  • Variability of 10Be and δ18O in snow pits from Greenland and a surface traverse from Antarctica
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the Twelfth International Conference on Accelerator Mass Spectrometry. - : Elsevier BV. ; , s. 568-572
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • To examine temporal variability of 10Be in glacial ice, we sampled snow to a depth of 160 cm at the NEEM (North Greenland Eemian Ice Drilling) drilling site in Greenland. The samples span three years between the summers of 2006 and 2009. At the same time, spatial variability of 10Be in glacial ice was explored through collection of the upper ∼5 cm of surface snow in Antarctica during part of the Swedish-Japanese traverse from Svea to Syowa station during the austral summer in 2007-2008. The results of the Greenlandic 10Be snow suggested variable concentrations that apparently do not clearly reflect the seasonal change as indicated by the δ18O data. The 10Be concentration variability most likely reflects also effects of aerosol loading and deposition pathways, possibly in combination with post-depositional processes. The Antarctic traverse data expose a negative correlation between 10Be and δ18O, while there are weaker but still significant correlations to altitude and distance to the coast (approximated by the distance to the 70th latitude). These relationships indicate that geographical factors, mainly the proximity to the coast, may strongly affect 10Be concentrations in snow in Queen Maud Land, Antarctica.

  • Hydrogeochemistry of sulfur isotopes in the Kalix River catchment, northern Sweden
  • 1997
  • Ingår i: Applied Geochemistry. - 0883-2927 .- 1872-9134. ; 12:4, s. 483-496
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The 34S-to-32S ratio in dissolved SO4 has been studied in the Kalix River, Northern Sweden, and its catchment. Weekly sampling over 17 months revealed temporal variations from +5.3‰ up to +7.4‰ in the δ34S values in the river. Snow and rain samples showed lower δ34S values (average +5.6‰ and +5.0‰, respectively). The atmosphere is the major source for S in surface waters in the catchment, and the heavier δ34S values in the river are a result of SO4 reduction within the catchment. Most of the temporal variations in the δ34S value in the river are caused by a mixing of water from the mountain areas (relatively light δ34S) and the woodland. The δ34S value is relatively heavy in the woodland tributaries because of bacterial SO4 reduction in peatland areas influenced by groundwater. The highest δ34S values were measured during the spring flood, in June and in November. These heavy δ34S values are related to different types of water with diverse origins. The heavy δ34S values coinciding with the early spring flood originate from peatland areas in the woodland. Relatively heavy δ34S values (up to +14.4‰) were registered in mire water. Smaller variations of the δ34S value during summer and early autumn most likely were caused by the input of ground-mire water during heavy rains. A correlation between increased TOC concentrations and increased δ34S values was observed. The heavy δ34S values in June and November probably originate from SO4 reduction in bottom water and sediments in lakes within the catchment. Bottom water, enriched in 34S---SO4, was transported in the river during the spring and autumn overturn.

  • Distribution and mobility of geogenic arsenic in the shallow aquifers of the northeast of La Pampa, Argentina
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Understanding the Geological and Medical Interface of Arsenic, As 2012 - 4th International Congress: Arsenic in the Environment. - 9780415637633 ; , s. 132-134
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Groundwater contamination with elevated Arsenic (As) and other toxic trace elements has been studied in the central part of the vast Chaco-Pampean Plain, in the city of Quemú Quemú, northeastern La Pampa, Argentina. The groundwater samples were mostly alkaline with pH ranging up to 9.18, oxidizing and characterized by high EC. The concentration of total As (5.58-535 μg/L) and fluoride (0.5-14.2 mg/L) in some samples exceeded the recommended WHO drinking water guideline and the Argentine national drinking water standard. Arsenic was positively correlated with bicarbonate (HCO 3 -), Boron (B), Fluoride (F) and Vanadium (V). Long-term consumption of the groundwater could pose a severe health threat for the local community.
