  • The role of demand for regional development – Green transformations in the food industries in Scania and Värmland
  • 2021
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Research on regional transformation typically sees regional economic change as an outcome of innovation and knowledge creation processes. The role of demand, however, has received little attention so far. In this paper, we summarize the empirical research findings from a research project on the role of demand in new regional industrial path development, focussing on the transformation of the food sector towards environmentally friendly production. The food industry is in need to renew its production system in order to cope with climate change and other environmental challenges. Further, it is a consumer-driven industry and characterized by complex and diverse demand conditions, which makes it a relevant case to study the role of demand. Theory building is based on accounts on regional industrial path development and regional innovation systems, as well as sociotechnical transitions. Empirically, we focus on two Swedish regions, Scania and Värmland, and data from a large-scale survey with all food-processing companies in the two regions as well as in-depth interviews with firm representatives and industry experts. The material is analysed in order to map and comprehend the role of altering demand conditions for regional economic transformation. We provide novel research on regional transformation of mature industries and seek to inform policies to promote industrial renewal via demand conditions.

  • The role of demand in regional industrial path development – examples from the Swedish periphery
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: European Planning Studies. - 0965-4313 .- 1469-5944. ; 31:9, s. 1975-1992
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper deals with the role that demand can play in regional industrial transformation, focusing on new industry formation in peripheral regions. As we argue in this paper, demand can be an important driver for industrial transformation, yet often underscored in the literature on regional development. Demand includes aspects related to general consumption patterns, to co-development between users and producers, to public procurement, or to norms and values among consumers. Theory building departs from accounts on new path development, were peripheral regions are typically seen as providing unfavourable conditions for industrial transformation, due to a weak organizational and institutional endowment. The empirical analysis focusses on two cases of new regional industrial path development in Värmland, a peripheral region in Sweden, namely locally processed dairy products, as well as microbreweries. The analysis is based on in interviews with regional entrepreneurs and industry stakeholders. We highlight the multiple roles that demand has played in the renewal and creation these two new regional industrial growth paths in the Swedish periphery.

  • Grasping transformative regional development - Exploring intersections between industrial paths and sustainability transitions
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Environment and Planning a-Economy and Space. - : SAGE Publications. - 0308-518X .- 1472-3409. ; 55:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A comprehensive perspective of transformative regional development is pertinent considering complex present and future challenges such as the climate crisis. Particularly in face of ecological boundaries which manifest themselves in limited resources and result in social disputes, a realistic grip on transformative regional development is of utmost importance. To advance this field, we propose a research agenda that draws on the debates on regional industrial path development and sustainability transitions. We define two core dimensions: interrelations between several industrial paths and interrelations between regions and between spatial scales. We argue that both dimensions need to be considered against ecological boundaries and as embedded in social dynamics. We combine specific questions on these interrelations into a research agenda.

  • Air quality impacts of a large waste fire in Stockholm, Sweden
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Atmospheric Environment. - : Elsevier BV. - 1352-2310 .- 1873-2844. ; 315
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Fires in waste facilities are a common occurrence. Since many waste facilities are located adjacent to densely populated areas, these fires could potentially expose large populations to the emitted pollutants. However, at the moment there are only few field studies investigating the impact of waste fire emissions on air quality since the unpredictable nature of these events makes them challenging to capture. This study investigated the impact of a large and persistent un-prescribed fire in a waste storage facility in Stockholm county, Sweden, on the local air quality of two residential areas in close proximity to the fire. In-situ measurements of particulate matter, black carbon and nitrogen oxide concentrations were conducted both during open burning and after the fire was fully covered. In addition, filter samples were collected for offline analysis of organic composition, metal content and toxicity. Strongly increased concentrations of PM10, PM2.5 and black carbon were found during the open burning period, especially when the wind was coming from the direction of the fire. In addition, elevated concentrations of particulate heavy metals and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons were observed in the air during the open burning period. These results show that waste fires can have a strong impact on the air quality of nearby residential areas.

