  • First lasing and initial performance of the European UV/VUV storage ring FEL at ELETTRA
  • 2001
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Instruments and Methods in Physics Research, Section A: Accelerators, Spectrometers, Detectors and Associated Equipment. - 0168-9002. ; 475:1-3, s. 20-27
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • An overview of the European storage ring free electron laser (FEL) project was presented. The details of initial lasing at 350 nm and 220 nm ranges were also presented. The distinguising features of the project were the use of an optical klystron to reduce power loading on the mirrors, the use of sophisticated mirror chambers and the integration of the FEL on a low emittance synchrotron radiation facility.

  • European project to develop a UV/VUV free-electron laser facility on the ELETTRA storage ring
  • 1999
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Instruments and Methods in Physics Research, Section A: Accelerators, Spectrometers, Detectors and Associated Equipment. - 0168-9002. ; 429:1, s. 179-184
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Sincrotrone Trieste, collaborating with various institutions, has recently begun a 3-year project to develop a UV/VUV free-electron laser on the ELETTRA storage ring. The main features and novel technical aspects of the project are described, including the design of the optical cavity and undulator, the electron beam characteristics and a first assessment of the predicted laser performance. Preliminary calculations suggest that the combined effects of a higher quality, higher energy electron beam, together with the use of a helical undulator, should significantly enhance FEL performance levels, as compared to present day values.

  • Low Energy Availability Followed by Optimal Energy Availability Does Not Benefit Performance in Trained Females
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise. - : Lippincott Williams & Wilkins. - 0195-9131 .- 1530-0315. ; 56:5, s. 902-916
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose: Short periods of reduced energy availability are commonly undertaken by athletes to decrease body mass, possibly improve the power-to-mass ratio, and enhance physical performance. Our primary aim was to investigate the impact of 10 d of low energy availability (LEA) followed by 2 d of optimal energy availability (OEA) on physical performance parameters in trained females. Second, physiological markers at the whole-body and molecular level related to performance were evaluated. Methods: Thirty young trained eumenorrheic females were matched in pairs based on training history and randomized to a 10-d intervention period of LEA (25 kcal.fat-free mass (FFM)(-1).d(-1)) or OEA (50 kcal.FFM-1.d(-1)) along with supervised exercise training. Before the intervention, participants underwent a 5-d run-in period with OEA + supervised exercise training. After the LEA intervention, 2 d of recovery with OEA was completed. Participants underwent muscle biopsies, blood sampling, physical performance tests, body composition measurements, and resting metabolic rate measurements. A linear mixed model was used with group and time as fixed effects and subject as random effects. Results: Compared with OEA, LEA resulted in reduced body mass, muscle glycogen content, repeated sprint ability, 4-min time-trial performance, and rate of force development of the knee extensors (absolute values; P < 0.05). Two days of recovery restored 4-min time-trial performance and partly restored repeated sprint ability, but performance remained inferior to the OEA group. When the performance data were expressed relative to body mass, LEA did not enhance performance. Conclusions: Ten days of LEA resulted in impaired performance (absolute values), with concomitant reductions in muscle glycogen. Two days of recovery with OEA partially restored these impairments, although physical performance (absolute values) was still inferior to being in OEA. Our findings do not support the thesis that LEA giving rise to small reductions in body mass improves the power-to-mass ratio and thus increases physical performance.

  • Valence-band electronic structure of V2O3 : Identification of V and O bands
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Physical Review B. Condensed Matter and Materials Physics. - 1098-0121 .- 1550-235X. ; 80:15
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present a comprehensive study of the photon energy dependence of the valence band photoemission yield in the prototype Mott-Hubbard oxide V2O3. The analysis of our experimental results, covering an extended photon energy range (20-6000 eV) and combined with GW calculations, allows us to identify the nature of the orbitals contributing to the total spectral weight at different binding energies, and in particular to locate the V 4s states at about 8 eV binding energy. From this comparative analysis, we conclude that the intensity of the quasiparticle photoemission peak, observed close to the Fermi level in the paramagnetic metallic phase upon increasing photon energy, does not have a significant correlation with the intensity variation in the O 2p and V 3d yield, thus, confirming that bulk sensitivity is an essential requirement for the detection of this coherent low-energy excitation.

  • Evidence for Mn2+ ions at surfaces of La0. 7Sr 0.3MnO3 thin films
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Physical Review B. Condensed Matter and Materials Physics. - 1098-0121 .- 1550-235X. ; 71:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present a detailed investigation of the valence of manganese sites at the surface of colossal magnetoresistance La0.7Sr 0.3MnO3 (LSMO) thin films by x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS). The XAS Mn L-edge spectra of epitaxial LSMO films usually show a peak or shoulder at 640 eV. Differences in the intensity of this feature are commonly attributed to slight changes in the Mn3+/Mn4+ ratio or the crystal field strength. By comparison of different XAS spectra of LSMO thin films with the known multiplet structure of Mn2+ in a cubic crystal field, we assign this 640-eV feature to Mn2+ ions. XAS with increased surface sensitivity, combined with photon energy-dependent photoelectron spectroscopy measurements of the Mn(3s) exchange splitting, show that the Mn2+ species are mainly located at the surface. The Mn2+ scenario indicates significant modification of the LSMO surface with respect to the bulk properties that should be taken into account in all the charge and spin tunneling and injection experiments. © 2005 The American Physical Society.
