  • The Seventeenth Data Release of the Sloan Digital Sky Surveys : Complete Release of MaNGA, MaStar, and APOGEE-2 Data

    • This paper documents the seventeenth data release (DR17) from the Sloan Digital Sky Surveys; the fifth and final release from the fourth phase (SDSS-IV). DR17 contains the complete release of the Mapping Nearby Galaxies at Apache Point Observatory (MaNGA) survey, which reached its goal of surveying over 10,000 nearby galaxies. The complete release of the MaNGA Stellar Library accompanies this data, providing observations of almost 30,000 stars through the MaNGA instrument during bright time. DR17 also contains the complete release of the Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment 2 survey that publicly releases infrared spectra of over 650,000 stars. The main sample from the Extended Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (eBOSS), as well as the subsurvey Time Domain Spectroscopic Survey data were fully released in DR16. New single-fiber optical spectroscopy released in DR17 is from the SPectroscipic IDentification of ERosita Survey subsurvey and the eBOSS-RM program. Along with the primary data sets, DR17 includes 25 new or updated value-added catalogs. This paper concludes the release of SDSS-IV survey data. SDSS continues into its fifth phase with observations already underway for the Milky Way Mapper, Local Volume Mapper, and Black Hole Mapper surveys.

  • Energy Saving Approaches for Video Streaming on Smartphone based on QoE Modeling

    • In this paper, we study the influence of video stalling on QoE. We provide QoE models that are obtained in realistic scenarios on the smartphone, and provide energy-saving approaches for smartphone by leveraging the proposed QoE models in relation to energy. Results show that approximately 5J is saved in a 3 minutes video clip with an acceptable Mean Opinion Score (MOS) level when the video frames are skipped. If the video frames are not skipped, then it is suggested to avoid freezes during a video stream as the freezes highly increase the energy waste on the smartphones.

    • During recent years, there has been an increasing interest in the potential opportunities that can be attained with promoting Smart Cities; a concept that can be reached based on Information and Communication Technology (ICT). The Smart Cities concept is considered achievable by horizontal integration of a number of vertical industries in order to empower sustainability and improvements on quality of life for citizens. At the same time, it is worth noting that within the existing Smart Cities experiments, the offered services are user-centric and ensuring only required Quality of Service (QoS), which is not enough. Then, the challenge here is to evaluate, design and standardize new solutions oriented not only to ensure high performance with respect to the node mobility and the energy consumption but also to guarantee high levels of Quality of Experience (QoE) perceived by the end-user. This paper intends to provide an initial research on how QoE service provision will impact the development of smart city services. In order to do that, authors aim to identify which Smart City services may be impact and in which way for QoE service provision. Aligned with the same objective, business analysis for QoE service provision is introduced with the intention of identify recurring patterns that could be used in the different Smart City services considered.

    • Current wireless networks have no knowledge on the type and characteristics of the specific mobile services and contents they are providing (they are agnostic). On the other hand, associated to richer content and more advanced devices, improvement of Quality of Experience (QoE) levels perceived by each user looks as one of the main goals of the different actors in the telecommunication's ecosystem. In this respect, network awareness of the transferred content types and their quality requirements can be important to deliver them fulfilling user requirements while optimizing the utilization of network resources. In this paper, we explore the effect of including semantic knowledge in the radio resource management (RRM) schemes of cellular systems as a way to reach this balance for video streaming service. To make this possible, we propose a number of semantic-aware RRM schemes using information about the video playback's current status, and investigate their performances based on the reduction of the total time of interruptions (TTI) perceived by users when a video streaming content is played. The achieved results are compared to those of the standard agnostic scheme implemented in the cellular networks. The outcomes show that incorporating semantic-aware RRM schemes, more users can receive the content provided by a network within a tolerable level of TTI, while the number of users receiving High Definition (HD) videos can be increased, which in general terms might reduce the investment in infrastructure to fulfill users' requirements.

