  • Do Algorithms Make Better - and Fairer - Investments Than Angel Investors?
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Harvard Business Review. - : Harvard Business Publishing. - 0017-8012.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Can an algorithm outperform the average angel investor? And if it can, does that also mean it will make less biased investments? Researchers put these questions to the test: They built an investing algorithm and put it head to head with 255 angel investors in a simulation, asking it to select the most promising investment opportunities among 623 deals from one of the largest European angel networks. The results? The algorithm significantly outperformed the average novice investor and even experienced investors who fell prey to cognitive biases, but was bested by the top tier of experienced investors, who could control for their own biases. While the algorithm may have made less biased choices when it came to the race and gender of the founders it picked, it also reflected systemic inequalities, and illustrated the limits of how algorithmic investing can be used to address deep social inequalities. Even so, the experiment offers a vision for how — and when — investors might deploy similar algorithmic aids in their investing, and how it might lead to better and fairer decisions.

  • In vitro membrane penetration of modified peptide nucleic acid (PNA)
  • 1999
  • Ingår i: Journal of Biomolecular Structure and Dynamics. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0739-1102 .- 1538-0254. ; 17:1, s. 33-40
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Efficient cellular uptake is crucial for the success of any drug directed towards targets inside cells. Peptide nucleic acid (PNA), a DNA analog with a promising potential as a gene-directed drug, has been shown to display slow membrane penetration in cell cultures. We here used liposomes as an in vitro model of cell membranes to investigate the effect on penetration of a PNA molecule colvalently modified with a lipophilic group, an adamantyl moiety. The adamantyl attachment was found to increase the membrane-penetration rate of PNA three-fold, as compared to corresponding unmodified PNA. From the penetration behaviour of a number of small and large molecules we could conclude that passive diffusion is the mechanism for liposome-membrane passage. Flow linear dichroism (LD) of the modified PNA in presence of rod-shaped micelles, together with octanol-water distribution experiments. showed that the adamantyl-modified PNA is amphiphilic; the driving force behind the observed increased membrane-penetration rate appears to be an accumulation of the PNA in the lipid double layer.

  • Accounting Knowledge in Innovative Firms – Direct Contacts with Auditors for Strategic Actions
  • 2015
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Managers’ use of auditors in decision processes are well known in the accounting literature but little is known on managers in innovative firms and their acquisition of accounting knowledge through direct contacts with auditors. We conducted a multiple embedded study of exploratory character based on 19 interviews with managers and auditors connected to six innovative firms. We show that managers in innovative firms apply informal management control in early phases and thus also rely to a high extent on external auditors for such purposes. Management acquisition of accounting knowledge may however stepwise contribute to a more formalized control system as management competence increase. This study suggests that competence based view may be useful for understanding the role of accounting and auditors.

  • Accounting knowledge in innovative firms - Direct contacts with external auditors for strategic actions
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Managerial and Financial Accounting. - Olney : InderScience Publishers. - 1753-6715 .- 1753-6723. ; 8:3-4, s. 209-229
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Managers’ use of auditors in decision processes is well known in the accounting literature, but little is known about owner-managers in innovative firms and their acquisition of accounting knowledge through direct contacts with external auditors. We conducted a multiple embedded study of exploratory character based on 21 interviews with owner-managers and external auditors connected to six innovative firms. We show that owner-managers in innovative firms apply informal management control in early phases of the innovation process and thus also rely heavily on external auditors for such purposes. However, management’s acquisition of accounting knowledge may contribute over time to the development of a more formalised control system as their competence increases. This study suggests that a competence-based view may be useful for understanding the role of accounting and external auditors in innovative firms’ management control systems. • Who should record surgical complications? : Results from a third-party assessment of complications after radical cystectomy
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian journal of urology. - : Informa Healthcare. - 2168-1805 .- 2168-1813. ; 53:5, s. 339-343
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Objective: In Sweden complications after radical cystectomy have been reported to the nationwide population-based Swedish Cystectomy Registry since 2011. Here, validation of the reporting was assessed in two healthcare regions.Materials and methods: Complications were ascertained from patient records by a third party not involved in the care delivered to 429 randomly selected patients from 949 who had undergone radical cystectomy since 2011 in four hospitals. Without knowledge of the outcome in the primary registration, post-operative complications within 90 days post-operatively were assessed by an independent review of patient charts, and the results were compared with the primary reports in the Swedish Cystectomy Registry. Results: The third-party assessment identified post-operative complications in 310 patients (72%). Low-grade complications (Clavien-Dindo I-II) were noted in 110 (26%) of the patients in the primary registration, but increased to 182 (42%) in the validation (p < 0.00001). High-grade complications (Clavien-Dindo III-V) were reported in 113 (26%) patients in the primary registration, but in 128 (30%) of the patients in the validation (p = 0.02). According to the third-party assessment, 18 patients (4%) had Clavien-Dindo grade IV complications and 12 (3%) died within 90 days of surgery (Clavien-Dindo grade V); corresponding values in the primary registration were 15 (3%) and 9 (2%), respectively. The readmission rate within 90 days increased from 27 to 32% in the validation (p < 0.00001).Conclusions: Compared with registry data, third-party assessment revealed more complications and readmissions after radical cystectomy. Hence such evaluation may improve the validity of reported complication data.
