- De arkeologiska undersökningarna vid gården Änge i Buttle socken, Gotland, år 2014 ingick i utbildningen för arkeologistudenter (totalt ca 93 st) vid Institutionen för arkeologi och antik historia, Uppsala universitet, och genomfördes inom ramen för kurserna Fältkurs i arkeologi I (5AR133) och Arkeologisk fältkurs (5AR212), perioderna 2014-04-28--2014-06-05 och 201407-28--2014-08-29. Årets undersökning ska ses som en direkt fortsättning av de tidigare arkeologiska utgrävningarna vid platsen åren 2009 och 2013 (se Andreeff 2012, Andreeff, Melander & Bakunic Fridén 2014, Andreeff & Potter 2014). Fältstudier av bildstensplatsen vid Buttle Änge inleddes år 2009 som en del av Alexander Andreeffs avhandlingsprojekt Stones and People: Viking Age Picture Stones from the Island of Gotland vid Institutionen för historiska studier, Göteborgs universitet. Resultat och tolkning utifrån undersökningarna vid Buttle Änge och den avslutade utgrävningen vid bildstensplatsen Fröjel Stenstugu (Andreeff 2012; Andreeff & Bakunic Fridén 2014, Andreeff, Melander & Bakunic Fridén 2014, Andreeff & Potter 2014) utgör en mycket viktig del av avhandlingens forskningsmaterial (Andreeff under publicering). Fältsäsongen 2013 genomfördes inom ramen för sommarkursen Arkeologisk fältkurs och Fältkurs i arkeologi II under hösten för Uppsala universitet. Undersökningarna fortsatte då vid bildstensplatsen och därtill påbörjades utgrävningar av tre icke tidigare fornminnesregistrerade anläggningar i området. Årets undersökning ingår i det nu initierade projektet Bildstensplatser och stengrundshus: Järnålder i det gotländska inlandet. Kulturlandskapet kring Buttle Änge visar på en lång kontinuitet med lämningar efter bosättning, åkerbruk, metallhantverk, gravar och rituellt liv från romersk järnålder till och med historisk tid. Undersökningarna tidigare år var främst inriktade på området kring bildstensplatsen och odlingsrösen. Fältsäsongen 2014 fokuserade på fyra teman tillika områden vid Buttle Änge; depositioner och aktiviteter vid bildstenarna, spåren av metallhantering norr om stensättningen, om en del av odlingsrösena egentligen utgör fornlämningar, samt att undersöka bebyggelse och aktiviteter i och kring stengrundshusen i änget.

- In this report the field documentation and the results from the 2015 archaeological investigations at Nygårds 1:28, Buttle parish on the farm Buttle Änge, Gotland, Sweden, are presented. The excavations in 2015 are a continuation of surveys from 2009 and 2013-2014 (see Andreeff, Melander & Bakunic Fridén 2014; Andreeff & Melander 2015) conducted as field courses in archaeology by Uppsala University. The campaign is a part of Andreeff’s research projects Stones and People: Viking Age Picture stones from the Island of Gotland and Picture stone sites and Stone house foundations: Iron Age in the Gotlandic Inland. The field investigations were led by Alexander Andreeff, Paul Wallin and Alexander Sjöstrand, Uppsala University.

- In the preface to his and Gerda Boëthius' book on Gotland's Iron Age settlement sites, John Nihlén described the stone wall house sites and 'adjoining field walls' as Sweden's Pompeii. The description vividly illustrate how Nihlén perceived the preservation status of the stone wall houses. Nihlén seems to have thought that the stone wall houses had been covered by a 'protecting layer of volcanic dust' and laid untouched since the day they had been abandoned. Even though most of Nihlén's theories on the Iron Age settlement sites of Gotland has since been dismissed, the 'Pompeii idea' has seemingly been passed on to later generations of researchers (as for instance in the work of Carlsson 1979 and Cassel 1998). This conception is however far from accurate. Field inventories on Central and Eastern Gotland, as well as cartographical studies and the result of the excavations at Änge, Buttle parish has clearly demonstrated how the stone wall house sites has been damaged and affected by cultivation and other activities during Early Modern and Modern times. To further investigate and document the impact and extent of destructive elements on stone wall house sites, special attention was given to the topic during the 2017 excavation campaign at Änge. The survey was divided into three different sections; 1. Excavation and analysis of the construction and chronology for so called 'field walls' or ancient enclosures [sw. stensträngar]; 2.To evaluate the hypothesis that 'impediments' (marked objects in fields) on historical maps represent ancient remains, particularly stone wall houses; and finally 3. to define the spacial extent of the Iron Age settlement site, to be able to conclude which of the historical features that can be labelled as 'destructive elements'. The fieldwork section of the project was carried out within the borders of the research projects Climate Change and Social Competition: re-approaching the Archaeology of Gotland AD 300-900 and Houses and Hierarchies: From Roman to Viking influences on Gotland Island in the Baltic sea, and conducted in July and August of 2017 in conjunction with Uppsala university campus Gotland's summer-semester fieldwork-course for archaeology students. The excavation documentation and the preliminary results of the survey is presented in this report.

- This report presents the documentation and summarises the preliminary results from the 2016 excavation season at Buttle Änge, Buttle parish, Gotland. The surveys of 2016 was conducted as a direct continuation of the 2014 and 2015 excavations, focusing on the Iron Age settlement site surrounding Raä Buttle 43:1-5. Five larger trenches and eight test pits, covering an area of a 160 square meters, was opened and excavated down to sterile soil. The excavations were partaken between the 26 th of April and 27th of May 2016. The fieldwork was led by Alexander Andreeff, Alexander Sjöstrand, Paul Wallin (all Uppsala University) and Victor Niels Love Melander (The Australian National University).
