  • Charged-hadron production in pp, p plus Pb, Pb plus Pb, and Xe plus Xe collisions at √sNN=5 TeV with the ATLAS detector at the LHC
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Journal of High Energy Physics (JHEP). - : Springer Nature. - 1126-6708 .- 1029-8479. ; :7
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper presents measurements of charged-hadron spectra obtained in pp, p+Pb, and Pb+Pb collisions at √s or √sNN = 5.02 TeV, and in Xe+Xe collisions at √sNN = 5.44 TeV. The data recorded by the ATLAS detector at the LHC have total integrated luminosities of 25 pb−1, 28 nb−1, 0.50 nb−1, and 3 μb−1, respectively. The nuclear modification factors RpPb and RAA are obtained by comparing the spectra in heavy-ion and pp collisions in a wide range of charged-particle transverse momenta and pseudorapidity. The nuclear modification factor RpPb shows a moderate enhancement above unity with a maximum at pT ≈ 3 GeV; the enhancement is stronger in the Pb-going direction. The nuclear modification factors in both Pb+Pb and Xe+Xe collisions feature a significant, centrality-dependent suppression. They show a similar distinct pT-dependence with a local maximum at pT ≈ 2 GeV and a local minimum at pT ≈ 7 GeV. This dependence is more distinguishable in more central collisions. No significant |η|-dependence is found. A comprehensive comparison with several theoretical predictions is also provided. They typically describe RAA better in central collisions and in the pT range from about 10 to 100 GeV.

  • The Neutrophil Response Induced by an Agonist for Free Fatty Acid Receptor 2 (GPR43) Is Primed by Tumor Necrosis Factor Alpha and by Receptor Uncoupling from the Cytoskeleton but Attenuated by Tissue Recruitment
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Molecular and Cellular Biology. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0270-7306 .- 1098-5549. ; 36:20, s. 2583-2595
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Ligands with improved potency and selectivity for free fatty acid receptor 2 (FFA2R) have become available, and we here characterize the neutrophil responses induced by one such agonist (Cmp1) and one antagonist (CATPB). Cmp1 triggered an increase in the cytosolic concentration of Ca2+, and the neutrophils were then desensitized to Cmp1 and to acetate, a naturally occurring FFA2R agonist. The antagonist CATPB selectively inhibited responses induced by Cmp1 or acetate. The activated FFA2R induced superoxide anion secretion at a low level in naive blood neutrophils. This response was largely increased by tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-alpha) in a process associated with a recruitment of easily mobilizable granules, but neutrophils recruited to an aseptic inflammation in vivo were nonresponding. Superoxide production induced by Cmp1 was increased in latrunculin A-treated neutrophils, but no reactivation of desensitized FFA2R was induced by this drug, suggesting that the cytoskeleton is not directly involved in terminating the response. The functional and regulatory differences between the receptors that recognize short-chain fatty acids and formylated peptides, respectively, imply different roles of these receptors in the orchestration of inflammation and confirm the usefulness of a selective FFA2R agonist and antagonist as tools for the exploration of the precise role of the FFA2R.

  • Challenges for 5G transport networks
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: 2014 IEEE International Conference on Advanced Networks and Telecommunication Systems, ANTS 2014. - : IEEE conference proceedings. - 9781479958689
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • 5G mobile communications is seen as the enabler for the networked society where connectivity will be available anywhere and anytime to anyone and anything. The details of 5G are the subject to ongoing research and debate, mostly focused on understanding radio technologies that can enable the 5G vision. So far, less work has been dedicated to the challenges that 5G will pose to the transport network. This paper provides a first analysis of the key challenges to 5G transport in terms of capacity, flexibility and costs, for example. Different use cases are discussed as well as technology options and control plane concepts.

