Beginners Read Aloud : High versus Low Linguistic Levels in Swedish Beginners' Oral Reading

- The aims of this thesis were to examine the utilisation of various linguistic levels in the oral reading of running texts among Swedish beginning readers, and specifically to question the supposedly predominant role of lower (i.e. sub-lexical) linguistic levels by also examining possible evidence of the utilisation of information at the syntactic or semantic levels, as well as textual context. The investigation is based on a corpus constructed from the oral reading of running texts and includes a number of studies using both quantitative and qualitative error analyses.The analyses confirm that other linguistic levels than the sub-lexical have an impact on reading. This was shown both in the linguistic acceptability of errors and the extent to which errors were corrected depending on linguistic acceptability. Although the natural point of departure seemed to be the graphemic level, analyses revealed that graphemic complexity or word transparency alone could not explain error frequencies. In quite a few cases, qualitative analyses revealed, for instance, that higher linguistic levels or knowledge of the world could explain both why words did and did not result in reading errors. However, phonological quantity appeared to be a major difficulty throughout the study, which is clearly related to the graphemic or phonological level.Some differences regarding the developmental perspective were observed. One study indicated that the readers might develop stepwise regarding their utilisation of various linguistic levels, in the sense that they appeared to rely mainly on lower linguistic levels early in reading development. Later they seemed to be dependent on higher linguistic levels, and ultimately they seemed to be sensitive to, rather than dependent on, higher linguistic levels.An interesting result was that the readers seemed to use different strategies for different kinds of words throughout the investigation, using a direct decoding strategy for frequent words, but using a letter-by-letter decoding strategy for less frequent or graphemically complex words.

- The care for persons with dementia is involving a diversity of social and health care interventions. The systems for dementia care and services vary across European countries. However, there is a lack of knowledge about the complex system for dementia care on a European level. A more comprehensive view of dementia care provision in Europe may provide knowledge that can serve as a basis for the development of best practice in the care for persons with dementia. The objective of the study is to describe and analyse the European health and social care and welfare systems, advocacy and informal caregiver support systems for people with dementia. The presentation will focus on how data will be collected and how collaboration within the consortium will be performed.A consortium including members from eight European countries is invited in the study. The research teams that will collect the data represent Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Netherlands, Spain, Sweden and United Kingdom. The Swedish research team coordinates the study. The consortium members will review a suggested terminology for overall issues regarding the care system for people with dementia as well as national directives and nancing. Further, data will comprise the terminology regarding descriptions of stages in the dementia trajectory, types of care provided and care providers. From this process, an overall agreement on the meaning of relevant terminology is going to be obtained, and this will make it possible to describe the health and social care system for older persons with dementia in a European perspective. A developed template will be used to collect data regarding health and social care and welfare system from each country included in the study.

Health and safety Aspects of Solid Biomass Storage, Transportation and Feeding

- This publication focuses on the health and safety issues of the supply chain of solid biofuels with the objective to highlight commonly used mitigation methodologies to promote a better working environment when dealing with solid biofuels. It has been compiled as a joint effort by experts active in Tasks 32, 36, 37 and 40 of the IEA Bioenergy Agreement, with their own specific fields of expertise. Only through this cooperation, it was possible to touch upon the full range of issues in one publication that one may come across when developing projects in which solid biomass fuels are produced, traded or used. The properties of a biomass material and the intended use determine how the material should be safely transported and stored. Self-heating, off-gassing and dust explosions are significant challenges for the industry that have already resulted in significant losses of capital investments and even tragic loss of life. Likewise, exposure to biologically active material, such as moulds and spores may form a serious hazard for the health of workers involved. With the growth of the bioenergy sector, it is important not only that opportunities for bioenergy are implemented in an efficient economic manner, but also safely.

High-doses of anti-inflammatory drugs compromise muscle strength and hypertrophic adaptations to resistance training in young adults.

- AIMS: This study tested the hypothesis that high doses of anti-inflammatory drugs would attenuate the adaptive response to resistance training compared with low doses.METHODS: Healthy men and women (aged 18-35 years) were randomly assigned to daily consumption of ibuprofen (IBU; 1200 mg; n=15) or acetylsalicylic acid (ASA; 75 mg; n=16) for 8 weeks. During this period, subjects completed supervised knee-extensor resistance training where one leg was subjected to training with maximal volitional effort in each repetition using a flywheel ergometer (FW), while the other leg performed conventional (work-matched across groups) weight-stack training (WS). Before and after training, muscle volume (MRI) and strength were assessed, and muscle biopsies were analysed for gene and protein expression of muscle growth regulators.RESULTS: The increase in m. quadriceps volume was similar between FW and WS, yet was (averaged across legs) greater in ASA (7.5%) compared with IBU (3.7%, group difference 34 cm(3) ; P=0.029). In the WS leg, muscle strength improved similarly (11-20%) across groups. In the FW leg, increases (10-23%) in muscle strength were evident in both groups yet they were generally greater (interaction effects P<0.05) for ASA compared with IBU. While our molecular analysis revealed several training effects, the only group interaction (P<0.0001) arose from a down-regulated mRNA expression of IL-6 in IBU.CONCLUSION: Maximal over-the-counter doses of ibuprofen attenuate strength and muscle hypertrophic adaptations to 8 weeks of resistance training in young adults. Thus, young individuals using resistance training to maximise muscle growth or strength should avoid excessive intake of anti-inflammatory drugs. This article is protected by copyright.
