  • Tetraethylorthosilicate-containing barrier dispersion coatings-Mechanism of action
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Progress in organic coatings. - : Elsevier. - 0300-9440 .- 1873-331X. ; 139
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We demonstrate the use of tetraethylorthosilicate (TEOS) as a silica precursor for water barrier poly(styrenebutadiene) latex dispersion coating applications. The TEOS is adsorbed at the surface interface by the latex particles in the aqueous dispersion due to the hydrophobic nature of the surface and the TEOS. It then undergoes hydrolysis and condensation to the silica phase in the interstitial sites in the partially dry close-packed polymer structure. The fully cured film exhibits a greater degree of coalescence than films prepared from the unmodified latex binder. Large discrete silica particles are not formed within the cured film; rather the films contain homogenous silica dispersion with a probable particle size no larger than 10 nm. This higher degree of coalescence results in improvements in water vapour barrier performance from 121 - 20 g m(-2) d(-1), with direct water barrier performance (Cobb 120 s) improving from 25 to < 2 g m(-2), compared to the silica-free film.

  • Hydrophobic clay in starch-based coatings
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Appita journal. - 1038-6807. ; 64:2, s. 147-152
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of this work was to investigate the mechanical and barrier properties of starch-based, low-weight coatings with a non-conventional hydrophobic clay tiller commonly used in plastic industry. A commercial linerboard was coated with two different types of potato starch- based coatings; one based on a conventional oxidized starch, while the other on a hydrophobic modified starch The coated linerboards were examined using scanning electron microscopy and characterised with respect to water absorption, water vapour transmission rate, glass transition temperature, tensile stiffness and wetting by water. The results obtained indicate that hydrophobically modified clay commonly used in the plastics industry may be used as a coating additive to improve liquid water and water vapour barrier properties of paper products.

  • Latex-based barrier dispersion coating on linerboard : Flexographic multilayering versus single step conventional coating technology
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Nordic Pulp & Paper Research Journal. - : Walter de Gruyter GmbH. - 0283-2631 .- 2000-0669. ; 30:2, s. 349-359
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of this study was to investigate the possibility of using the flexographic printing process for the deposition of multilayered latex-based barrier dispersion coatings on linerboard to improve its moisture barrier properties. A coating formulation developed for a conventional coater has been tested using a flexographic printing web press. The performance of multi-layering of up to six layers was compared with a single step conventional coating process in terms of runnability and barrier performance. A commercial linerboard was used as substrate for both processes. The coated linerboard samples were examined using scanning electron microscopy and surface profiling, and were characterized with respect to their coating grammage, WVTR and water absorption (Cobb(120)) properties. The impact of waxes on water absorption was also investigated for the two coating strategies. The results show that for a similar total coating grammage ( about 6 g m(-2)), samples coated using the flexographic press showed better barrier performance and less cracks on the coated surfaces than samples coated using a conventional coating process.
