  • Rhetorical Strategies and Effects of Negative Campaigning : A Comparative Study of Political TV-debates in Germany and Sweden
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: 2nd European Communication Conference. ; , s. 1-34
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Although televised debates belong to the most important campaign events in countries where they are being held, there is still a dearth of cross-national studies. This is particularly true with respect to research on both the rhetorical strategies used in, and the effects of, televised debates. Against this background, the purpose of this article is to study the use and effectiveness of negativity as a rhetorical strategy in televised debates in Germany and Sweden. Combining content analyses and experiments using real-time response measurements, the study finds that negative statements are common in both countries, and more so in Sweden than in Germany. With the exception of negative statements in Germany, the debates focused overwhelmingly on issues and policies rather than character. However, the study found no consistent support for the notion that negative messages are more effective than positive messages. There was one important exception though, suggesting the contingent nature of the effectiveness of negativity as rhetorical strategy used in televised debates.

  • Common variants in Alzheimer’s disease and risk stratification by polygenic risk scores
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Nature Communications. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 2041-1723. ; 12:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Genetic discoveries of Alzheimer’s disease are the drivers of our understanding, and together with polygenetic risk stratification can contribute towards planning of feasible and efficient preventive and curative clinical trials. We first perform a large genetic association study by merging all available case-control datasets and by-proxy study results (discovery n = 409,435 and validation size n = 58,190). Here, we add six variants associated with Alzheimer’s disease risk (near APP, CHRNE, PRKD3/NDUFAF7, PLCG2 and two exonic variants in the SHARPIN gene). Assessment of the polygenic risk score and stratifying by APOE reveal a 4 to 5.5 years difference in median age at onset of Alzheimer’s disease patients in APOE ɛ4 carriers. Because of this study, the underlying mechanisms of APP can be studied to refine the amyloid cascade and the polygenic risk score provides a tool to select individuals at high risk of Alzheimer’s disease. © 2021, The Author(s).

  • Genome-wide meta-analysis for Alzheimer's disease cerebrospinal fluid biomarkers.
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Acta neuropathologica. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1432-0533 .- 0001-6322. ; 144:5, s. 821-842
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Amyloid-beta 42 (Aβ42) and phosphorylated tau (pTau) levels in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) reflect core features of the pathogenesis of Alzheimer's disease (AD) more directly than clinical diagnosis. Initiated by the European Alzheimer & Dementia Biobank (EADB), the largest collaborative effort on genetics underlying CSF biomarkers was established, including 31 cohorts with a total of 13,116 individuals (discovery n=8074; replication n=5042 individuals). Besides the APOE locus, novel associations with two other well-established AD risk loci were observed; CR1 was shown a locus for Aβ42 and BIN1 for pTau. GMNC and C16orf95 were further identified as loci for pTau, of which the latter is novel. Clustering methods exploring the influence of all known AD risk loci on the CSF protein levels, revealed 4 biological categories suggesting multiple Aβ42 and pTau related biological pathways involved in the etiology of AD. In functional follow-up analyses, GMNC and C16orf95 both associated with lateral ventricular volume, implying an overlap in genetic etiology for tau levels and brain ventricular volume.

  • Zwei russische Gelegenheitsgedichte aus Dorpat (1642) und ihr schwedischer Verfasser Johan Roslin
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Scando-Slavica. - : Routledge. - 0080-6765 .- 1600-082X. ; 54:1, s. 102-134
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Two occasional poems in Russian from Tartu (1642) and their Swedish author Johan Roslin. In 1642, a collection of poems was published in Tartu (formerly known as Dorpat) on the occasion of a student’s return to Sweden. This collection resembles dozens of similar products published in those days, except for the fact that it also contains two poems in a kind of Russian printed with Latin characters. One of them carries the heading “Sclavonice”, indicating that it was the author’s intention to write a poem in Church Slavonic, as opposed to the heading of the second poem, “Moscovitica vulgariter”, i. e. the Russian vernacular. This article offers an edition of the poems, both in Latin characters and as a “re-transliteration” into the Cyrillic version (the presumed starting point). It comments extensively on the author’s “transliteration system” and linguistic skills. Both poems are written in Russian, despite the fact that especially the first contains several Church Slavonic features. The author’s knowledge of Russian was very good for a foreign student, albeit not comparable with the skills of an educated person who has learned Russian as a native language. The paper also provides new biographical data on the author, Johan Roslin, who later worked for the Swedish Crown as a translator of Russian. He seems to have aimed at such a career already during his student days in Uppsala and Tartu, as can be inferred from his choice of surnames.

  • Is there a visual bias in televised debates? Evidence from Germany, 2002–2017
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Visual Communication. - : SAGE Publications. - 1470-3572 .- 1741-3214. ; 22:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Media professionals make use of various production techniques in the visual portrayal of politicians on television. A large body of literature indicates that these techniques exert varying influence on, for example, the evaluation of these actors, leading to the question of whether politicians are depicted in an equal way. Focusing on televised debates, this content analysis of five German debates aims to determine if there is a visual bias in the portrayal of candidates, depending on party affiliation, gender and role. Among other forms of bias, the authors find a difference in the use of camera movements and angle depending on the candidate’s gender and party affiliation.

  • This time it's different? : Effects of the Eurovision Debate on young citizens and its consequence for EU democracy - evidence from a quasi-experiment in 24 countries
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Journal of European Public Policy. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1350-1763 .- 1466-4429. ; 25:4, s. 606-629
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • For the very first time in EU history, the 2014 EP elections provided citizens with the opportunity to influence the nomination of the Commission President by casting a vote for the main Europarties’ ‘lead candidates’. By subjecting the position of the Commission President to an open political contest, many experts have formulated the expectation that heightened political competition would strengthen the weak electoral connection between EU citizens and EU legislators, which some consider a root cause for the EU’s lack of public support. In particular, this contest was on display in the so-called ‘Eurovision Debate’, a televised debate between the main contenders for the Commission President broadcasted live across Europe. Drawing on a quasi-experimental study conducted in 24 EU countries, we find that debate exposure led to increased cognitive and political involvement and EU support among young citizens. Unfortunately, the debate has only reached a very small audience.

  • Do They Really Matter? : Effects of Televised Political Debates on Party Choice in the 2006 Swedish Parliamentary Election Campaign
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: XV Nordic Political Science Association Conference.
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Televised political debates have become increasingly common during the last decades, and they belong to the most important campaign events in countries where they are being held. However, there is still no scholarly consensus with respect to the effects on voting intention from watching televised debates, while there is also a lack of research on debate effects on voting intention in countries with proportional elections and multi-party systems. Against this background, the purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of televised political debates on party choice in the context of the 2006 Swedish parliamentary election. Using an experimental panel design with five waves and including two televised debates with different formats, this study shows that televised debates do have both direct and indirect effects on people’s party choice, and that in order to capture the real impact of televised debates, it is important to focus on individual-level effects and not only aggregate effects.