    • Mobile operators face a scenario characterised by new challenges such as growing data consumption, a slowdown in subscriber growth and reduced revenues due to the success of OTT providers. To remain competitive, mobile operators must offer affordable services and think on strategies to retain current customers.Quality of Experience (QoE) is a well-established methodology for measuring and understanding the overall level of customer satisfaction with a service and has been presented as a way to improve telecommunication services. Even though QoE can be used to solve problems such as customer loyalty and optimisation of network resources in mobile networks, there is a great lack of knowledge on how mobile operators can take advantage of QoE and its potential benefits.This thesis explores the incorporation of QoE in mobile networks to improve their service offering from a technical, regulatory and business perspective.The technical level focuses on the definition of the mechanism to integrate QoE in the operation of mobile networks. The second part of this study has been focused on the regulatory framework on Net Neutrality. Finally,the third part of this thesis focuses on the identification of potential business scenarios and models based on the incorporation of QoE in mobile networks. An important conclusion is that due to the nature of the challenges faced by the mobile industry, a QoE analysis cannot be limited to a technical discussion. A technical solution can be the first step to the first step to overcoming industry challenges. However, it is important that a technical decision comes along with an informed analysis of the regulatory conditions and the business implications of the proposed solution. On the other hand, mobile operators require new methods that integrate technical, market and business considerations to improve their service offer. A method analysed in this dissertation is a Customer Experience Management (CEM) platform. Given the technical, regulatory and business factors covered in this thesis, a CEM platform can be used by mobile operators to make a better use of QoE in their business operation.

    • With the development of mobile networks, customer needs and behaviours have changed. Mobile communications means so much more than simple voice communication; there is now mobile Internet with web surfing, videophone, streaming media, and micro blogging. The objective of network optimization has gradually shifted from enhancing network performance to improve quality of experience (QoE). Therefore, assessing and optimizing QoE is the trend for optimizing future mobile networks. Today, users want reliable access for their content, wherever they go in the network. To deliver the best possible experience to mobile broadband subscribers, operators need new ways to assess performance that will enable them to build and manage their networks in the most efficient way. The new paradigmatic eco system (user-interfacenetwork- content) requires novel and disruptive end-to-end considerations in order to enable and sustain the next generation of services and user experience. Thus, the extraordinary adoption of mobile connectivity by end users, and the need for optimized bandwidth management network resource, on the one hand, and the growing interest for good quality content delivery/consumption, is boosting the creation of new network solutions.

    • Mobile network operators (MNOs) face a future characterised with new challenges, such as growing data consumption, a slowdown in subscriber growth and reduced revenues due to the success of over-the-top providers. MNOs must offer affordable services and provide innovative strategies to retain current customers. Quality of experience (QoE) is a well-established methodology for measuring the overall level of customer satisfaction and has also been presented as a way to improve telecommunication services. However, there is still a lack of knowledge on how the MNOs can take advantage of QoE and its potential benefits. In this paper, we explored the implications of the incorporation of QoE feedback in mobile networks at the business level. The analysis shows that value-added offers of differentiated and personalised services can be seen as alternatives to generate new revenue streams in the mobile service market.

    • This paper first traces the historic evolution of the Quality of Experience (QoE) concept, and then connects common points between the study of user experience as practiced within Human Computer Interaction (HCI) disciplines and recent efforts to understand how user perception can be incorporated into the definition and management of resources in the area of (ICT). After an analysis of the history of QoE and an examination of its current role in HCI, some research challenges are proposed that open doors to future research projects.

    • This paper summarizes some of the initial research findings obtained in the SERMON project, funded by Wireless@KTH. The main focus of this paper is on video streaming transmission and the quantification of how much can be gained, in terms of user satisfaction and network resource utilization, by exploiting this semantic knowledge at network level. For this purpose, different QoE-centric RRM strategies are proposed and their performances evaluated in respect to a “classical” agnostic scheme, in a scenario where users have different QoE requirements for different content types and as a function of the device screen resolution during a live video streaming transmission.

    • In this paper semantic-aware model for radio resource management in wireless networks is introduced and studied through simulation. By semantic-awareness, the network can selectively manage the radio resource allocation based on the evaluation of transferred content, and its associated processing, and prioritize users that are close to experience interruptions, in order to improve the wireless resource utilization and the user’s Quality of Experience (QoE). Different radio resource management (RRM) strategies are proposed and investigated, considering buffer capacity at the terminals and the experience of the users in time while watching a video and waiting for resource allocation. The simulation results show that the users can reduce the total duration, frequency and length of the interruptions during a playback by applying semantic-awareness in the radio resource allocation, which might affect positively user’s QoE.
