    • GRE@T-PIONEeR - GRaduate Education Alliance for Teaching the PhysIcs and safety Of NuclEar Reactors - is a project funded by the Euratom – Horizon 2020 Framework Programme which aims at developing and providing specialised and advanced courses in computational and experimental reactor physics at the graduate level (MSc and PhD levels) and post-graduate level, as well as the staff members working in the nuclear industry. One of the work packages of GRE@T-PIONEeR is devoted to developing a specific course on the nuclear data pipeline processes and to present the role of nuclear data to play in calculations of innovative reactor systems. This course covers all steps in the nuclear data life cycle, starting from the measurements to their validation and final use in nuclear reactor calculations. Beyond the technical contents of the courses being developed, the paper describes the use of innovative pedagogical methods and active learning techniques, such as flipped classes, aimed at promoting student learning.

  • Enhancing higher education through hybrid and flipped learning: Experiences from the GRE@T-PIONEeR project

    • GRE@T-PIONEeR is a Horizon 2020 project coordinated by Chalmers University of Technology, running over the period 2020–2024. 18 university teachers from 8 different universities located in 6 different countries gathered forces to develop and offer advanced courses in computational and experimental nuclear reactor physics and safety. All courses are flipped hybrid courses, i.e., students work on online preparatory activities at their own pace before attending a set of interactive sessions organized on five consecutive days. Those sessions can be attended either onsite or remotely. During the academic year 2022/2023, 8 different courses were offered, and 185 students successfully completed the courses, with a success rate of 87.7% for the students taking at least one activity during the interactive sessions. Student behaviour and performance were monitored via the Learning Management System (LMS) used in all courses. This paper presents an analysis of various metrics from the LMS and demonstrates a high level of engagement of the students committed to the courses and a high success rate for those students. Whereas all students are equally engaged in the online preparatory work and perform equally well, significant differences exist during the interactive sessions between the students who opted for onsite participation and those who attended the sessions online, with the onsite students outperforming the online students.

    • The GRE@T-PIONEeR project is a Horizon 2020 project financed from the 2019-2020 European Union’s Euratom research and training programme. The objective of the project is to preserve the competences and skills in computational and experimental reactor physics and nuclear safety. This is achieved by developing a set of advanced courses offered to PhD and Post-Doc students, nuclear professionals, and to MSc students (as specialisation courses). The courses are given as flipped classes in a hybrid learning environment, where students can decide to attend the interactive hands-on sessions either on-site or on the web. The paper presents the project set-up and the main concepts that are followed, both content-wise and pedagogy-wise. The main actions that have been undertaken during the first 11 months that the project has been running are also summarised. The project will lead to a state-of-the-art education using innovative pedagogical approaches having student learning as primary focus.

  • Guidelines for the use and interpretation of assays for monitoring autophagy

    • In 2008 we published the first set of guidelines for standardizing research in autophagy. Since then, research on this topic has continued to accelerate, and many new scientists have entered the field. Our knowledge base and relevant new technologies have also been expanding. Accordingly, it is important to update these guidelines for monitoring autophagy in different organisms. Various reviews have described the range of assays that have been used for this purpose. Nevertheless, there continues to be confusion regarding acceptable methods to measure autophagy, especially in multicellular eukaryotes. A key point that needs to be emphasized is that there is a difference between measurements that monitor the numbers or volume of autophagic elements (e.g., autophagosomes or autolysosomes) at any stage of the autophagic process vs. those that measure flux through the autophagy pathway (i.e., the complete process); thus, a block in macroautophagy that results in autophagosome accumulation needs to be differentiated from stimuli that result in increased autophagic activity, defined as increased autophagy induction coupled with increased delivery to, and degradation within, lysosomes (in most higher eukaryotes and some protists such as Dictyostelium) or the vacuole (in plants and fungi). In other words, it is especially important that investigators new to the field understand that the appearance of more autophagosomes does not necessarily equate with more autophagy. In fact, in many cases, autophagosomes accumulate because of a block in trafficking to lysosomes without a concomitant change in autophagosome biogenesis, whereas an increase in autolysosomes may reflect a reduction in degradative activity. Here, we present a set of guidelines for the selection and interpretation of methods for use by investigators who aim to examine macroautophagy and related processes, as well as for reviewers who need to provide realistic and reasonable critiques of papers that are focused on these processes. These guidelines are not meant to be a formulaic set of rules, because the appropriate assays depend in part on the question being asked and the system being used. In addition, we emphasize that no individual assay is guaranteed to be the most appropriate one in every situation, and we strongly recommend the use of multiple assays to monitor autophagy. In these guidelines, we consider these various methods of assessing autophagy and what information can, or cannot, be obtained from them. Finally, by discussing the merits and limits of particular autophagy assays, we hope to encourage technical innovation in the field.

