- Om boken:I 2009 feirer Psykologisk Institutt i Oslo 100-årsjubileum. Dette er også et jubileum for psykologifagets hundre år i Norge, som blant annet markeres med utgivelsen av denne antologien. Som bokens redaktører sier i forordet: "For er det noe som særpreger dette faget, så er det divergerende synsmåter og faglige posisjoner. Dermed kan vi også si at boken gir et dekkende bilde av sentrale problemstillinger i psykologien." Fagets utvikling gjennom hundre år har vært formet av sterke og kreative personligheter, noe som igjen har resultert i faglige uenigheter underveis. Her blir disse konfliktene belyst og benyttet for å vise psykologiens kompleksitet. Tittelen refererer til to hovedarenaer som psykologifaget historisk sett er tuftet på, og som fortsatt står i sentrum når det gjelder studier av menneskers opplevelse og atferd. Simulating newborn face perception

- A frequently asked question concerns what a newborn infant can actually see. The contrast sensitivity function of newborn infants is well known, but its implications for the ability of newborns to perceive faces of adults remain unclear. We filtered gray scale animations of facial expressions in terms of both spatial frequency and contrast to correspond to the properties of newborn infants' acuity and showed them to adult participants. We reasoned that if adults were unable to identify the depicted facial expressions, then it would also seem unlikely that newborn infants could identify the same expressions. We found that for the simulated acuity the different expressions could be rather well identified at a distance of 30 cm, but when the distance was increased to 120 cm their discriminability was much degraded. This shows that although the perception of faces and facial expressions can function at the low visual resolution of the newborn infant, it is insufficient for distinguishing faces and facial expressions at moderate distances.

- One of the exceptional accomplishments of humans is their ability to visually imagine objects and mentally simulate events that are physically absent. Sometimes this is done from memory, such as when we imagine the appearance of the beach where we have spent our last holiday. Sometimes it is done by combining perceptual input with stored knowledge, e.g., while inspecting rooms offered for sale, we consider their usefulness and may mentally furnish them. However, sometimes we even imagine doing things that we are unable to perform in reality, such as making a perfect drive at the first tee of the golf course.
