  • Juvenile and mature wood of Abies pinsapoBoissie : sorption and thermodynamic properties
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Wood Science and Technology. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0043-7719 .- 1432-5225. ; 49:4, s. 725-738
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • For industrial processes, it is important to study the hygroscopicity and thermodynamic properties of juvenile and mature wood. Samples of Abies pinsapo Boiss. collected in the natural areas of the species in Spain were used to study these properties in both types of wood. The equilibrium moisture contents were obtained, and the 15, 35 and 50 °C isotherms were plotted following the Guggenheim–Anderson–Boer–Dent model. The thermodynamic parameters were calculated using the integration method of the Clausius–Clapeyron equation. Chemical analyses, infrared spectra and X-ray diffractograms were applied to assess chemical modifications and possible changes in the cell wall structure. The chemical composition of the mature wood shows a decrease in the lignin and hemicelluloses content and an increase in the extracts and α-cellulose. The sorption isotherms for the three temperatures studied are higher in the mature wood than in the juvenile wood. Causes of this include the higher content of α-cellulose, the higher crystallinity index and the shorter crystallite length in the mature wood. No difference was found between the juvenile and mature wood in relation to the point of inflexion where the multilayer starts to predominate over the monolayer (approximately 30 %). In terms of the thermodynamic properties, the heat involved is greater in desorption than in adsorption, and more heat is involved in the mature wood than in the juvenile wood.

  • Fractionation and characterization of lignin-carbohydrate complexes (LCCs) from eucalyptus fibers
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Holzforschung. - 0018-3830 .- 1437-434X. ; 65:1, s. 43-50
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The effect of milling time on the structure of lignin was investigated by analyzing the quantity and molecular size distribution of thioacidolysis products obtained from wood and pulp of eucalypt (Eucalyptus globulus). After milling, the ability of three solvent systems was determined to completely dissolve the wood or pulp meal. It was found that a mixture of DMSO and 50% aqueous tetrabutylammonium hydroxide was superior to either dimethylacetamide-LiCl or DMSO-tetrabutylammonium fluoride as solvent. By applying the minimum milling time required for complete dissolution, structurally unaltered wood or pulp could be further separated into lignin-carbohydrate fractions. These were analyzed by thioacidolysis. From eucalypt pulp, two different lignin-carbohydrate fractions were obtained, one glucan-and one xylan-enriched fraction, with the latter having more syringyl units in its lignin moieties. The developed solvent system seems to be universal because spruce and flax fibers and pulps could also be dissolved in it after milling.

  • Effects of residual lignin and heteropolysaccharides on the bioconversion of softwood lignocellulose nanofibrils after SO2-ethanol-water fractionation
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Bioresource Technology. - : Elsevier. - 0960-8524 .- 1873-2976. ; 161, s. 55-62
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The amount of residual lignin and hemicelluloses in softwood fibers was systematically varied by SO2-ethanol–water fractionation for integrated biorefinery with nanomaterial and biofuel production. On the basis of their low energy demand in mechanical processing, the fibers were deconstructed to lignocellulose nanofibrils (LCNF) and used as substrate for bioconversion. The effect of LCNF composition on saccharification via multicomponent enzymes was investigated at different loadings. LCNF digestibility was compared with the enzyme activity measured with a quartz crystal microbalance. LCNF hydrolysis rate gradually decreased with lignin and hemicellulose concentration, both of which limited enzyme accessibility. Enzyme inhibition resulted from non-productive binding of proteins onto lignin. Near complete LCNF hydrolysis was achieved, even at high lignin and hemicellulose content. Sugar yields for LCNF were higher than those for precursor SEW fibers, highlighting the benefits of high surface area in LCNF.