    • The thermal-hydraulic (TH) system code ATHLET was coupled with the commercial 3D computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software package ANSYS CFX to improve ATHLET simulation capabilities for flows with pronounced 3D phenomena such as flow mixing and thermal stratification. Within the FP7 European project THINS (Thermal Hydraulics of Innovative Nuclear Systems), validation activities for coupled thermal-hydraulic codes are being carried out. The TALL-3D experimental facility, operated by KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm, is designed for thermal-hydraulic experiments with lead-bismuth eutectic (LBE) coolant at natural and forced circulation conditions. No tests have been performed up to now. GRS carried out pre-test simulations with ATHLET - ANSYS CFX for the TALL-3D experiment T01, while KTH scientists perform these analyses with the coupled code RELAP5/STAR CCM+. In the experiment T01 the main circulation pump is stopped, which leads to interesting thermal-hydraulic transient with local 3D phenomena. In this paper, the TALL-3D behavior during T01 is analyzed and the results of the coupled pre-test calculations, performed by GRS (ATHLET-ANSYS CFX) and KTH (RELAP5/STAR CCM+) are directly compared. Moreover, this work is supplemented by uncertainty and sensitivity analysis for the T01 experiment, carried out at the Technische Universitaet Muenchen.

  • Uncertainty analyses of neutron noise simulations in a Zero-Power reactor

    • A comprehensive uncertainty analysis methodology has been established for the modeling of stationary neutron flux oscillations induced by fuel rods vibration in a zero-power reactor. The methodology includes uncertainty propagation and sensitivity analysis. The target event is based on an actual experimental campaign at the CROCUS zero-power reactor and corresponds to the simultaneous oscillation of 18 metallic uranium fuel rods in the periphery of the core. Both the uncertainty propagation and the sensitivity analysis commonly use a large part of the entire analysis process, from the selection of uncertain parameters to the actual code simulations. Applying a random sampling-based approach, the input parameters are sampled N times from their distribution information and used as inputs for N noise simulations using CORE SIM +. The quantity of interest (QoI) is the amplitude of the Auto-Power Spectral Density at various detector locations, which is normalized by the amplitude of the Cross-Power Spectral Density of the reference detector. Their uncertainties are determined following the 4th order Wilks’ formula for two-sided limits. Through the determination of correlations among QoI at the installed detector locations, it is demonstrated that the neutron noise near the area of oscillating fuel rods (noise source) have different behavior compared to the neutron noise further away from the noise source. The following sensitivity analyses are carried out using multiple correlation coefficients within grouped parameters. As expected from the QoI correlations, the QoIs at two different locations (near and far from the noise source) are influenced by different input parameters. Near the noise source, the QoI uncertainty is driven by the uncertainties in the position of the noise source, while the uncertainties in the nuclear data for U-235 and U-238 are the leading contributors further away from the source. This paper provides general information on how to perform the uncertainty analyses for neutron noise simulations, as well as quantitative estimates of the computational uncertainty required for the validation of the computer programs under development for the simulation of neutron noise.
