    • Geochemical, mineralogical, micromorphological, microbiological, hydrochemical and hpdrological joint investigations were performed at two coniferous podzolic sites in the north of Sweden and at one in the south of Finland. Mycorrhizal fungi were found to create numerous pens (3-10-mu m diameter) in many weatherable mineral grains in the eluvial (E) horizon. During the growing season, identified low molecular weight (LMW) organic acids such as citric, shikimic, oxalic and fumaric acids comprised 0.5-5% of the DOC and 0.5-15% of the total acidity in soil solutions. Between 20% and 40% of the dissolved Al was bound to the identified LMW organic acids. Mineral dissolution via complexing LMW acids, probably exuded in part by the mycorrhiza hyphae, is likely to be a major weathering process in podzols. We found no evidence for a decreasing C/metal ratio of the migrating organo-metal complexes that could explain the precipitation of secondary Fe and AL in the illuvial (B) horizon. Instead, microbial degradation of organic ligands resulting in the release of ionic,Al and Fe to the soil solution may he an important process facilitating the formation of solid Al-SI-OH and Fe-OH phases in the podzol B horizon. However, within the B horizon transport as proto-imogilite (PI) sols might be possible. In the B horizon, the extractable,Al and Fe was predominantly inorganic. The large specific surface area (SSA) removable by oxalate extraction, the high point of zero charge salt effect (PZSE), the low cation exchange capacity (CEC) and the high sulphate exchange capacity (SEC), painted to the presence of short-range ordered variable charge phases. Imogolite type material (ITM) was indeed identified in all B horizons by IR spectroscopy and crystalline imogolite was found in the deep B horizon of one profile. Mossbauer spectroscopy indicated that Fe in the form of ferrihydrite was formed by intergrowth with an Al-Si-OH phase. The high amounts of Fe and Al transported from the O to the E horizon indicate that there could be an upward transport of these elements before they are leached to the B horizon. We hypothesize that the LMW Al complexes an transported by hyphae to the mor (O) layer, partly released and subsequently complexed by high molecular weight (HMW) acids.

  • Surface reactivity of poorly-ordered minerals in podzol B horizons

    • The surface reactivity of mineral soil horizons from three podzolised forest soils in Scandinavia was examined. The amount of accumulated C was low, between 1.8 and 2.3% in the top of the B horizons. Selective extractions in combination with infrared (IR) spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) indicated a predominance of poorly-ordered imogolite-type materials (ITM) in the oxalate extractable fraction in an examined B horizons. The presence of well-ordered imogolite was only indicated in the Nyanget B3 horizon. A large proportion of free Fe was removed by ammonium oxalate. Comparisons of Mossbauer spectra (both at room temperature and at 4.2 K) before and after treatment with ammonium oxalate showed that the oxalate treatment resulted in a removal of a (super)paramagnetic Fe3+ phase? probably ferrihydrite. A comparison of the Mossbauer Fe3+ parameters at room temperature and 4.2 K indicated a close intergrowth of a ferrihydrite-like oxide with a magnetically neutral matrix, e.g., allophane. The specific surface area (SSA) was determined by N-2 adsorption before and after treatment of the samples with acid ammonium oxalate. The loss of SSA after oxalate treatment was considerable in the B horizon where only between 3.8 to 13.38 of the original SSA remained after treatment. The point of zero charge salt effect (PZSE) increased with depth in the B horizon from between 4.4 and 5.1 in the upper horizons to between 5.7 and 7.7 in the lower part of the B horizon. The increased PZSE with depth paralleled a decrease in the ratio of pyrophosphate soluble C to oxalate soluble Fe + Al. The affinity for SO42-. a goad indicator of the presence of active surface hydroxyls, was measured by comparing the H+ buffering capacity of a sample titrated in 2.5 mM Na2SO4 with a sample titrated in 5 mh I NaNO3,. The buffering capacity of the soil in the Na2SO4, electrolyte was well correlated with the amount of oxalate minus pyrophosphate soluble Fe + Al (r(2) = 0.88). The sulphate exchange capacity was considerably higher than CEC, especially in lower parts of the B horizon. The calculated surface area of the oxalate soluble material (OSM) ranged between 74 and 289 m(2) g(-1) and the calculated surface site density of the same material ranged between 0.6 to 3.3 site nm(-2). It was concluded that the surface reactivity in the B horizons is dominated by the poorly-ordered variable-charge oxides resulting in a low capacity to retain cations but a high capacity for adsorption of weak acid anions like SO42- and organic acids.

