    • Energy distributions of slow electrons (0-10 eV) emitted by thin layers of NaCl, KBr, CsBr, and CsI irradiated by monochromatic XUV photons with various energies in the interval of 50-300 eV are measured. The contributions of slow secondaries, hot secondaries and primary photoelectrons are obtained. It is shown that the higher the absorption coefficient for incident photons, the stronger the contribution of hot secondaries. The relationship between their contribution and the electron-phonon scattering process is discussed.

    • Energy distributions of slow electrons (0 to 10eV) emitted by thin layers of NaCl and KBr irradiated by monochromatic XUV photons with various energies in the interval of 50 to 300 eV are measured. For all cases the photoelectron spectrum starts with an intense peak of slow secondaries and has a hot-secondary structure at the energies 1 to 5 eV. The smaller the photon absorption depth, the stronger is this structure. An attempt is made to reproduce such a behaviour of spectra by a Monte Carlo simulation of electron-electron and electron-phonon scattering sequences induced in solids by XUV photon absorption. It appears that for high-energy ( > 2 to 3 eV) conduction electrons the electron-phonon scattering is mainly due to acoustic phonons.

    • Inherited KIF1B loss-of-function mutations in neuroblastomas and pheochromocytomas implicate the kinesin KIF1B as a 1p36.2 tumor suppressor. However, the mechanism of tumor suppression is unknown. We found that KIF1B isoform β (KIF1Bβ) interacts with RNA helicase A (DHX9), causing nuclear accumulation of DHX9, followed by subsequent induction of the proapoptotic XIAP-associated factor 1 (XAF1) and, consequently, apoptosis. Pheochromocytoma and neuroblastoma arise from neural crest progenitors that compete for growth factors such as nerve growth factor (NGF) during development. KIF1Bβ is required for developmental apoptosis induced by competition for NGF. We show that DHX9 is induced by and required for apoptosis stimulated by NGF deprivation. Moreover, neuroblastomas with chromosomal deletion of 1p36 exhibit loss of KIF1Bβ expression and impaired DHX9 nuclear localization, implicating the loss of DHX9 nuclear activity in neuroblastoma pathogenesis. SIGNIFICANCE: KIF1Bβ has neuroblastoma tumor-suppressor properties and promotes and requires nuclear-localized DHX9 for its apoptotic function by activating XAF1 expression. Loss of KIF1Bβ alters subcellular localization of DHX9 and diminishes NGF dependence of sympathetic neurons, leading to reduced culling of neural progenitors, and, therefore, might predispose to tumor formation.

    • The lifetimes of the terms 3p2P, 3d2D, 4s2S, 4p2P, 4d2D, 4f2F, 5g2G, 6g2G, 6h2H, 7h2H, 7i2I and 8k2K in sodiumlike sulfur, S VI, have been determined using the beam-foil excitation technique. Most of the decay curves were analyzed by means of the ANDC method which corrects for cascading in a very detailed way. Accurate results were thereby obtained which show that an excellent agreement exists between experimental and theoretical values. Some previously noted disagreements between the results of beam-foil experiments and theoretical investigations are explained as being due to less accurate analyses of the experimental data.
