  • The Characteristics of Excellent Designers - Findings from an Interview Study with Swedish Innovators
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the International Conference on Engineering Design, ICED. - 2220-4334 .- 2220-4342. - 9781904670711 ; 80:DS 80-08, s. 131-140
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Some designers are more successful than others. They have the ability to repeatedly generate new and innovative solutions to challenging problems. In this paper, we refer to designers who possess this level of skill as “excellent designers”. It would seem interesting to identify the characteristics of such individuals in order to better understand why they succeed while ordinary designer do not. However, there have been few published studies of excellent designers, and these studies have focused on one or a few individuals. In this paper, we account for a study of a larger group (15) of excellent designers. The aims were first to identify their particular set of knowledge, experience, working practices and personal characteristics and then to use the findings to generate proposals for how employers and educator can nurture excellent designers.

  • Evaluation of Refractory Metal Concentrations in Nano-Particulate Pressed-Powder Pellets Using LA-ICP-MS
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Minerals. - : MDPI AG. - 2075-163X. ; 12:7
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Whole-rock geochemical analysis is a standard method to measure the chemical composition of ores. Analysis of refractory ore metals such as Ta and W typically requires fused bead and acid digestion followed by inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry (ICP-AES) and inductively coupled mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Since these techniques are time-consuming and expensive, there is a demand for methods that can quantitatively measure low elemental concentration of refractory ore metals using a less expensive and simple approach. This paper evaluates preparation and analytical procedures developed to obtain whole-rock element concentrations of ore samples and mineral concentrates. It shows that the production of nano-particulate pressed-powder pellets followed by LA-ICP-MS analysis of W and Ta ores can be used to determine, within the error margin, the concentrations of the refractory metals W, Ta, Nb, and Sn compared to a reference values obtained by solution analysis. The results have implications for developing a commercially viable method for analysis of refractory elements to benefit mineral processing given the simplicity and resource-efficiency of the combined pressed pellet production and laser ablation analytical methodology.

  • Ten Years of CDIO - Experiences from a Long-Term Education Development Process
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 6th International CDIO Conference, Montreal, Canada.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The paper describes and analyses a long-term education development process – the CDIO-based reform of Chalmers University of Technology’s M.Sc. in Mechanical Engineering programme. The initial goals of the reform programme and the changes that it has lead to are reviewed. The results of various kinds of evaluations – CDIO self-evaluations, external evaluations, student and faculty views and costs – are reviewed. A number of critical success factors for sustainable educational development process are identified.

  • Water transport and absorption in pharmaceutical tablets – a numerical study
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Meccanica. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1572-9648 .- 0025-6455. ; 55:2, s. 421-433
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The quality of a coated pharmaceutical tablet can be strongly affected by the interactions of water droplets with the porous substrate during processes such as coating process. Three different mechanisms co-exist in the coating process: water spreading, absorption and evaporation. Disentangling the fundamental understanding of these phenomena can therefore be crucial for achieving a higher quality of the products (e.g. a longer shelf-life of the tablets) and for controlling the efficiency of the process. This paper aims to investigate the spreading and absorption mechanisms after droplet impingement on a tablet using a Lattice-Boltzmann methodology. Our numerical results (droplet height and spreading, penetration depth and absorbed volume) are in a good agreement with experimental data and numerical simulations available in the literature. In particular, the spreading phase is characterised by the capillary spreading time scale, as confirmed by previous studies. In contrast to previous studies, we find that the absorption process begins at times shorter than the capillary spreading time but with a different power-law in the absorbed volume. We explain this behaviour through a modified Washburn law that takes into account three-dimensional effects. Our data can be used as a benchmark to test novel mathematical models.

  • Computer support for systematic design applied in a cross-functional commercial concept development project
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of TMCE2002, Wuhan, China.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper, an empirical study aiming at exploring the practical applicability of a computer support for systematic design methodology is presented. During a six-month project a cross-functional product development team in the automotive industry was studied using an action-based research approach. The team applied a systematic design methodology and used a computer tool that provides support for systematic design. In this paper we set out our conclusions on the effects of the methodology and tool with regards to creativity, quality, time consumption, and the work process of the team. In addition, suggestions for future development of systematic design tools are listed. Finally, recommendations for the application of systematic design in industry are given.
