This contribution highlights its role and presents various activity plans.

A review 2003 In: The NECTAR (Network on European Communication and Transportation Activities Research) Conference No. 7, Umeå, Sweden June 13-15.. ; , s. paper 7.3- Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract Intermodal transport, the combination and integration of several modes, with the use of loading units,has been said to be more environmentally friendly than unimodal road transport for the carriage ofgoods. The political and scientific interest in this transport market is largely due to this sustainablityand ecological aspect of the intermodal transportation system. In this paper an overview is given ofstudies and papers that are tackling the issue of the external effects of both intermodal and unimodaltransport. An overview is given of the types of external costs that were taken into account (emissions,security, noise,...) and the methodologies that were used to estimate the external effects and to valuethese effects in terms of costs. The results of the different studies are compared to each other andcommon conclusions are drawn.
