  • Surface Properties of Nanocrystalline PbS Films Deposited at the Water-Oil Interface: A Study of Atmospheric Aging
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Langmuir. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 0743-7463 .- 1520-5827. ; 31:4, s. 1445-1453
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Nanocrystalline thin films of PbS are obtained in a straightforward reaction by precipitation at the interface between toluene (containing a Pb precursor) and water (containing Na2S). Lead thiobiuret [Pb(SON(CN(i)Pr-2)(2))(2)] and lead diethyldithiocarbamate [Pb(S2CNEt2)(2)] precursors are used. The films are characterized by X-ray diffraction and electron microscopy, revealing typical particle sizes of 10-40 nm and preferred (200) orientation. Synchrotron-excited depth-profiling X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) is used to determine the depth-dependent chemical composition as a function of surface aging in air for periods of up to 9 months. The as-synthesized films show a 1:1 Pb/S composition. Initial degradation occurs to form lead hydroxide and small quantities of surface-adsorbed -SH species. A lead-deficient Pb1-xS phase is produced as the aging proceeds. Oxidation of the sulfur occurs later to form sulfite and sulfate products that are highly localized at the surface layers of the nanocrystals. These species show logarithmic growth kinetics, demonstrating that the sulfite/sulfate layer acts to passivate the nanocrystals. Our results demonstrate that the initial reaction of the PbS nanocrystals (forming lead hydroxide) is incongruent. The results are discussed in the context of the use of PbS nanocrystals as light-harvesting elements in next-generation solar technology.

  • Distal fusion level, complications, and reoperations in individuals with cerebral palsy undergoing surgery for scoliosis
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: European spine journal. - : Springer. - 0940-6719 .- 1432-0932. ; 32:11, s. 4037-4044
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • PurposeTo compare radiological outcome, complications and reoperations in individuals with cerebral palsy and scoliosis fused to the fifth lumbar vertebra (L5), the sacrum, or the ilia.Methods208 individuals were identified in the national quality registry Swespine. Lowest level of fusion was L5 in 58, the sacrum in 92, and the ilia in 58 individuals. A subanalysis on 58 matched pairs operated to L5 or the pelvis (sacrum = 42, ilia = 16) with similar pelvic obliquity (± 5°) was performed.ResultsThe median (interquartile range) follow-up for the last radiograph was 1.7 (1.7) years and for reoperations 6.0 (5.9) years. Preoperatively, median Cobb angle of the major curve was 65° (23°) in the L5 group, 68° (28°) in the sacrum group, and 78° (25°) in the ilia group (p = 0.006). Preoperative median pelvic obliquity according to Maloney was 16° (19°), 21° (13°), and 27° (28°), respectively (p = 0.004). Immediate postoperative Cobb angles were 28° (18°), 28° (16°), and 32° (25°), respectively (p = 0.11). Immediate postoperative pelvic obliquity was 7° (10°), 7° (8°), and 8° (10°), respectively (p = 0.28). The median change in pelvic obliquity from the first to the last postoperative radiograph was − 5° (7°), − 3° (6°), − 3° (6°), respectively (p = 0.55). 7 (12%), 11 (12%), and 7 (12%) patients required at least one reoperation (p = 1.0), respectively. In the matched analysis, no significant differences in the radiological outcomes were found (all p ≥  0.38).ConclusionsMaintained curve and pelvic obliquity correction with no significant difference in complication and reoperation rates were found irrespective of distal fusion level.

  • Soft x-ray spectroscopies in liquids and at solid-liquid interface at BACH beamline at Elettra
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Review of Scientific Instruments. - : American Institute of Physics (AIP). - 0034-6748 .- 1089-7623. ; 92:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The beamline for advanced dichroism of the Istituto Officina dei Materiali-Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche, operating at the Elettra synchrotron in Trieste (Italy), works in the extreme ultraviolet-soft x-ray photon energy range with selectable light polarization, high energy resolution, brilliance, and time resolution. The beamline offers a multi-technique approach for the investigation of the electronic, chemical, structural, magnetic, and dynamical properties of materials. Recently, one of the three end stations has been dedicated to experiments based on electron transfer processes at the solid/liquid interfaces and during photocatalytic or electrochemical reactions. Suitable cells to perform soft x-ray spectroscopy in the presence of liquids and reagent gases at ambient pressure were developed. Here, we present two types of static cells working in transmission or in fluorescence yield and an electrochemical flow cell that allows us to carry out cyclic voltammetry in situ and electrodeposition on a working electrode and to study chemical reactions under operando conditions. Examples of x-ray absorption spectroscopy measurements performed under ambient conditions and during electrochemical experiments in liquids are presented.
