Between being and longing : Young former refugees’ experiences of place attachment and multiple belongings

- This thesis focuses on young former refugees’ lived experiences of and reflections on processes of place attachment and negotiation of belonging in Norway. The analysis draws on a postcolonial understanding of migration and belonging, and is inspired by post-structuralism and critical phenomenology. The thesis analyses belonging from two perspectives: as a personal relationship to people and places, and as relationally produced and negotiated through social discourses and boundary-making practices in everyday life. The thesis is based on fieldwork conducted with forty former refugee youths, using multiple methods such as in-depth interviews, participant observation, activity diaries, and auto-photography. In addition, teachers, municipal representatives, peer students, siblings, and parents contributed to the knowledge presented in the thesis. Article I explores how the youths’ translocal networks and practices contributed to the process of attaching to a new place, arguing that it is necessary to understand how ideas of both roots and routes are entangled in the young former refugees’ sense of belonging. Article II discusses the spatial organizing of newly arrived students in school and its social consequences. It is argued that the “foreigner” category is socially constructed through a racialization process in which space, skin colour, and language are key components, and that this process is reinforced in school. Article III explores how generic discourses rendering Muslims “the other” in Norway affect young Muslim girls’ experiences of belonging in different geographical and social spaces. The article highlights how the navigation of belonging that the girls undertook entailed constant work that they could not escape due to their visibility as Muslim girls. Article IV explores place attachment and belonging with a focus on everyday habits and routines, and shows that the youths simultaneously drew on shared knowledge from their social networks and on embodied knowledge gained through the habitual use of place to perform belonging. Overall, the thesis provides a nuanced understanding of young former refugees’ belonging that is both multi-sited and multi-layered.

- Utgångspunkten i vårt forskningsprojekt Kreativa och entreprenöriella utkanter (Creative and entrepreneurial edges) är att geografer och andra akademiker kanske i alltför hög utsträckning har fokuserat på städer, urbana miljöer och tätbebyggda infrastrukturer. Detta för att förklara fenomen som relaterar till kreativa processer och aktiviteter. Framförallt har man lyft fram den närhet och interaktion som kan uppstå i städer och som kan ge fördelar i processer som har att göra med nya idéer och kreativitet. Motsatt har forskningen inte i tillräcklig utsträckning uppmärksammat vare sig de aktiviteter som de facto sker i periferin, samt de fördelar som existerar i mer perifera lokaliseringar. Det finns således anledning att ifrågasätta en förenklad och binär uppdelning. I det forskningsprojekt vi arbetar med är utgångspunkten att även om centrum är viktigt för allehanda kreativa processer så kan vi inte bortse från perifera miljöers roll och positiva effekter på kreativa processer. Syftet är således att undersöka idén om att kreativitet och entreprenörskap i utkanten och på perifera platser är betydelsefull och hållbar och att vi bör förhålla oss till idén om att outsiders ofta omformulerar våra frågeställningar och föreställningar och förändrar vårt sätt att se. För att nyansera förståelsen kring myter som är relaterade till konstnärskap, kreativa processer och perifera platser har vi valt att empiriskt fokusera på konstnärer i Värmland och Skogen mellan oss. Vi antar ett relationellt perspektiv på platser och processer. Det ger oss utrymme att utmana en ortodox uppdelning mellan centrum och periferi och på så vis frångå synen på dessa som en dualism, ett antingen-eller. Vi hävdar att det att vara perifer varken betyder att man är isolerad eller hänvisad till en lägre grad av professionellt arbete eller sämre kreativa möjligheter. Snarare bör vi se centrum-periferi som ett kontinuum där ett nätverk av aktörer (individer, organisationer eller objekt) agerar på olika avstånd. Denna studie visar att ekonomiska faktorer och balansen mellan arbete och privatliv är två väsentliga orsaker till att konstnärer väljer att bosätta sig och vara aktiva i periferin. Samtidigt omfamnar konstnärerna de kreativa möjligheter som uppstår av att befinna sig i utkanten och de skapar aktivt lokala och externa nätverksrelationer och plattformar. För konstnärer och kulturarbetare är en binär rumslig indelning således inte en relevant utgångspunkt. Istället behövs en mer nyanserad förståelse av relationella geografier som stödjer både landsbygden som kreativ plats och de individuella konstnärernas kreativa karriärer. I synnerhet ifrågasätter vi antagandet om att urban kreativitet är kollektiv och att landsbygdens kreativitet är individuell och skulle sakna fördelarna med närhet och agglomeration. Det är just i arbetet med att skapa infrastruktur för konst och kreativitet på landsbygden som det kollektiva är centralt. Där bidrar professionaliteten både i det konstnärliga arbetet i sig och i tillgången till professionella nätverk till att flera konstnärer kan dra nytta av detta och utveckla sitt konstnärskap. Vi hävdar således att dessa konstnärer inte väljer mellan den sociala staden och den isolerade landsbygden. De kombinerar fördelarna med de bägge genom translokala processer och nätverk.

- Research has repeatedly shown that many young people of minority background refer to themselves as «foreigners». This article examines how the (re)production of the categories «foreigner» and «Norwegian» is played out in school, and if this can be understood as an expression of racialization. Here, racialization is understood as a process including discourse and social practice in which tacit ideas of race naturalize the link between whiteness and Norwegianness. The study is based on participant observation and interviews both with newly arrived students and with minority students who have grown up in Norway, and their teachers. The article explores how separate language-training classes might affect the minority students’ understanding of themselves. Drawing on Sara Ahmed’s definition of «the stranger», I examine situations in which minority students’ experience being positioned as «the Other». The analysis shows that the minority students measure themselves against a normative «Norwegianness» where whiteness and the pure Norwegian language are prominent. In the article this is interpreted as one reason for why the minority students turn to each other for confirmation and support. The article argues that the category «foreigner» is produced through a racialization process where spatial separation, skin color and language are central components. The article concludes that young people’s use of the categories «foreigner» and «Norwegian» also needs to be understood in light of such racialization processes, and not only as something they do amongst themselves.

- The Nordic welfare model is built on the logic of equality and equal access to welfare goods. However, the rollback of the state from rural areas in the Nordic countries has been significant, and unequal access to essential welfare services such as schools, infrastructure, and healthcare is pronounced. The relationship between the provision of welfare services and refugee settlement, including integration measures and policy, is the departure point when investigating and explaining possibilities to provide the prerequisites needed to achieve ‘full economic, social, cultural, and political participation’, the goal of the prevailing European Commission Action Plan on Integration and Inclusion 2021-2027. While refugees are often placed and encouraged to settle in rural areas, these areas may not always be well equipped to fulfil the population’s needs in the first place. The chapter builds on a qualitative case study from the Swedish rural region of Dalarna, and the results are analysed within the framework of rural justice.
