  • Experience : An open platform for experimentation with commercial mobile broadband networks
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: MobiCom '17 Proceedings of the 23rd Annual International Conference on Mobile Computing and Networking. - New York : Association for Computing Machinery (ACM). - 9781450349161 ; , s. 70-78
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Open experimentation with operational Mobile Broadband (MBB) networks in the wild is currently a fundamental requirement of the research community in its endeavor to address the need of innovative solutions for mobile communications. Even more, there is a strong need for objective data about stability and performance of MBB (e.g., 3G/4G) networks, and for tools that rigorously and scientifically assess their status. In this paper, we introduce the MONROE measurement platform: an open access and flexible hardware-based platform for measurements and custom experimentation on operational MBB networks. The MONROE platform enables accurate, realistic and meaningful assessment of the performance and reliability of 11 MBB networks in Europe. We report on our experience designing, implementing and testing the solution we propose for the platform. We detail the challenges we overcame while building and testing the MONROE testbed and argue our design and implementation choices accordingly. We describe and exemplify the capabilities of the platform and the wide variety of experiments that external users already perform using the system

  • Measuring and Assessing Mobile Broadband Networks with MONROE
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: 2016 IEEE International Symposium on a World of Wireless, Mobile, and Multimedia Networks (WoWMoM). - Red Hook : IEEE. - 9781509021864 - 9781509021857
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Mobile broadband (MBB) networks underpin numerous vital operations of the society and are arguably becoming the most important piece of the communications infrastructure. In this demo paper, our goal is to showcase the potential of a novel multi-homed MBB platform for measuring, monitoring and assessing the performance of MBB services in an objective manner. Our platform, MONROE, is composed of hundreds of nodes scattered over four European countries and a backend system that collects the measurement results. Through a user-friendly web client, the experimenters can schedule and deploy their experiments. The platform further embeds traffic analysis tools for real-time traffic flow analysis and a powerful visualization tool.

  • Speedtest-like Measurements in 3G/4G Networks : the MONROE Experience
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: 2017 PROCEEDINGS OF THE 29TH INTERNATIONAL TELETRAFFIC CONGRESS (ITC 29), VOL 1. - : IEEE. ; , s. 169-177
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Mobile Broadband (MBB) Networks are evolving at a fast pace, with technology enhancements that promise drastic improvements in capacity, connectivity, coverage, i.e., better performance in general. But how to measure the actual performance of a MBB solution? In this paper, we present our experience in running the simplest of the performance test: "speedtest-like" measurements to estimate the download speed offered by actual 3G/4G networks. Despite their simplicity, download speed measurements in MBB networks are much more complex than in wired networks, because of additional factors (e.g., mobility of users, physical impairments, diversity in technology, operator settings, mobile terminals diversity, etc.). We exploit the MONROE open platform, with hundreds of multihomed nodes scattered in 4 different countries, and explicitly designed with the goal of providing hardware and software solutions to run large scale experiments in MBB networks. We analyze datasets collected in 4 countries, over 11 operators, from about 50 nodes, for more than 2 months. After designing the experiment and instrumenting both the clients and the servers with active and passive monitoring tools, we dig into collected data, and provide insight to highlight the complexity of running even a simple speedtest. Results show interesting facts, like the occasional presence of NAT, and of Performance Enhancing Proxies (PEP), and pinpoint the impact of different network configurations that further complicate the picture. Our results will hopefully contribute to the debate about performance assessment in MBB networks, and to the definition of much needed benchmarks for performance comparisons of 3G, 4G and soon of 5G networks.

  • P2P Live Video Streaming
  • 2010
  • Licentiatavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The ever increasing demand for video content directed the focus of researchfrom traditional server-based schemes to peer-to-peer systems for videodelivery. In such systems, video data is delivered to the users by utilizing theresources of the users themselves, leading to a potentially scalable solution.Users connect to each other, forming a p2p overlay network on top of theInternet and exchange the video segments among themselves. The performanceof a p2p system is characterized by its capability to deliver the videocontent to all peers without errors and with the smallest possible delay. Thisconstitutes a challenge since peers dynamically join and leave the overlay andalso contribute different amounts of resources to the system. The contribution of this thesis lies in two areas. The first area is theperformance evaluation of the most prominent p2p streaming architectures. We study the streaming quality in multiple-tree-based systems. We derivemodels to evaluate the stability of a multiple tree overlay in dynamic scenariosand the efficiency of the data distribution over the multiple trees. Then, westudy the data propagation in mesh-based overlays. We develop a generalframework for the evaluation of forwarding algorithms in such overlays anduse this framework to evaluate the performance of four different algorithms. The second area of the thesis is a study of streaming in heterogeneous p2poverlays. The streaming quality depends on the aggregate resources that peerscontribute to the system: low average contribution leads to low streamingquality. Therefore, maintaining high streaming quality requires mechanismsthat either prohibit non-contributing peers or encourage contribution. In thisthesis we investigate both approaches. For the former, we derive a model tocapture the evolution of available capacity in an overlay and propose simpleadmission control mechanisms to avoid capacity drainage. For the latter, inour last work, we propose a novel incentive mechanism that maximizes thestreaming quality in an overlay by encouraging highly contributing peers tooffer more of their resources.

