  • Effects of a film-based parental intervention on vocabulary development in toddlers aged 18-21 months
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Proceedings from Fonetik 2011. - Stockholm. ; , s. 105-108
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • SPRINT is a language intervention project aimed to study the outcome of a parental home training program on children’s language development and future reading and writing skills. This study, which derives data from the SPRINT project, intended to examine the possible effects of a parental-based film intervention. It was conducted on toddlers aged 18-21 months from the Stockholm area with at least one parent who has Swedish as a first language. Parents of 78 children participated in the study and filled in 3 SECDI-w&s questionnaires rating their children's productive vocabulary. Children were randomized to either the intervention or the control group. Results indicated that the interventiongroup demonstrated significantly higher scores over time, F (2,78) = 5,192, p < .007. In the light of previous research it is concluded that this intervention contributes to an increase in productive vocabulary. However, the scores of the intervention group did not exceed the average range for Swedish children in the same age span. Furthermore the possible impact of parental education and thepresence of siblings on productive vocabulary was discussed.

  • EXPANDED VIEW ON THE CONCEPT OF INTERMODALITY
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: 8th NECTAR CONFERENCE, Las Palmas G.C. June 2-4, 2005.
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Intermodal research has to a large extent focused on the technical issues of intermodality and transport optimisation. While the focal point of the theoretical intermodal concept is on the transfer of load units between transport modes, practitioners acknowledge the transfer of information and responsibilities between involved actors as key issues. This research investigates the contradiction of viewpoints: on one hand, the goods flow perspective where flows are seen as continuous chains through nodes and links in a transport network, and on the other hand, the firm perspective with focus on the transport operators internal productivity and profitability. There is thus a conceptual limitation in the simplistic linear view of the theoretical intermodal concept, referring to intermodal transport chains as seamless, with regard to cooperation among actors in the network structure. As a consequence, a conflict of interests may occur between the two perspectives. The conclusions have been reached through two extensive case studies where findings have been categorised into three key areas that are essential in order to attain high performance in an intermodal assignment: interfaces, chain integration and resource utilisation. The key areas include both technical and organisational aspects, to reflect the characteristics of intermodality. Execution of an intermodal transport assignment relies on both the operators business strategies and the characteristics of their respective transport modes. The former relates to the efficiency of information transfer and the willingness to cooperate among the actors, whereas the latter refers to connectivity in terms of appropriate facilities and bridging of gaps between the modes concerning frequency, capacity and time. This paper focuses on the first issue and the objective is to broaden the view on intermodal transportation by bringing organisational and managerial aspects into consideration besides the pure technical description. There is thus a need of expanding the most widespread theoretical definition of intermodality in order to reflect the distinguishing characteristics of intermodal transportation. Thereby the theoretical description of the concept better reflects practice.

  • Navigating unchartered waters: Overcoming barriers to low-emission fuels in Swedish maritime cargo transport
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Energy Research and Social Science. - 2214-6296. ; 106
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The maritime transport sector is often considered hard to abate in the context of greenhouse gas emissions, and the adoption of low-emission marine fuels is slow. Low-emission marine fuels are essential to create a sustainable maritime sector, but to accelerate the speed of adoption, we must understand what hinders their use. This paper outlines the complexity of the marine fuel choice and describes the market landscape. Taking a bottom-up perspective, we investigate the stakeholders´ perspective on low-emission marine fuels. Through thematic analysis, barriers and drivers are analyzed for adopting low-emission marine fuels in Swedish maritime cargo transport, using primary qualitative data from 17 semi-structured interviews. The results confirm previously established barriers, such as fuel price, but expand on the current discourse by incorporating qualitative dimensions. We also identified five specific business models for low-emission marine fuel use. Shipping companies trust that investments in sustainable alternatives will eventually pay off. Despite this, the adoption is slow. The themes reveal a sector that wants to transform but often lacks drivers without well-developed legislation. By directing attention to these themes and the underlying complexities, we provide valuable insight to decision-makers and policymakers on what can be done to accelerate the share of low-emission marine fuels.

  • Reasons for physician-related variability in end-of-life decision-making in intensive care
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Acta Anaesthesiologica Scandinavica. - : Wiley. - 0001-5172 .- 1399-6576. ; 65:8, s. 1102-1108
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background There is increasing evidence that the individual physician is the main factor influencing variability in end-of-life decision-making in intensive care units. End-of-life decisions are complex and should be adapted to each patient. Physician-related variability is problematic as it may result in unequal assessments that affect patient outcomes. The primary aim of this study was to investigate factors contributing to physician-related variability in end-of-life decision-making. Method This is a qualitative substudy of a previously conducted study. In-depth thematic analysis of semistructured interviews with 19 critical care specialists from five different Swedish intensive care units was performed. Interviews took place between 1 February 2017 and 31 May 2017. Results Factors influencing physician-related variability consisted of different assessment of patient preferences, as well as intensivists' personality and values. Personality was expressed mainly through pace and determination in the decision-making process. Personal prejudices appeared in decisions, but few respondents had personally witnessed this. Avoidance of criticism and conflicts as well as individual strategies for emotional coping were other factors that influenced physician-related variability. Many respondents feared criticism for making their assessments, and the challenging nature of end-of-life decision-making lead to avoidance as well as emotional stress. Conclusion Variability in end-of-life decision-making is an important topic that needs further investigation. It is imperative that such variability be acknowledged and addressed in a more formal and transparent manner. The ethical issues faced by intensivists have recently been compounded by the devastating impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, demonstrating in profound terms the importance of the topic.
