  • Empirically derived psychosocial states among adolescents diagnosed with cancer during the acute and extended phase of survival
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Annals of Oncology. - : Elsevier BV. - 0923-7534 .- 1569-8041. ; 20:10, s. 1722-1727
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Patients and methods: Participants completed the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale and two subscales, Vitality and Mental Health, in the SF-36 4-8 weeks (T1) (n = 61), 6 (T2) (n = 57), 12 (T3) (n = 50), and 18 (T4) months (n = 48) after diagnosis. I-State as Object of Analysis was used to identify a finite set of states based on three dimensions. Cluster analysis was carried out using Ward's method. Results: Five states were obtained: psychosocial dysfunction (state A) and poor (B), incomplete (C), good (D), and excellent (E) psychosocial function. At T1, more adolescents than expected by chance were in states A (P < 0.05) and C (P < 0.01) and fewer in states D (P < 0.05) and E (P < 0.001). At T4, more adolescents than expected by chance were in state E (P < 0.001) and fewer in state C (P < 0.05). Female gender and being in late adolescence when diagnosed is related to worse psychosocial function. Conclusion: The findings provide support for subgroups of adolescents whose level of vitality, mental health, and anxiety differ during the acute and extended phase of survival of cancer. Clinical interventions tailored to the level of impairment as determined by the clusters may result in better psychosocial outcomes.

  • Positive and negative consequences with regard to cancer during adolescence : Experiences two years after diagnosis
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Psycho-Oncology. - : Wiley. - 1057-9249 .- 1099-1611. ; 16:11, s. 1003-1009
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • OBJECTIVES: The purpose was to explore negative and positive consequences of cancer during adolescence experienced two years after diagnosis. METHODS: Two years after diagnosis 38 persons, 15-21 years old, were asked two questions over the telephone: What, if anything, is bad for you due to the cancer disease? and What, if anything, is good for you due to the cancer disease? The answers were analysed by content analysis. RESULTS: Four categories of negative experiences were identified: a problematic body; unpleasant thoughts and feelings; outside the circle of friends; and difficulties with schoolwork. Six categories of positive experiences were identified: a more positive view of life; good self-esteem; knowledge and experience with regard to disease and hospital care; good relations; broader perspectives; and material gains. CONCLUSIONS: Two years after diagnosis those struck by cancer during adolescence experience not only a number of negative, but also positive, consequences of the cancer disease and its treatment.

  • Development of health-related quality of life and symptoms of anxiety and depression among persons diagnosed with cancer during adolescence : a 10-year follow-up study
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Psycho-Oncology. - : Wiley. - 1057-9249 .- 1099-1611. ; 25:5, s. 582-589
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Objective: The main aim was to investigate the development of health-related quality of life (HRQOL) and symptoms of anxiety and depression in a cohort diagnosed with cancer during adolescence from shortly after up to 10 years after diagnosis. Methods: Participants (n = 61) completed the SF-36 and the HADS shortly; six, 12, and 18 months; and two, three, four, and 10 years (n = 28) after diagnosis. Polynomial change trajectories were used to model development. Results: Polynomial change trajectories showed an initial increase which abated over time into a decrease which abated over time for the SF-36 subscales Mental Health and Vitality; an initial decline which abated over time into an increase for HADS anxiety; and an initial decline which abated over time into an increase which abated over time for HADS depression. The SF-36 mental component summary showed no change from two to 10 years after diagnosis whereas the SF-36 physical component summary showed an increase from two years after diagnosis which declined over time. Ten years after diagnosis 29% reported possible anxiety. Conclusions: Development of HRQOL and symptoms of anxiety and depression appears to be nonlinear among persons diagnosed with cancer during adolescence. Well into permanent survivorship an increase in symptoms of anxiety is shown and approximately a third of the participants report possible anxiety. The findings indicate the need for: studies designed to pinpoint the times of highest psychological risk, clinical follow-up focusing on psychological problems, and development of effective psychological interventions for survivors of adolescent cancer

  • Collaborative Interpretation of Researcher-Generated Photo-Elicitation Findings : Insights From Women With Lived Experience of Homelessness
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Qualitative Health Research. - : Sage Publications. - 1049-7323 .- 1552-7557. ; 34:7, s. 676-690
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Interviews with individuals experiencing homelessness can be challenging for various reasons, including mental and physical health issues, substance use, and negative experiences with authority figures. Researchers have used photos to facilitate communication and empower participants during data collection. We analyzed data from a previous study to explore the use of researcher-generated photos during interviews about health with 13 women experiencing homelessness. Conversation analysis revealed clear patterns regarding the use of the photos during the interviews. The photos were referred to 118 times over the total interview length, 6 hours and 23 minutes, with the interviewer making 62% of the referrals and the women accounting for 38%. Fifty-nine percent of the referrals occurred within the first 5 minutes of the interviews. The women used the photos to trigger associations and emotions, to describe photo content, or in a minor role during the interview. Interpretations from an advisory board of six women with lived experiences of homelessness suggested that the photos did not engage participants as intended, highlighting the importance of considering participants’ perspectives when designing photo-elicitation methods. The feedback also provided valuable insights into interview locations and incentives in research that may have influenced the women’s willingness to use the photos. This study emphasizes the importance of understanding the complexity of choosing researcher-generated photos in interviews with underserved, hard-to-reach populations.

  • Convective heating in a medieval church : Effects of air-to-air heat pumps on air movements, particle deposition and temperature distribution
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 11th International Conference on Air Distribution in Rooms (Roomvent) 2009, Busan, Korea.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In Europe many historic buildings use direct electric heating. Air-to-air heat pumps are an interesting alternative, in particular for conservation heating. However, the convective heating may accelerate soiling of walls and artefacts by increasing the velocity and turbulence. The objective of the present paper is to discuss the general problem, the methodology for studying air motions and temperature distribution, and to present the results from a case study where air-to-air heat pumps and bench heaters were used for heating in a medieval church. The temperatures, velocities and humidity in the church have been measured for four different heating modes. The present study does not indicate any major disadvantages of using heat pumps for background heating in stone churches of the studied kind. More detailed long term studies are needed to ascertain the effects over time.
