  • Noninvasive detection of any-stage cancer using free glycosaminoglycans.
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America. - : Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. - 0027-8424 .- 1091-6490. ; 119:50
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Cancer mortality is exacerbated by late-stage diagnosis. Liquid biopsies based on genomic biomarkers can noninvasively diagnose cancers. However, validation studies have reported ~10% sensitivity to detect stage I cancer in a screening population and specific types, such as brain or genitourinary tumors, remain undetectable. We investigated urine and plasma free glycosaminoglycan profiles (GAGomes) as tumor metabolism biomarkers for multi-cancer early detection (MCED) of 14 cancer types using 2,064 samples from 1,260 cancer or healthy subjects. We observed widespread cancer-specific changes in biofluidic GAGomes recapitulated in an in vivo cancer progression model. We developed three machine learning models based on urine (Nurine = 220 cancer vs. 360 healthy) and plasma (Nplasma = 517 vs. 425) GAGomes that can detect any cancer with an area under the receiver operating characteristic curve of 0.83-0.93 with up to 62% sensitivity to stage I disease at 95% specificity. Undetected patients had a 39 to 50% lower risk of death. GAGomes predicted the putative cancer location with 89% accuracy. In a validation study on a screening-like population requiring ≥ 99% specificity, combined GAGomes predicted any cancer type with poor prognosis within 18 months with 43% sensitivity (21% in stage I; N = 121 and 49 cases). Overall, GAGomes appeared to be powerful MCED metabolic biomarkers, potentially doubling the number of stage I cancers detectable using genomic biomarkers.

  • State with spontaneously broken time-reversal symmetry above the superconducting phase transition
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Nature Physics. - : Springer Nature. - 1745-2473 .- 1745-2481. ; 17:11, s. 1254-1259
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The most well-known example of an ordered quantum state—superconductivity—is caused by the formation and condensation of pairs of electrons. Fundamentally, what distinguishes a superconducting state from a normal state is a spontaneously broken symmetry corresponding to the long-range coherence of pairs of electrons, leading to zero resistivity and diamagnetism. Here we report a set of experimental observations in hole-doped Ba1−xKxFe2As2. Our specific-heat measurements indicate the formation of fermionic bound states when the temperature is lowered from the normal state. However, when the doping level is x ≈ 0.8, instead of the characteristic onset of diamagnetic screening and zero resistance expected below the superconducting phase transition, we observe the opposite effect: the generation of self-induced magnetic fields in the resistive state, measured by spontaneous Nernst effect and muon spin rotation experiments. This combined evidence indicates the existence of a bosonic metal state in which Cooper pairs of electrons lack coherence, but the system spontaneously breaks time-reversal symmetry. The observations are consistent with the theory of a state with fermionic quadrupling, in which long-range order exists not between Cooper pairs but only between pairs of pairs.

  • Effects of intercomponent couplings on the appearance of time-reversal symmetry breaking fermion-quadrupling states in two-component London models
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Physical Review B. - : American Physical Society (APS). - 2469-9950 .- 2469-9969. ; 105:21
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Detection of a bosonic metallic state that breaks the Z2 time-reversal symmetry has been recently reported in Ba1-xKxFe2As2 with a doping level x≈0.8. This is a metallic state of fermionic quadruplets that breaks time-reversal symmetry. As such, it has no condensed Cooper pairs but has a long-range order between fermionic quartets. In the present paper, we investigate the emergence of this phase in a two-component London model via Monte Carlo simulations as a function of various intercomponent couplings.

  • Interplay of spin waves and vortices in the two-dimensional XY model at small vortex-core energy
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Physical Review B. - : American Physical Society (APS). - 2469-9950 .- 2469-9969. ; 102:10
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) mechanism describes universal vortex unbinding in many two-dimensional systems, including the paradigmatic XY model. However, most of these systems present a complex interplay between excitations at different length scales that complicates theoretical calculations of nonuniversal thermodynamic quantities. These difficulties may be overcome by suitably modifying the initial conditions of the BKT flow equations to account for noncritical fluctuations at small length scales. In this work, we perform a systematic study of the validity and limits of this two-step approach by constructing optimised initial conditions for the BKT flow. We find that the two-step approach can accurately reproduce the results of Monte Carlo simulations of the traditional XY model. To systematically study the interplay between vortices and spin-wave excitations, we introduce a modified XY model with increased vortex fugacity. We present large-scale Monte Carlo simulations of the spin stiffness and vortex density for this modified XY model and show that even at large vortex fugacity, vortex unbinding is accurately described by the nonperturbative functional renormalization group.

  • Prediction of time-reversal-symmetry breaking fermionic quadrupling condensate in twisted bilayer graphene
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Physical Review B. - : American Physical Society (APS). - 2469-9950 .- 2469-9969. ; 107:6
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Recent mean-field calculations suggest that the superconducting state of twisted bilayer graphene exhibits ei-ther a nematic order or a spontaneous breakdown of the time-reversal symmetry. The two-dimensional character of the material and the large critical temperature relative to the Fermi energy dictate that the material should have significant fluctuations. We study the effects of these fluctuations using Monte Carlo simulations. We show that in a model proposed earlier for twisted bilayer graphene there is a fluctuation-induced phase with quadrupling fermionic order for all considered parameters. This four-electron condensate, instead of superconductivity, shows a spontaneous breaking of time-reversal symmetry. Our results suggest that twisted bilayer graphene is an especially promising platform to study different types of condensates, beyond the pair-condensate paradigm.