    • We introduce a new model for the accretion and feedback of supermassive black hole (SMBH) binaries to the ketjucode, which enables us to resolve the evolution of SMBH binaries down to separations of tens of Schwarzschild radii in gas-rich galaxy mergers. Our subgrid binary accretion model extends the widely used Bondi-Hoyle-Lyttleton accretion into the binary phase and incorporates preferential mass accretion on to the secondary SMBH, which is motivated by results from small-scale hydrodynamical circumbinary disc simulations. We perform idealized gas-rich disc galaxy merger simulations using pure thermal or pure kinetic active galactic nuclei (AGNs) feedback. Our binary accretion model provides more physically motivated SMBH mass ratios, which are one of the key parameters for computing gravitational wave (GW) induced recoil velocities. The merger time-scales of our simulated SMBH binaries are in the range t(merge) similar to 10-400 Myr. Prograde in-plane equal-mass galaxy mergers lead to the shortest merger time-scales, as they experience the strongest starbursts, with the ensuing high stellar density resulting in a rapid SMBH coalescence. Compared to the thermal AGN feedback, the kinetic AGN feedback predicts longer merger time-scales and results in more core-like stellar profiles, as it is more effective in removing gas from the galaxy centre and quenching star formation. This suggests that the AGN feedback implementation plays a critical role in modelling SMBH coalescences. Our model will be useful for improving the modelling of SMBH mergers in gas-rich galaxies, the prime targets for the upcoming LISA GW observatory.

    • BACKGROUND: Several factors are involved in determining a child's need for special education (SE). Thus, the value of brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for subjects with learning and intellectual disabilities is uncertain. PURPOSE: To evaluate the usefulness of MRI in the diagnostic process of siblings with learning and intellectual disabilities and need for full-time SE. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Altogether, 119 siblings (mean age 11.9 years) from families in which two or more children attended/had previously attended full-time SE underwent prospective brain MRI. SE grouping included three levels, from specific learning disabilities (level 1) to global intellectual disabilities (level 3). Forty-three controls (level 0, mean age 12.0 years) attended mainstream education groups. Signal intensity and structural abnormalities were analyzed, and areas of the cerebrum, posterior fossa, corpus callosum, vermis and brain stem, and diameters of the corpus callosum were measured. In analyses, all area measurements were calculated in proportion to the total inner skull area. RESULTS: Abnormal finding in MRI was more common for siblings (n=62; 52%) in SE (58% for level 3; 49% for level 2; 35% for level 1) than for controls (n=13; 16%). The siblings showed enlarged supra- (P<0.001) and infratentorial (P=0.015) cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) spaces and mild corpus callosum abnormalities (P=0.003) compared to controls. Siblings in SE had smaller inner skull area than controls (P<0.001). Further, the relative area of the mesencephalon (P=0.027) and the diameter of the body of the corpus callosum (P=0.015) were significantly smaller than in controls. In binary logistic regression analysis, enlarged supratentorial CSF spaces increased the probability of SE (odds ratio 4.2; P=0.023). CONCLUSION: Subjects with learning and intellectual disabilities commonly have more MRI findings than controls. Enlarged supratentorial CSF spaces were a frequent finding in siblings in full-time SE.

    • Subjects attending full-time special education (SE) often have multifactorial background for their cognitive impairment, and brain MRI may show nonspecific changes. As voxel-based morphometry reveals regional volume differences, we applied this method to 119 subjects with cognitive impairments and familial need for full-time SE--graded into three levels from specific disorders of cognitive processes (level 1) to intellectual disability (IQ <70; level 3)--and to 43 age-matched controls attending mainstream education (level 0). Subjects in SE groups had smaller global brain white matter (WM), cerebrospinal fluid, and total brain volume than controls. Compared with controls, subjects with intellectual disabilities in SE level 3 showed greater regional gray matter volumes bilaterally in the ventral and dorsal anterior cingulate cortex and smaller regional gray matter volumes in the left thalamus and cerebellar hemisphere. Further, they had greater WM volume in the left frontoparietal region and smaller WM volumes in the posterior limbs of the internal capsules. Subjects in SE level 1 and 2 groups showed the same tendency, but the results were nonsignificant. In conclusion, compared with controls, subjects with intellectual disabilities showed in voxel-based morphometry analysis several regional brain alterations.

  • General Purpose Ray Tracing and Polarized Radiative Transfer in General Relativity

    • Ray tracing is a central tool for constructing mock observations of compact object emission and for comparing physical emission models with observations. We present ARCMANCER, a publicly available general ray-tracing and tensor algebra library, written in C++ and providing a Python interface. ARCMANCER supports Riemannian and semi-Riemannian spaces of any dimension and metric, and has novel features such as support for multiple simultaneous coordinate charts, embedded geometric shapes, local coordinate systems, and automatic parallel propagation. The ARCMANCER interface is extensively documented and user friendly. While these capabilities make the library well suited for a large variety of problems in numerical geometry, the main focus of this paper is in general relativistic polarized radiative transfer. The accuracy of the code is demonstrated in several code tests and in a comparison with GRTRANS, an existing ray-tracing code. We then use the library in several scenarios as a way to showcase the wide applicability of the code. We study a thin variable-geometry accretion disk model and find that polarization carries information of the inner disk opening angle. Next, we study rotating neutron stars and determine that to obtain polarized light curves at better than a similar to 1% level of accuracy, the rotation needs to be taken into account both in the spacetime metric and in the shape of the star. Finally, we investigate the observational signatures of an accreting black hole lensed by an orbiting black hole. We find that these systems exhibit a characteristic asymmetric twin-peak profile both in flux and polarization properties.
