  • The multiple roles of demand in new regional industrial path development : A conceptual analysis
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Environment and planning A. - London, UK : Sage Publications. - 0308-518X .- 1472-3409. ; 51:8, s. 1741-1757
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper contributes to the literature on new regional industrial path development by highlighting the multiple roles that demand can play in regional development. We develop a conceptual framework relating different roles of demand to different types of new path development. Based on the literature on regional development, we differentiate between the role of demand as anonymous consumer, sophisticated buyer, active co-developer, public procurer and norm and value setter. These roles influence different types of new path development, including path extension, path upgrading, path importation, path diversification and path creation. New path development can be triggered by changing norms and values in the society (e.g. environmental concerns and the growing demand for cleaner technologies), public procurement for innovation (governments demand new products or services and thereby steer economic development) or by users modifying existing products or developing novel solutions that are not yet on the market (e.g. user innovations). The various roles of demand, as well as its effect on new regional industrial path development, depend on the geographical context. We argue that taking a nuanced view towards demand will add a novel dimension to the debate on new path development in regions.

  • The role of demand for regional development – Green transformations in the food industries in Scania and Värmland
  • 2021
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Research on regional transformation typically sees regional economic change as an outcome of innovation and knowledge creation processes. The role of demand, however, has received little attention so far. In this paper, we summarize the empirical research findings from a research project on the role of demand in new regional industrial path development, focussing on the transformation of the food sector towards environmentally friendly production. The food industry is in need to renew its production system in order to cope with climate change and other environmental challenges. Further, it is a consumer-driven industry and characterized by complex and diverse demand conditions, which makes it a relevant case to study the role of demand. Theory building is based on accounts on regional industrial path development and regional innovation systems, as well as sociotechnical transitions. Empirically, we focus on two Swedish regions, Scania and Värmland, and data from a large-scale survey with all food-processing companies in the two regions as well as in-depth interviews with firm representatives and industry experts. The material is analysed in order to map and comprehend the role of altering demand conditions for regional economic transformation. We provide novel research on regional transformation of mature industries and seek to inform policies to promote industrial renewal via demand conditions.

  • The role of demand in regional industrial path development – examples from the Swedish periphery
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: European Planning Studies. - 0965-4313 .- 1469-5944. ; 31:9, s. 1975-1992
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper deals with the role that demand can play in regional industrial transformation, focusing on new industry formation in peripheral regions. As we argue in this paper, demand can be an important driver for industrial transformation, yet often underscored in the literature on regional development. Demand includes aspects related to general consumption patterns, to co-development between users and producers, to public procurement, or to norms and values among consumers. Theory building departs from accounts on new path development, were peripheral regions are typically seen as providing unfavourable conditions for industrial transformation, due to a weak organizational and institutional endowment. The empirical analysis focusses on two cases of new regional industrial path development in Värmland, a peripheral region in Sweden, namely locally processed dairy products, as well as microbreweries. The analysis is based on in interviews with regional entrepreneurs and industry stakeholders. We highlight the multiple roles that demand has played in the renewal and creation these two new regional industrial growth paths in the Swedish periphery.

  • The virtual is reality! On physical and virtual space in software firms’ knowledge formation
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Entrepreneurship and Regional Development. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0898-5626 .- 1464-5114. ; 31:9-10, s. 669-682
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • To understand how knowledge is created and exchanged, it is necessary to unwrap the role played by the physical and virtual spaces. The extant research offers interesting findings when it comes to the relationships among regional, institutional and organizational characteristics, innovation and firms’ abilities to link up to global knowledge sources. A focus on the role of informal and low-cost mechanisms, both regional and global, has extended our understanding of their role in knowledge formation. However, the physical space has dominated this literature to the detriment of the virtual space. The inclusion of the virtual space, both as an interaction space and as a different and complementary dimension, makes it possible to gain new insights into knowledge formation in a digitalizing world. Based on in-depth interviews with small- and medium-sized software companies in two urban agglomerations in Norway and Sweden, this paper explores the use of physical and virtual spaces. The findings show that these spaces interact and mutually influence each other. The world is not ‘flattening’ due to ongoing digitalization; moreover, urban agglomerations are still important places in which these spaces are optimized and unified.

