  • Philosophie im Konjunktiv : Nichtidentität als Ort der Möglichkeit des Utopischen in der negativen Dialektik Theodor W. Adornos
  • 2010
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This study "Philosophie im Konjunktiv. Nichtidentität als Ort der Möglichkeit des Utopischen in der negativen Dialektik Theodor W. Adornos" (Subjunctive Philosophy. Nonidentity as the Place for the Possibility of the Utopian in the Negative Dialectics of Theodor W. Adorno) deals with Adorno’s utopian thinking and asks on what it depends and on what it is founded. Moreover, the study asks the question wherein the possibility of fundamental societal change can be found and on what it can be founded. This study develops an answer to these questions through the analysis of the concepts of the nonidentity and the nonidentical – central concepts in Negative Dialectics –, which in the theory of Adorno constitute a place at which thinking and human beings are not fully absorbed by and integrated in philosophical and scientific systems or in the structure of society. Within the nonidentical the subsuming identities of philosophy and society are broken up. Therefore, the possibility of the utopian appears in this break of the identical. Here, the emancipation of the nonidentical could be realized: an emancipation, however, which is made possible in the nonidentical. The utopian thinking and the possibility of the utopian on the one hand, and nonidentity and the nonidentical on the other hand, are – this is the main claim of the study – inseparable. In developing this answer the study also tries to solve a certain problem in the discussion of Adorno’s philosophy, namely the difficulty in connecting the critical dimensions of his thinking - which are dominating his work and directed against the tradition of philosophy (and science) and capitalist society - with its utopian motives, through which he is calling for change in different ways. Finally, it is argued that Adornos’s thinking, which attempts to realize the utopian and to transcend reality on the basis of nonidentity, must be understood as a subjunctive philosophy.

  • Theology beyond Representation : Foucault, Deleuze and the Phantasms of Theological Thinking
  • 2012
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Theology beyond Representation explores the theological opportunities embedded in Michel Foucault’s and Gilles Deleuze’s critique of Christian thinking and of what they regard as a Christian and oppressive logic of representation. Foucault’s and Deleuze’s thoughts on representation are currently discussed in many fields neighbouring theology (e.g. by feminist Karen Barad, Literary theorist Claire Colebrook), but despite the fact that Foucault and Deleuze address some of the most frequently debated issues in contemporary theology, their thoughts on representation have not yet been fully examined in theology. This study offers such an exploration by searching out what new perspectives, forces and notions are brought to light when the critique of representation and the post-representational perspectives in Foucault and Deleuze are allowed to work within theology. It enacts encounters, for example, with the theological contributions of British Radical Orthodox theologian Graham Ward and North American radical theologian Thomas Altizer. The book finally suggests that contemporary theology should perhaps not leave its metaphysics behind but understand its task differently. From a post-representational perspective, the Christian God and inherited Christian dogma may be considered actual, affecting our world in reality – our account of meaning as well as our bodies, actions and politics – yet they are actual and real because they are repeated as such and used as such. The Christian truths are, in short, regarded as phantasms. In consequence, a “post-representational theology” would note the force of form, dogma, truths, authorities, eternal gestures and church buildings, but it would not believe in their final power. It would believe in representation, in its effects and its force, but it would also believe in the possibility of moving beyond its expressions, while also believing that expression already moves beyond representation.Such a perspective, the book argues, could open up a playful yet serious form of post-Christian resistance: To repeat, parody and play with whatever comes to the fore as eternal, or as the truth of concrete experience – both when reading and when doing theology – in order to make room negatively for those realities, actual but unknown, unthinkable yet possible, that no language could ever capture.

  • Folkkyrkans kropp : Einar Billings ecklesiologi i postsekulär belysning
  • 2012
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This dissertation offers an analysis of the influential perception of folk-church ecclesiology that is associated with the theologian and Bishop Einar Billing (1871-1939). The term folk church has had a massive impact on the ecclesiological discussion within the Church of Sweden over the last 100 years. It has become one of the most significant concepts in many of the theological self-descriptions in the Church of Sweden. But how does the central position that the term folk church has gained in the theological language of the church, affect the various ways in which the church actually is embodied? The theoretical framework for the analysis is gained from contemporary postsecular theology, with the aim to illuminate some of the consequences of the folk-church ecclesiology, regarding the social embodiment of the church. The folk church as a social body is therefore studied in relationship to other social bodies, such as the modern nation state. The postsecular perspective is mainly inspired by the contemporary theologians William Cavanaugh and Graham Ward.

  • 2004