  • Biomass performance and stability of 5-year outdoor microalgal cultivation for CO2 removal from cement flue gas
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Bioresource Technology Reports. - Oxford : Elsevier. - 2589-014X. ; 25, s. 1-11
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The study evaluated removal of industrial CO2 from cement flue gas using algal cultivation. Local polycultures were grown in an up-scaled outdoor photobioreactor over 5 years in northern Europe. Algal biomass was harvested 2–3 times per week and the closed panel system was re-filled with seawater amended with nutrients. Flue gas was fed to the photobioreactor circulatory system in one direction or re-circulated. Removal efficiency of CO2 averaged 9 % in non-recirculation and 17 % in re-circulation modes and reached 20–60 % under best cultivation conditions. Recovery of carbon into algal biomass reached up to 10 g m2d−1 in non-recirculation mode. Biomass performance was explained by circulation mode and shift of polyculture traits. Stability of biomass quality was shown over seasons, with higher relative content of protein in autumn. Toxic elements in biomass were below legal thresholds for upcycling. The study shows feasibility of algal solutions for conversion of waste, applied in temperate climate. © 2023 The Authors

  • Reconsidering actor roles in regional innovation systems : transformative industrial change in the forest-based bioeconomy
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Regional studies. - : Taylor & Francis. - 0034-3404 .- 1360-0591. ; 57:9, s. 1636-1648
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper reconsiders the roles of actors in regional innovation systems in the context of transformative industrial change. Empirically, it draws on evidence from the Värmland region of Sweden, where regional innovation system actors, with partial funding from the Swedish Innovation Agency, are striving to build a bioeconomy upon the traditional forest-related industries. The main findings include that transformative industrial change adds a variety of responsibilities to regional actors, including the provision of change legitimacy, influencing the industry’s innovation directionality and achieving social acceptance for change. A combined perspective on sociotechnical transitions and path development in regional innovation systems theoretically informs the case.

  • The scope of regional innovation policy to realize transformative change - a case study of the chemicals industry in western Sweden
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: European Planning Studies. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0965-4313 .- 1469-5944. ; 28:12, s. 2409-2427
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Economic geography and innovation studies are increasingly asking how regional industrial development paths develop. This paper addresses the scope of regional innovation policy to influence transformative change in regional industries, such as that needed to cope with grand societal challenges including climate change. We take a cross-disciplinary perspective using the regional innovation system framework, which is focused on innovation-based regional development, and complement this with insights from the sociotechnical transitions literature and its conceptualizations of sociotechnical regimes and niches. Empirically, we study the case of the chemicals industry in the Gothenburg-Stenungsund region, Sweden's largest basic chemicals industry cluster. Shifting from discussion to action appears challenging for this regional industry, despite advances in technology development, ongoing co-operation between the region's public and private sectors and its ambition to become an international leader in the production of sustainable chemistry products by 2030. Using this case, we present a broader view of path development, one that includes under-addressed policy approaches attempting to create new sociotechnical alignments that require co-evolving changes across technologies, infrastructures, regulatory frameworks and other societal dimensions, both within and beyond the regional context.

  • Functional Diversity Facilitates Stability Under Environmental Changes in an Outdoor Microalgal Cultivation System
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Frontiers in Bioengineering and Biotechnology. - : Frontiers Media S.A.. - 2296-4185. ; 9
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Functionally uniform monocultures have remained the paradigm in microalgal cultivation despite the apparent challenges to avoid invasions by other microorganisms. A mixed microbial consortium approach has the potential to optimize and maintain biomass production despite of seasonal changes and to be more resilient toward contaminations. Here we present a 3-year outdoor production of mixed consortia of locally adapted microalgae and bacteria in cold temperate latitude. Microalgal consortia were cultivated in flat panel photobioreactors using brackish Baltic Sea water and CO2 from a cement factory (Degerhamn, Cementa AB, Heidelberg Cement Group) as a sustainable CO2 source. To evaluate the ability of the microbial consortia to maintain stable biomass production while exposed to seasonal changes in both light and temperature, we tracked changes in the microbial community using molecular methods (16S and 18S rDNA amplicon sequencing) and monitored the biomass production and quality (lipid, protein, and carbohydrate content) over 3 years. Despite changes in environmental conditions, the mixed consortia maintained stable biomass production by alternating between two different predominant green microalgae (Monoraphidium and Mychonastes) with complementary tolerance to temperature. The bacterial population was few taxa co-occured over time and the composition did not have any connection to the shifts in microalgal taxa. We propose that a locally adapted and mixed microalgal consortia, with complementary traits, can be useful for optimizing yield of commercial scale microalgal cultivation.