  • Energy-Aware Weight Assignment Framework for Circuit Oriented GMPLS Networks
  • 2013
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    •  branch of green networking research is consoli- dating. It aims at routing traffic with the goal of reducing the network energy consumption. It is usually referred to as Energy- Aware Routing. Previous works in this branch only focused on pure IP networks, e.g., assuming an Open Shortest Path First (OSPF) control plane, and best effort packet forwarding on the data plane. In this work, we consider instead Generalized Multi- Protocol Label Switching (GMPLS) backbone networks, where optical technologies allow to design “circuit switching” network management policies with strict bandwidth reservation policies. We define a simple and generic framework which generates a family of routing algorithms, based on an energy-aware weight assignment. In particular, routing weights are functions of both the energy consumption and the actual load of network devices. Using such weights, a simple minimum-cost routing allows finding the current least expensive circuit, minimising the additional energy cost. Results obtained on realistic case studies show that our weight assignment policy favours a consistent reduction of the network power consumption, without significantly affecting the network performance. Furthermore, the framework allows to trade energy efficiently and network performance, a desirable property at which ISPs are looking for. Simple and robust parameter settings allow reaching a win-win situation, with excellent performance in terms of both energy efficiency and network resource utilization.

  • Measurements of multicast television over IP
  • 2007
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper, we present measurement results collected from real traces on the network FastWeb, an ISP provider that is the main broadband telecommunication company in Italy. The network relies on a fully IP architecture and delivers to the user services such as data, VoIP and IP television over a single broadband connection. Our measurements, that are based on a passive measurement technique, focus on IP TeleVision (IPTV) multicast, that consists of 83 digital TV channels encoded using different MPEG-2 encoders. The results show that, depending on the encoder and based on the bitrate, flows can be classified as being: CBR, 2-VBR (i.e., two typical bitrate values) and VBR. Measurement of the packet loss, jitter and inter-packet gap show that, independently from the class, packet generation process of the flows can have various degrees of burstiness. Despite the packet level burstiness, average jitter is limited to few milliseconds and no packet loss was ever observed, showing that the quality of IPTV offered by FastWeb is excellent.

  • Results from running an experiment as a service platform for mobile broadband networks in Europe
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Computer Communications. - : Elsevier. - 0140-3664 .- 1873-703X. ; 33, s. 89-101
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this article we present a selection from a vast range of experiments run with MONROE, our open experiment as a service (EaaS) platform for measurements and experimentation in Mobile Broadband Networks. We show that the platform can be used to benchmark network performance in a repeatable and controlled manner thanks to the collection of a rich set of geotagged metadata and the execution of discretionary user experiments. Indeed, with the sheer amount of data collected from 12 commercial mobile operators across Europe, MONROE offers an unprecedented opportunity to monitor, analyze and ultimately improve the status of current and future mobile broadband networks. Besides, we show how flexibly the platform allows combining metadata and experimental data series during the experiments or by means of post-processing, and show results produced by our own experiments as well as comment on results obtained by external research groups and developers that have been granted access to our platform.

  • Experience: Implications of Roaming in Europe
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: MobiCom '18. Proceedings of the 24th Annual International Conference on Mobile Computing and Networking. - New York, USA : ACM Publications. - 9781450359030 ; , s. 179-189
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • "Roam like Home" is the initiative of the European Commission (EC) to end the levy of extra charges when roaming within the European region. As a result, people are able to use data services more freely across Europe. However, the implications roaming solutions have on performance have not been carefully examined. This paper provides an in-depth characterization of the implications of international data roaming within Europe. We build a unique roaming measurement platform using 16 different mobile networks deployed in six countries across Europe. Using this platform, we measure different aspects of international roaming in 3G and 4G networks, including mobile network configuration, performance characteristics, and content discrimination. We find that operators adopt common approaches to implementing roaming, resulting in additional latency penalties of ∼60 ms or more, depending on geographical distance. Considering content accessibility, roaming poses additional constraints that leads to only minimal deviations when accessing content in the original country. However, geographical restrictions in the visited country make the picture more complicated and less intuitive.