  • When regional meets global: exploring the nature of global innovation networks in the video game industry in Southern Sweden
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Entrepreneurship and Regional Development. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0898-5626 .- 1464-5114. ; 33:1-2, s. 131-146
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • © 2020, © 2020 The Author(s). Published by Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group. For firms in symbolic (creative) industries, the region is usually seen as the main arena for knowledge sourcing and exchange. Why and how these firms use global innovation networks remains however poorly understood. This paper draws on in-depth interviews with firm representatives and network data collected through a survey of video game developers in southern Sweden. Video game development is a typical example of a symbolic industry, encompassing the development of non-tangible and symbol-intensive products and services. In recent years, this industry has advanced from a niche sector into a global mass market. Understanding how the hybrid character of the industry–with strong symbolic cultural roots but also a significant global engagement–affects the geography of innovation networks is the focus of this paper. The analysis reveals that knowledge sourcing and exchange take place likewise on the regional and global scale, but for different purposes and through different mechanisms. It also shows that not all variance in network engagement can be explained by differences in industrial knowledge bases or regional innovation systems. In contrast, the target market and the nature and geography of demand are important explanatory factors.

  • Weaving sustainability: Asset modification and green path development in Norway’s outdoor textile industry
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Norwegian Journal of Geography. - 0029-1951 .- 1502-5292. ; 77:5, s. 269-280
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The article contributes to the literature on industrial path development through its focus on asset modification for green path development in the Norwegian outdoor textile industry. The authors drew on the concepts of green path development and asset modification to develop a theoretical framework that describes green industrial restructuring as a process by which firms build on various firm-level and system-level assets that are altered through different asset modification modes, which in turn leads to different green path development outcomes. The framework was applied in a study of the greening of the Norwegian outdoor textile industry. A case study was based on data from interviews with firm leaders and industry experts. The findings show that all modes of asset modification are at play in the ongoing greening process. However, asset upgrading and asset creation play a central role. Furthermore, firm-level assets in combination with system-level assets at national and supranational scales are particularly important inputs to the greening of the industry. The authors conclude that in contrast to findings from previous research on industrial path development, regional-level assets play a minor role, which can be explained by the lack of geographical clustering and local embeddedness of the industry.

  • New Avenues for Regional Innovation Systems and Policy
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: New Avenues for Regional Innovation Systems - Theoretical Advances, Empirical Cases and Policy Lessons. - Cham : Springer. - 9783319716602 ; , s. 1-19
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Regional innovation systems (RISs) have received increasing interest from researchers and policy makers over the past three decades. The interest is driven partly by advances in theoretical analyses, partly by empirical studies of well-functioning, successful regional economies, partly by the growing interest in innovation as a source of competitive advantage, and partly by the need for new policies to stimulate job growth and lower regional inequalities. This chapter presents the approach of the book to further improve regional innovation studies. The chapter introduces the content of the three parts of the book; (i) theoretical advances on RIS research, (ii) empirical cases of RIS development, and (iii) discussion of regional innovation policy approaches. The chapter summarises main results from existing work within these three parts and points to how the book explores new avenues for research on RISs and sheds light on issues that have thus far received little attention.

  • Linking content and technology: on the geography of innovation networks in the Bergen media cluster
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Industry and Innovation. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1366-2716 .- 1469-8390. ; 25:10, s. 966-89
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • © 2017 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group This paper deals with the geography of innovation networks and analyses combinatorial knowledge dynamics from a single cluster perspective. Addressing firms in the media cluster in Bergen, Norway, we examine how and from where companies acquire and combine different types of knowledge for their innovation activities. The empirical analysis, which is based on structured interviews with 22 media companies, identifies two main types of cluster firms: media content providers that rely heavily on symbolic knowledge and media technology providers that draw mostly on synthetic knowledge. Even though they draw on different knowledge bases, the two types of firms are strongly interlinked in their innovation activities and source knowledge from each other. Furthermore, we find that synthetic firms constitute a gateway to the regional R & D system and that the region acts as key arena for the combination of dissimilar knowledge bases.
