  • Has It Come to This? : The Promises and Perils of Geoengineering On the Brink
  • 2020
  • Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Geoengineering is the deliberate and large-scale intervention in the Earth's climate system in an attempt to mitigate the adverse effects of global warming. Now that climate emergency is upon us, claims that geoengineering is inevitable are rapidly proliferating. How did we get into this situation where the most extreme path now seems a plausible development? Is it an accurate representation of where we are at? Who is this “we” who is talking? What options make it onto the table? Which are left out? Whom does geoengineering serve? Why is the ensemble of projects that goes by that name so salient, even though the community of researchers and advocates is remarkably small? These are some of the questions that the thinkers contributing to this volume are exploring from perspectives ranging from sociology and geography to ethics and indigenous studies. We set out this diverse collection of voices not as a monolithic, unified take on geoengineering, but as a place where creative thinkers, students, and interested environmental and social justice advocates can explore nuanced ideas in more than 240 characters.

  • An Evaluation of General-Purpose Static Analysis Tools on C/C++ Test Code
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Proc. - Euromicro Conf. Softw. Eng. Adv. Appl., SEAA. - : Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc.. - 9781665461528 ; , s. 133-140
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In recent years, maintaining test code quality has gained more attention due to increased automation and the growing focus on issues caused during this process. Test code may become long and complex, but maintaining its quality is mostly a manual process, that may not scale in big software projects. Moreover, bugs in test code may give a false impression about the correctness or performance of the production code. Static program analysis (SPA) tools are being used to maintain the quality of software projects nowadays. However, these tools are either not used to analyse test code, or any analysis results on the test code are suppressed. This is especially true since SPA tools are not tailored to generate precise warnings on test code. This paper investigates the use of SPA on test code by employing three state-of-the-art general-purpose static analysers on a curated set of projects used in the industry and a random sample of relatively popular and large open-source C/C++ projects. We have found a number of built-in code checking modules that can detect quality issues in the test code. However, these checkers need some tailoring to obtain relevant results. We observed design choices in test frameworks that raise noisy warnings in analysers and propose a set of augmentations to the checkers or the analysis framework to obtain precise warnings from static analysers.

  • Automated analysis of flakiness-mitigating delays
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Proceedings - 2020 IEEE/ACM 1st International Conference on Automation of Software Test, AST 2020. - New York, NY, USA : Association for Computing Machinery. - 9781450379571 ; , s. 81-84
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • During testing of parallel systems, which allow asynchronous communication, test flakiness is sometimes avoided by explicitly inserting delays in test code. The choice of delay approach can be a trade-off between short-term gain and long-term robustness. In this work, we present an approach for automatic detection and classification of delay insertions, with the goal of identifying those that could be made more robust. The approach has been implemented using an open-source compiler tooling framework and validated using test code from the telecom industry. © 2020 Association for Computing Machinery.

  • Static Flow Analysis of the Action Language for Foundational UML
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: 2018 IEEE 23RD INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON EMERGING TECHNOLOGIES AND FACTORY AUTOMATION (ETFA). - : IEEE. - 9781538671085 ; , s. 161-168
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • One of the major advantages of Model-Driven Engineering is the possibility to early assess crucial system properties, in order to identify issues that are easier and cheaper to solve at design level than at code level. An example of such a property is the timing behaviour of a real-time application, where an early indication that the timing constraints might not be met can help avoiding costly re-designs late in the development process. In this paper we provide a model-driven round-trip transformation chain for (i) applying a flow analysis to executable models described in terms of the Action Language for Foundational UML (Alf), and (ii) back-propagating analysis results to Alf models for further investigation. Alf models are transformed into the input format for an analysis tool that identifies flow facts, i. e., information about loop bounds and infeasible paths in the model. Flow facts can be used, for instance, when estimating the worst-case execution time for the analysed model. We evaluated the approach through a set of benchmark models of various size and complexity.

  • Remaining forests on the Central Highlands of Madagascar : Endemic and endangered aquatic beetle fauna uncovered
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Ecology and Evolution. - : John Wiley & Sons. - 2045-7758. ; 12:12
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Madagascar is known for its high endemism and as many as 90% of this unique diversity are forest-dwellers. Unfortunately, the forest cover of Madagascar is decreasing at an alarming rate. This decrease can also affect aquatic insects, but our knowledge on aquatic insect diversity and distribution on Madagascar are limited. Although the eastern rainforests are considered the most diverse, the Central Highlands of Madagascar also harbors unique microendemic fauna but has been less studied. Here, we analyze the aquatic Adephaga beetle fauna of three remaining protected forests of the Central Highlands. Diversity, abundance, and uniqueness are compared between and within natural forests and surrounding grasslands. At least 15 undescribed species were found, highlighting the Central Highlands as an important area for endemism. The natural forests and the surrounding grasslands differed significantly in species assemblages. Interestingly, the three remaining forests differed in their assemblages with the geographically more distant Manjakatompo Ankaratra having the most unique fauna but also the highest altitude span. By contrast, the species composition was similar between the peripheral zones of each of the three remaining forests. The similarity of the fauna in the peripheral open habitats illustrates how some local forest endemics are replaced with widespread generalists in degraded habitats. Our study shows that the remaining forests of the Central Highlands of Madagascar are important refuges of unique fauna at high risk of extinction.

  • Circulating vitamin D and breast cancer risk : an international pooling project of 17 cohorts
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: European Journal of Epidemiology. - : Springer Science+Business Media B.V.. - 0393-2990 .- 1573-7284. ; 38, s. 11-29
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Laboratory and animal research support a protective role for vitamin D in breast carcinogenesis, but epidemiologic studies have been inconclusive. To examine comprehensively the relationship of circulating 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] to subsequent breast cancer incidence, we harmonized and pooled participant-level data from 10 U.S. and 7 European prospective cohorts. Included were 10,484 invasive breast cancer cases and 12,953 matched controls. Median age (interdecile range) was 57 (42–68) years at blood collection and 63 (49–75) years at breast cancer diagnosis. Prediagnostic circulating 25(OH)D was either newly measured using a widely accepted immunoassay and laboratory or, if previously measured by the cohort, calibrated to this assay to permit using a common metric. Study-specific relative risks (RRs) for season-standardized 25(OH)D concentrations were estimated by conditional logistic regression and combined by random-effects models. Circulating 25(OH)D increased from a median of 22.6 nmol/L in consortium-wide decile 1 to 93.2 nmol/L in decile 10. Breast cancer risk in each decile was not statistically significantly different from risk in decile 5 in models adjusted for breast cancer risk factors, and no trend was apparent (P-trend = 0.64). Compared to women with sufficient 25(OH)D based on Institute of Medicine guidelines (50– < 62.5 nmol/L), RRs were not statistically significantly different at either low concentrations (< 20 nmol/L, 3% of controls) or high concentrations (100– < 125 nmol/L, 3% of controls; ≥ 125 nmol/L, 0.7% of controls). RR per 25 nmol/L increase in 25(OH)D was 0.99 [95% confidence intervaI (CI) 0.95–1.03]. Associations remained null across subgroups, including those defined by body mass index, physical activity, latitude, and season of blood collection. Although none of the associations by tumor characteristics reached statistical significance, suggestive inverse associations were seen for distant and triple negative tumors. Circulating 25(OH)D, comparably measured in 17 international cohorts and season-standardized, was not related to subsequent incidence of invasive breast cancer over a broad range in vitamin D status.