  • Measurement of the tt¯ production cross-section and lepton differential distributions in eμ dilepton events from pp collisions at √s=13TeV with the ATLAS detector
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: European Physical Journal C. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1434-6044 .- 1434-6052. ; 80:6
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The inclusive top quark pair (tt¯) production cross-section σtt¯ has been measured in proton–proton collisions at s=13TeV, using 36.1 fb- 1 of data collected in 2015–2016 by the ATLAS experiment at the LHC. Using events with an opposite-charge eμ pair and b-tagged jets, the cross-section is measured to be: σtt¯=826.4±3.6(stat)±11.5(syst)±15.7(lumi)±1.9(beam)pb,where the uncertainties reflect the limited size of the data sample, experimental and theoretical systematic effects, the integrated luminosity, and the LHC beam energy, giving a total uncertainty of 2.4%. The result is consistent with theoretical QCD calculations at next-to-next-to-leading order. It is used to determine the top quark pole mass via the dependence of the predicted cross-section on mtpole, giving mtpole=173.1-2.1+2.0GeV. It is also combined with measurements at s=7TeV and s=8TeV to derive ratios and double ratios of tt¯ and Z cross-sections at different energies. The same event sample is used to measure absolute and normalised differential cross-sections as functions of single-lepton and dilepton kinematic variables, and the results are compared with predictions from various Monte Carlo event generators. © 2020, CERN for the benefit of the ATLAS collaboration.

  • An Evaluation of Space Time Cube Representation of Spatiotemporal Patterns
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: IEEE TRANSACTIONS ON VISUALIZATION AND COMPUTER GRAPHICS. - 1077-2626. ; 15:4, s. 696-702
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Space time cube representation is an information visualization technique where spatiotemporal data points are mapped into a cube. Information visualization researchers have previously argued that space time cube representation is beneficial in revealing complex spatiotemporal patterns in a data set to users. The argument is based on the fact that both time and spatial information are displayed simultaneously to users, an effect difficult to achieve in other representations. However, to our knowledge the actual usefulness of space time cube representation in conveying complex spatiotemporal patterns to users has not been empirically validated. To fill this gap, we report on a between-subjects experiment comparing novice users error rates and response times when answering a set of questions using either space time cube or a baseline 2D representation. For some simple questions, the error rates were lower when using the baseline representation. For complex questions where the participants needed an overall understanding of the spatiotemporal structure of the data set, the space time cube representation resulted in on average twice as fast response times with no difference in error rates compared to the baseline. These results provide an empirical foundation for the hypothesis that space time cube representation benefits users analyzing complex spatiotemporal patterns.

  • Networked control challenges in collaborative road freight transport
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: European Journal of Control. - : European Control Association. - 0947-3580 .- 1435-5671. ; 30, s. 2-14
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Freight transport is of major importance for the European economy and is growing thanks to increasing global trade. About three quarters of inland freight transport in the European Union is on roads. It has the potential to go through a dramatic change over the next decades thanks to the recent development of technologies such as wireless communication, cloud computing, sensor devices, and vehicle electronics. They enable a new integrated goods transport system based on optimized logistics, real-time traffic information, vehicular communications, collaborative driving, and autonomous vehicles. In this paper, we discuss challenges in creating a more efficient and sustainable goods road transportation system and how some of them can be tackled with a networked control approach. In particular, we discuss a method to improve the efficiency of the transportation system by minimizing the number of empty transports needed to fulfill the assignments on a given road network. Assignments with overlapping route segments might lead to further improvements, as the formation of vehicle platoons yields reduced fuel consumption. For realistic scenarios, it is shown that such collaboration opportunities arise already with relatively few vehicles. The fuel-efficient formation and control of platoons is also discussed. Some of the presented methods have been tested on real vehicles in traffic. The paper shows experimental results on automatic formation of vehicle platoons on a Swedish highway. The influence of traffic density on the merge maneuver is illustrated. The results indicate that platoon coordination could be improved by support from appropriate traffic monitoring technologies.

