household and passive objects in a merciless commerce. Victimhood is a social construction, it is stressed here. The image of a trafficking victim is a notion that the trafficked women is related to and ordered by. Those that fulfill the idea of trafficked women are more likely to get support and assistance. An empirical study of 9000 trafficked persons from seven different countries of the former Soviet Union and Eastern Bloc is presented. An analysis of the respondents shows that there are differences among them, and intersectional relationships within the group of trafficked persons. Four sub-groups are identified, and various push and pull factors are linked to those sub-groups. Their specific needs and problems are discussed from different feminist theoretical perspectives, and applied on four case studies. The empirical study and its results may in-deepen the understanding of the variety amongst trafficked women and thus enable support and identification mechanisms to be evaluated to meet the needs of each subgroup under the umbrella of trafficked persons for sexual purposes.