  • Transport signatures of fragile glass dynamics in the melting of the two-dimensional vortex lattice
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Physical Review B. - 2469-9950 .- 2469-9969. ; 107:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In a two-dimensional superconducting vortex lattice, the melting from the solid to the isotropic liquid can occur via an intermediate phase that retains orientational correlations. The effect of such correlations on transport and their interplay with the quenched disorder remain open questions. We perform magnetotransport measurements in a wide range of temperatures and magnetic fields on a weakly pinned two-dimensional vortex system in amorphous MoGe films. While at high fields, where quenched disorder dominates, we recover the typical strong-glass behavior of a vortex liquid, at low fields the resistivity shows a clear crossover to a fragile vortex glass. Our findings, supported by numerical simulations, suggest that this is a signature of heterogeneous dynamics that arises from the presence of orientational correlations.

  • Uniformly Frustrated XY Model : Strengthening of the Vortex Lattice by Intrinsic Disorder
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Condensed Matter. - : MDPI AG. - 2410-3896. ; 6:4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In superconducting films, the role of intrinsic disorder is typically to compete with superconductivity by fragmenting the global phase coherence and lowering the superfluid density. Nonetheless, when a transverse magnetic field is applied to the system and an Abrikosov vortex lattice form, the presence of disorder can actually strengthen the superconducting state against thermal fluctuations. By means of Monte Carlo simulations on the uniformly frustrated XY model in two dimensions, we show that while for weak pinning the superconducting critical temperature Tc increases with the applied field H, for strong enough pinning, the experimental decreasing dependence between Tc and H is recovered with a resulting more robust vortex lattice.

  • Vortex supersolid in the XY model with tunable vortex fugacity
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Journal of Physics. - 0953-8984 .- 1361-648X. ; 35:33
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper, we investigate the XY model in the presence of an additional potential term that independently tunes the vortex fugacity favouring their nucleation. By increasing the strength of this term and thereby the vortex chemical potential µ, we observe significant changes in the phase diagram with the emergence of a normal vortex-antivortex lattice as well as a superconducting vortex-antivortex crystal (lattice supersolid) phase. We examine the transition lines between these two phases and the conventional non-crystalline one as a function of both the temperature and the chemical potential. Our findings suggest the possibility of a peculiar tricritical point where second-order, first-order, and infinite-order transition lines meet. We discuss the differences between the present phase diagram and previous results for two-dimensional Coulomb gas models. Our study provides important insights into the behaviour of the modified XY model and opens up new possibilities for investigating the underlying physics of unconventional phase transitions.

  • Calorimetric evidence for two phase transitions in Calorimetric evidence for two phase transitions in Ba1−xKxFe2As2 with fermion pairing and quadrupling states
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Nature Communications. - : Nature Research. - 2041-1723. ; 14:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Materials that break multiple symmetries allow the formation of four-fermion condensates above the superconducting critical temperature (T c). Such states can be stabilized by phase fluctuations. Recently, a fermionic quadrupling condensate that breaks the Z 2 time-reversal symmetry was reported in Ba1−xKxFe2As2. A phase transition to the new state of matter should be accompanied by a specific heat anomaly at the critical temperature where Z 2 time-reversal symmetry is broken (TcZ2>Tc). Here, we report on detecting two anomalies in the specific heat of Ba1−xKxFe2As2 at zero magnetic field. The anomaly at the higher temperature is accompanied by the appearance of a spontaneous Nernst effect, indicating the breakdown of Z 2 symmetry. The second anomaly at the lower temperature coincides with the transition to a zero-resistance state, indicating the onset of superconductivity. Our data provide the first example of the appearance of a specific heat anomaly above the superconducting phase transition associated with the broken time-reversal symmetry due to the formation of the novel fermion order.

  • Finite-Frequency Dissipation in Two-Dimensional Superconductors with Disorder at the Nanoscale
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Nanomaterials. - : MDPI AG. - 2079-4991. ; 11:8
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Two-dimensional superconductors with disorder at the nanoscale can host a variety of intriguing phenomena. The superconducting transition is marked by a broad percolative transition with a long tail of the resistivity as function of the temperature. The fragile filamentary superconducting clusters, forming at low temperature, can be strengthened further by proximity effect with the surrounding metallic background, leading to an enhancement of the superfluid stiffness well below the percolative transition. Finite-frequency dissipation effects, e.g., related to the appearance of thermally excited vortices, can also significantly contribute to the resulting physics. Here, we propose a random impedance model to investigate the role of dissipation effects in the formation and strengthening of fragile superconducting clusters, discussing the solution within the effective medium theory.