  • When is it fuel eficient for a heavy duty vehicle to catch up with a platoon?
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: IFAC Proceedings Volumes (IFAC-PapersOnline). - 9783902823434 ; , s. 738-743
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Vehicle platooning has in recent years become an important research field for the vehicle industry. By establishing a platoon of heavy duty vehicles, the fuel consumption can be reduced for the follower vehicles due to the slipstream effect. However, as vehicles are scattered on the road driving by themselves, coordination amongst the vehicles is required. In this paper we study the problem of when it is beneficial for a heavy duty vehicle to drive faster in order to catch up and join a platoon. We derive a formula, based on at road and with no vehicle accelerations, to calculate if it is more fuel-eficient for a vehicle to drive faster and platoon or keep driving alone. Depending on the distance between the vehicles and the distance to the destination, the fuel savings vary. For a trip of 350 km, with a distance of 10km to the vehicle ahead, the fuel saving could be up to 7% if the follower vehicle decides to increase the speed from 80 km/h to 90 km/h in order to catch up and form a platoon, assuming an air drag reduction of 32% when platooning. Sensitivity analysis has shown that the speeds need to be relatively accurate in order to not give any false positive catch up decisions.

  • Simulation of GaAs Nanowire Growth and Crystal Structure
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Nano Letters. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 1530-6984 .- 1530-6992. ; 19:2, s. 1197-1203
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Growing GaAs nanowires with well-defined crystal structures is a challenging task, but may be required for the fabrication of future devices. In terms of crystal phase selection, the connection between theory and experiment is limited, leaving experimentalists with a trial and error approach to achieve the desired crystal structures. In this work, we present a modeling approach designed to provide the missing connection, combining classical nucleation theory, stochastic simulation, and mass transport through the seed particle. The main input parameters for the model are the flows of the growth species and the temperature of the process, giving the simulations the same flexibility as experimental growth. The output of the model can also be directly compared to experimental observables, such as crystal structure of each bilayer throughout the length of the nanowire and the composition of the seed particle. The model thus enables for observed experimental trends to be directly explored theoretically. Here, we use the model to simulate nanowire growth with varying As flows, and our results match experimental trends with a good agreement. By analyzing the data from our simulation, we find theoretical explanations for these experimental results, providing new insights into how the crystal structure is affected by the experimental parameters available for growth.

  • Measurements of jet observables sensitive to b -quark fragmentation in t t ¯ events at the LHC with the ATLAS detector
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Physical Review D. - : American Physical Society (APS). - 2470-0010 .- 2470-0029. ; 106:3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Several observables sensitive to the fragmentation of b quarks into b hadrons are measured using 36 fb-1 of s=13 TeV proton-proton collision data collected with the ATLAS detector at the LHC. Jets containing b hadrons are obtained from a sample of dileptonic tt¯ events, and the associated set of charged-particle tracks is separated into those from the primary pp interaction vertex and those from the displaced b-decay secondary vertex. This division is used to construct observables that characterize the longitudinal and transverse momentum distributions of the b hadron within the jet. The measurements have been corrected for detector effects and provide a test of heavy-quark-fragmentation modeling at the LHC in a system where the top-quark decay products are color connected to the proton beam remnants. The unfolded distributions are compared with the predictions of several modern Monte Carlo parton-shower generators and generator tunes, and a wide range of agreement with the data is observed, with p values varying from 5×10-4 to 0.98. These measurements complement similar measurements from e+e- collider experiments in which the b quarks originate from a color singlet Z/γ∗. © 2022 CERN.

  • Optical transport solutions for 5G fixed wireless access [Invited]
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Journal of Optical Communications and Networking. - : OPTICAL SOC AMER. - 1943-0620 .- 1943-0639. ; 9:9, s. D10-D18
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • With the advent of 5G, fixed wireless access (FWA) has emerged as a promising candidate for rolling out fixed broadband services. By means of radio simulations, we define a 5G radio deployment scenario for FWA that can meet the service requirements of future fixed broadband access. Different transport requirements imposed by different radio access network (RAN) split options are considered and a broad range of optical transport technologies/systems to support the FWA scenario is analyzed. For higher-layer RAN split options, we find that conventional 10G passive optical networks (XG-PONs) and coarse wavelength-division multiplexing (CWDM) technologies are the most cost effective. CWDM provides improved support for low-latency services while XG-PON facilitates future migration to fiber to the home. For lower-layer RAN splits, point-to-point (PtP) fiber or PtP-WDM is required. In the considered scenario, CWDM and PtP technologies are found to be the most cost effective.
