    • The broadly influential document Computing Curricula 2005 (CC2005) is in the process of being updated through a project called Computing Curricula 2020 (CC2020). CC2020 provides a vision for the future of computing education, including a comprehensive report that contrasts curricular guidelines, and contextualizing those guidelines within the broader landscape of computing education. In the process, a framework of competency-based educational principles has been developed which is closely aligned with other skills and qualifications frameworks. This working group report demonstrates one way in which the transition from current learning-outcomes-based practices to the competency-based practices can be approached. Further, the paper discusses the challenges and insights that have emerged as the learning outcomes for various Knowledge Areas in the CS2013 report were re-expressed in terms of competencies.

  • Time to onset of bisphosphonate-related osteonecrosis of the jaws : a multicentre retrospective cohort study

    • Objectives: Osteonecrosis of the jaw (ONJ) is a potentially severe adverse effect of bisphosphonates (BP). Although the risk of ONJ increases with increasing duration of BP treatment, there are currently no reliable estimates of the ONJ time to onset (TTO). The objective of this study was to estimate the TTO and associated risk factors in BP-treated patients.Subjects and Methods: Retrospective analysis of data from 22 secondary care centres in seven countries relevant to 349 patients who developed BP-related ONJ between 2004 and 2012.Results: The median (95%CI) TTO was 6.0 years in patients treated with alendronate (n=88) and 2.2years in those treated with zoledronate (n=218). Multivariable Cox regression showed that dentoalveolar surgery was inversely associated, and the use of antiangiogenics directly associated, with the TTO in patients with cancer treated with zoledronate.Conclusions: The incidence of ONJ increases with the duration of BP therapy, with notable differences observed with respect to BP type and potency, route of administration and underlying disease. When data are stratified by BP type, a time of 6.0 and 2.2years of oral alendronate and intravenous zoledronate therapy, respectively, is required for 50% of patients to develop ONJ. After stratification by disease, a time of 5.3 and 2.2years of BP therapy is required for 50% of patients with osteoporosis and cancer, respectively, to develop ONJ. These findings have significant implications for the design of future clinical studies and the development of risk-reduction strategies aimed at either assessing or modulating the risk of ONJ associated with BP.

  • Effect of Oral Administration of Bromelain on Postoperative Discomfort After Third Molar Surgery

    • Introduction:The purpose of this prospective randomized controlled clinical trial was to evaluate the effect of oral administration of bromelain on discomfort after mandibular third molar surgery. Materials and Methods: Eighty-four consecutive patients requiring surgical removal of a single mandibular impacted third molar under local anesthesia were randomly assigned to receiving no drug (control group, Group A), postoperative 40mg bromelain every 6 hours for 6 days (Group B), preoperative 4mg dexamethasone sodium phosphate as a submucosal injection (Group C), and preoperative 4 mg dexamethasone sodium phosphate as a submucosal injection plus postoperative 40mg bromelain every 6 hours for 6 days (Group D). Standardized surgical and analgesic protocols were adopted. Maximum interincisal distance and facial contours were measured at baseline and on postoperative days 2 and 7. Pain was measured objectively by counting the number of analgesic tablets required. Patient perception of the severity of symptoms was assessed with a follow-up questionnaire (PoSSe scale). Results: On postoperative day 2, there was a statistically significant reduction in facial edema in both Groups C and D compared with the control group, but no statistically significant differences were observed between Group B and the control group. At evaluation on postoperative day 7, Group D showed a statistically significant reduction in postoperative swelling compared with the control group. The combined use of bromelain and dexamethasone (Group D) induced a statistically significant reduction in the total number of analgesic tablets taken after surgery compared with the control group. The treatment groups had a limited, nonsignificant effect on trismus when compared with the control group. Conclusions: Bromelain used singly showed moderate anti-inflammatory efficacy, reducing postoperative swelling, albeit not to any significant extent compared with no drug administration. The combined use of bromelain and dexamethasone sodium phosphate yielded the best results in terms of control of postoperative discomfort.

  • The use of a collagenated porcine cortical lamina in the reconstruction of alveolar ridge defects. A clinical and histological study

    • BACKGROUND: Alveolar ridge reconstruction by means of resorbable and non-resorbable membranes has been proposed to increase the hard tissue volume in deficient sites. The purpose of this study was therefore to clinically and histologically evaluate the use of collagenated porcine bone lamina in case of horizontal and vertical bone augmentation procedures in conjunction with particulate porcine xenograft. METHODS: Overall, 8 partially edentulous patients (6 females and 2 males) with a mean age of 45 years requiring bone regeneration procedures to achieve a prosthetically driven implant placement were enrolled. All ridge defects were augmented using a xenogeneic cortical bone barrier in combination with particulate heterologous bone. Bone biopsies were collected during the re-entry procedure. RESULT S: A total of 15 implants were placed both simultaneously or in a staged approach in the augmented sites. No complications occurred during the rehabilitation. Histologically, the bone lamina was widely vascularized and integrated with the surrounding soft tissues and the native bone. The presence of osteoclastic lacunae suggested an active remodeling of the particulate graft and a gradual substitution with the newly formed bone. CONCLUSIONS: Alveolar reconstruction by means of the collagenated cortical lamina gave promising clinical and histological results. The rigidity and the slow resorption pattern allowed for the blood clot protection even in case of vertical defects, avoiding at the same time the re-entry surgery for its removal.
